MA - Justice for Officer John O’Keefe * NO DISCUSSION * media, timelines, docs * NO DISCUSSION *

Spelling of last name of Karen Read incorrectly spelled at times.

TERRY DUNN MEURER Actually, this project came to me. I had only heard briefly about Karen Reed. The attorneys representing Karen Reed were looking for someone to follow them through the pre-trial and trial process. So I quickly did some research about the case and I was amazed at how there were two strong sides to this case. I hopped on a zoom with Karen and Alan [Jackson] and three weeks later, I was in Boston and we were filming.

MEURER That was a defense strategy. Karen, in the film, talks about how there wasn’t much buzz about this case in the traditional media. So they reached out to independent journalists, hoping they could light a fire under this. And they were very instrumental in creating the social media dialogue, vitriol, if you will. That is this case. We call them the pinks and the blues. The pro-Karen Read people wear pink. And the people that support John O’Keefe and his family and friends and the prosecution side, they wear blue.

MEURER Turtleboy is getting a lot of clicks, and he is making a lot of money off this situation — trial number one and now heading into trial number two. There’s financial and exposure gain for him, and Turtleboy isn’t the only one. A lot of the bloggers are hopping on, as it’s about money and clicks. But Turtleboy is tapping into something. All these people are following him. He’s almost like a cult leader. He tapping into something, specifically in the Karen Reed case, this idea that the system is corrupt and we’re not going to take it anymore.

Proctor's family issued a statement Thursday morning in which they argue that he has been "defamed, maligned and falsely labeled corrupt" through "unrelenting propaganda and disinformation" being shared by Read, her family, her attorneys and her supporters. They allege that Read is trying to paint herself as a victim "with the hope of tainting a jury pool."

More recently, Read's defense revealed another profane message Proctor allegedly sent in the wake of her first trial. The defense has since acknowledged that information was revealed despite the information being under seal.

"Unfortunately, we know that by speaking out, more harassment will be unleashed on our family.

Federal judge said (summary):

1. Judge Cannone was not wrong to declare a mistrial under the circumstances.
2. A private vote by jurors is not a final verdict.
3. No precedent for a federal court to force a state court to call back jurors to interview them.

Judge DID grant a "certificate of appealability," which finds that Read's team made enough of a showing of a possible constitutional violation that they can appeal this to the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

It was a completely separate issue addressed in a SEPARATE ruling. The three bullet points in tweet #1 were literally the three sections the judge wrote about in his ruling. Zero manipulation, and frankly, I’m exhausted by absurd and false allegations of bias on this app.

BREAKING: A federal judge has DENIED Karen Read’s petition for habeas corpus, in which she asked the court to call back jurors from her first trial or to refuse to allow her to be retried on charges 1 & 3. Karen Read has the right to appeal this in federal appeals court.

Proctor's wife and his sister, Courtney, said Monday that they continue to support him. They agree the messages he wrote about Read while investigating her were regrettable and unprofessional but say it did not influence his conclusion that Read killed her boyfriend, John O'Keefe.

The Proctors also say the messages don't justify the harassment that their families, including their young children, have received.

Elizabeth and Courtney Proctor said Michael Proctor wrote those messages because he was upset about the death of a fellow police officer. They said federal investigators have reviewed five years of his personal emails and text messages without finding other cases where he used such language.

"The evidence pointed to this woman killing a fellow Boston police officer. So he was angry. He was upset by that. So I understand the need that he had to vent to friends whether it was appropriate or not," Elizabeth Proctor said.

In his latest filing, Special Prosecutor Hank Brennan writes that the relationship between the defense and accident reconstruction firm ARCCA is "cozier than once portrayed."

To support his claim, Brennan adds a footnote stating that he has photographs showing Dr. Andrew Rentschler at a private luncheon where he spoke with Read's father.

Karen Read is accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, with her car in 2022. Her defense argues she is the victim of a coverup.A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read premieres tonight on ID.

In fact, the defendant's expert Dr. Rentschler testified and acknowledged that "if there is a sideswipe impact with a pedestrian and a vehicle, there is going to be very little damage to the pedestrian... so a sideswipe, by its very nature, involves minimal impact, minimal forces, minimal velocities" which contrary to the defendant's claims, advances the Commonwealth's theory of the case (Tr. 36, 174).

2 In its report ARCCA witnesses did not appear to consider Mr. O'Keefe's DNA on the defendant's Lexus broken taillight casing, taillight shards from the defendant's broken taillight found in Mr. O'Keefe's clothing, tech stream
data, and numerous statements and admissions by the defendant to various sources.

The judge has already indicated she plans to impose sanctions on the defense attorneys, but she has not said which ones nor what that punishment might be.

Judge says she will not remove the out-of-state lawyers' permission to participate in this trial. "I'm not going to tolerate false statements," the judge says. Judge says she will ALLOW ARCCA experts to testify as long as defense complies with discovery requirements
