'You really wouldn't expect something like this around here': Hatfield residents spooked after discovery of body on local farmland
http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2018/03/hatfield_locals_spooked_after.html
Out walking with their dogs Sunday, numerous residents passed by the scene, talking amongst themselves about the gruesome discovery.

"You really wouldn't expect something like this around here," said a resident who lives nearby. "You just hope it wasn't something local. That scares me."

Another resident, who also preferred to go unnamed, said that she walks along the nearby trails at night all the time. "Lot of people come out here, walk their dogs, run," she said. "It's a peaceful community and a great place to walk."

Police dropped by houses around 11 p.m. to interview locals but had declined to provide details on what had occurred in the field, according to residents. Most residents learned about what the discovery was on the evening news.

It was the second time in less than a month that a dead body has been found in the town of about 3,300 residents.

In the latest case, what was first reported as a fire at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday turned out to be a burning body.
Police have not released any details about the victim.
A spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney's office says the remains have been turned over to the medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death.

The medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death, Dekoschak said.

The Hatfield Fire Department, State Police detectives unit and state fire marshal’s office responded to the call. Dekoschak said crews were on scene until early Sunday morning.
A South Street resident told the Gazette on Sunday that she was woken up Saturday night by a low-flying helicopter with a spotlight at around 11 p.m. She looked out and saw about a dozen vehicles on Bridge Lane.
Carey said the incident is under investigation by the State Police detectives unit, which is attached to the district attorney’s office, with assistance from the fire marshal’s office and Hatfield Police Department.
The discovery of the burning body and, earlier, Ringer’s remains in such a small town, with a population of roughly 3,300, is significant.
The Police Department has three full-time officers and 10 part-time officers. With the recent events, Dekoschak said, officers have been tired.
At the town’s 25-person fire department, including 23 on-call firefighters and EMTs, Fire Chief Stephen Gaughan said he could not speak specifically about Saturday’s incident. He noted, though, that the majority of the calls to the fire department are for medical emergencies that typically only need two responders.
More labor-intensive incidents — like a fire — require more people to respond to the scene. That sort of an event, and, particularly daytime calls, can be difficult because the department depends heavily on its on-call staff, and many on-call firefighters are at work during the day.

[h=1]Northwestern DA’s office: No new information released on body found burning in Hatfield[/h]
NORTHAMPTON — It’s been more than a week since a man’s body was found burning in a farm field in Hatfield, and his identity, as well as any other information surrounding the incident, remains a public mystery.

“The investigation is active and ongoing,” spokeswoman Mary Carey of the Northwestern district attorney’s office wrote in an email Wednesday. “Releasing further information at this time could jeopardize the investigation.”

Hatfield Police Chief Michael Dekoschak told 22News, it’s unusual for violent crimes to take place in this town of 3,500 people, but he said residents are safe.

State Police detectives attached to the the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office are investigating it as a murder.

Northwestern D.A. spokeswoman Mary Carey identified the victim as 44-year old Daniel Cruz of Northampton.

Cruz’ body was discovered in this remote field, at the end of Bridge Lane, just miles away from where Ringer’s body was found and not even a half a mile away from the police station.

So, why Hatfield? Chief Michael Dekoschak believes he knows why.

“You have I-91 and Route 5 and Route 10 that go through Hatfield,” said Chief Dekoschak. “Hatfield is a popular place for recreation. A lot of people know about Hatfield. They know about the Meadows area. It’s not entirely uncommon for people you don’t know to be in the area.”
