CASE #3

A father and son walking along the woods on Fruit Street in Mansfield made a disturbing discovery on Jan. 26, 1985.

“They’re walking along, and I believe one of them saw what appeared to be a baby doll, determined to be an infant who was deceased,” Quinn said.

The newborn was partially covered by snow.

Police determined the Caucasian baby boy was born alive but died shortly after his birth.

His death was labeled a homicide, and he was buried at Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield surrounded by investigators.

Evidence recovered from the body is now being tested further to identify the baby.

CASE #3 (Baby Boy – Mansfield – 1985)

On the morning of January 26, 1985, a father and son traveled to a wooded area along Fruit Street in Mansfield. This area was approximately 6/10 of a mile south of the Mansfield Airport. They arrived at this rural location that morning to go rabbit hunting. As the father walked toward the woods, he noticed footprints in the snow that ended at a stone wall.

As he began to climb over the stone wall, he observed what, at first, he thought was a doll lying in the snow. Upon closer inspection, he realized that it was the naked body of newborn baby. The infant was partially covered by the snow and was deceased. The father and son immediately returned to their car and drove to the airport where they called the Mansfield Police.

The police responded and recovered the infant’s body which was determined to a Caucasian baby boy. The infant was later examined by the Medical Examiner who determined that the child had been born alive but had died a short time after his birth. The child was later buried at Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.

Evidence recovered from the baby’s body is being further tested to assist in identifying this infant child.

Some details.
A troubling image Martin recalls vividly.

“I remember going over a stone wall slightly in the distance and I was directed that way. There was a slight layer of snow on the ground, and I was directed to the location of the baby,” Martin said.

“It was naked laying on its back, the umbilical cord was still attached to the baby,” he said. “There was a plastic bag off to one side with some blood and some clots appear to have been torn open and the placenta, it appeared, it had been moved by an animal up by the baby’s head.”

With no evidence of who abandoned the baby, investigators zeroed in on the footprint near the body.

“I recall seeing a small footwear impression, as we refer to them,” Martin said. “It was an athletic type shoe, and you could see where it had gone in, you could see where it had come out in the vicinity of the baby.”

That sneaker print, a blue fiber, and a strand of light brown hair were the only clues left behind.

The evidence was sent to the FBI, but didn't bring them any closer to solving the case.

Martin has investigated dozens of cases throughout his career but says he’ll never be able to forget this one.

“No doubt about it, I think about it every so often," Martin says.
