Good morning from the center of the criminal trial universe for the first full day of jury deliberations in the Commonwealth vs. Karen Read

-The jury is expected to briefly enter the courtroom to start the day and then get back to decision making

-Yesterday, Judge Cannone told the jury to not immediately conduct a straw vote before carefully reviewing what they heard/saw

-The media chairs have been removed from the courtroom for space.

-The defense team and both prosecutors are in the courtroom and everyone else should be arriving soon.

If it comes in today... not guilty verdict. I truly believe the state did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt, so imo that's the only proper verdict.

However, I am worried there may be a hung jury.

There is not going to be a hung jury. I assure you, the judge is not going to allow hung jury after how long this trial has been. She will keep them deliberating for millenia, if necessary.

Assistant District Attorneys Adam Lally and Laura McLauglin arrives. Lally is carrying a pile of documents and begins reviewing them. Read and her attorneys are sitting at the defense table with nothing in front of them.

The jury enters. So does the judge.

The two alternates are also here. One of the alternates wipes her eyes and appears to be crying.

The judge sends the jury back to the deliberation room. She tells the attorneys to stay in the courthouse until 10am and to be back by 330pm. She says they need to be ready to be in their seats within 5 minutes.

The courtroom is emptying.

I'm here at Norfolk Superior Court. It's the first day of full deliberations for the jury in the #KarenReadTrial. Jury is brought in, asked if they've seen/read anything about case. One juror -- who is an alternate -- appears to be crying.

Lawyers have to stay in the building until 10 AM, be back at 3:30 PM, and be only 5 mins or less away at all times today, Judge Cannone says. That way if she calls them back, they can be back as quickly as possible.

Jury is now off deliberating.

What is Laura McLaughlin even doing here? It seems like Lally has monopolized the whole trial. It may have served the prosecution better to have more than 1 voice.

She is an ADA, and I've wondered too why she wasn't given a turn in presenting. moo

The lawyers are back in the courtroom. So is the Read family. Here comes the O'Keefe family. The court clerk tells me there's a question from the jury.

The judge re-enters the chamber. Judge says the jury wants to conclude today's deliberations and board the bus by 4pm because one of them has "a long-standing obligation."

The lawyers do not object. The judge writes a note to the jury that is ok. She leaves the courtroom. Alan Jackson and the court clerk, Jim McDermott, seem to be having a disagreement about whether something was "on the record." Sounds as if the judge will be coming back.

Judge just announced that jury wants to complete their deliberations by 4pm today because one of the jurors has a commitment. Both sides say fine. They will work until 4pm today and if no verdict by then return tomorrow.

Sounds like they are not even close if they plan to still be deliberating at 4pm
