Massachusetts police seek public's help finding missing Appalachian Trail thru-hiker Mark Langston Jr. of Texas

Mark Langston Jr. is hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine and was last heard from on 6/12 at the Mt. Greylock Summit. He has missed all family check-ins since 6/12 and his phone is off. If you have contact with him, please have him contact his family.

Oh no.

At least the weather has been pretty favorable in that area since the 12th - dry, mostly lows in the 50s, highs in the 70s.

There's an update (Facebook?) from the Williamstown Police Department at the end of that first link stating:

UPDATE: WE HAVE MADE CONTACT WITH MARK NEAR RUTLAND, VT AND ALL IS OK. HE HAS MADE CONTACT WITH HIS FAMILY. THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE SHARES AS IT WAS A HIKER ON THE TRAIL THAT BROUGHT THE SITUATION TO MARK'S ATTENTION.

This sort of thing scares me because my 65 y/o husband is getting ready to start the AT in late August, from Maine heading south. He's been a hiker, backpacker, camper for years and he's well prepared but I worry about a situation just like this! Thanks for bringing this to our attention, cybervampira!

That’s great news!

Glad Mark is safe! Cell service is probably spotty, at best, throughout most of the AT in the northeast. The cell service in rural areas (even somewhat rural) is horrible in this area. I would imagine the hilly terrain is most likely a significant factor in that.
