MA Proposes Weighing, Measuring Students

  • #21
I remember being weighed and measured by the nurse. Why did they stop doing that?

Before schools start this new program, they need to get rid of the machines stuffed full of junk food and sugary pop. You can't dangle a donut in front of a kid's face every day, then tell him he's fat and needs to exercise.

They did away with all sugary foods allowed at school, such as you can no longer send cup cakes for their Birthdays. Oh, but it's quiet ok for them to be able to buy it out of their machines. I know children are not getting fat eating School lunches at our school. They give very small portions. My son, use to buy 3 lunches every day at school. When he graduated he was 6' and 145 pounds...no where close to being fat.

At the school where I teach they tell us no food or drink in the classroom, then they put snack and soda machines at the end of every hall! And the snacks are the worst kind of junk -- chips, candy, and cookies. Nothing healthy, even if kids wanted to buy it. Not even crackers or pretzels!

Weight is a huge problem here (no pun intended), but, like poco said, you don't need a nurse's screening to see a fat kid.

I'm on the fence with all of this. I disagree with weighing them, because like many here said-we know a fat kid when we see one. But, what's the harm in it? Maybe the parents know their kids are fat and could care less, but if the kid doesn't realize it until he/she is weighed in school maybe that weigh in will inspire them to seek healthier foods and a more active lifestyle.
My sons elementary school has the sugar ban (no foods that list sugar as the 1st ingredient) and they offer choices at lunch. You can have whatever slop they are serving, or a chef salad for lunch. Thankfully my son has always loved raw veggies and usually opts for the chef salad. He absolutely does not like cooked veggies (not even french fries, if you can call them cooked veggies) and will opt for a salad if given the choice.
