''According to court documents, there are messages on that phone from a scammer claiming to be a soap opera star who wanted to hook up with her. One message from the person said, "you have to get rid of your husband honey -- I need you so much."

"It was a scam," Doucette told WBZ.
But court documents say she eventually wrote back, "making an amazing soup. Special potion. Maybe I could collect life insurance."

''TOWNSEND, Mass. (WBZ) - Authorities say a Massachusetts woman was tricked into poisoning her husband by a scammer posing as a soap opera star, but she claims it’s all one big misunderstanding.

Roxanne Doucette is under investigation for allegedly feeding her husband, 73-year-old Paul Doucette, poisoned soup in early December. She denies the allegations, claiming the soup was simply old.

“I didn’t poison him,” Roxanne Doucette said. “I’ve never, ever tried to poison him in any way whatsoever. I love him very, very much. And I would never try to kill anyone.”

Hours after Paul Doucette ate the soup, his wife called 911, and he was rushed to the hospital, barely conscious. That’s where the couple was met by their daughter, who was suspicious and began to examine her mother’s phone''.

So, how was she scammed?

Sounds like her thoughts went right to the insurance money, doesn’t it??
It sounds like a romance scam. I am in my 30s and I get multiple romance scam friend requests on FB every week. I literally just deleted one a couple hours ago. They were probably demanding money from her and she suggested the insurance.

The woman does admit she was contacted by someone claiming to be a soap opera star who sent messages saying they loved her and wanted her to leave her husband.

I want to know why their daughter was immediately suspicious and wanted to check the wife's phone. Strange things happen all the time and they're just coincidences, so im not saying I don't believe her when she says she didn't poison him, but something was probably going on in the background of all this otherwise why would the daughter be suspicious right away?

yep clearly either knows more or there have been prior incidents IMO

Yes, that's a really good point. And also was that her daughter also or just his daughter from a previous marriage?

The first article linked up thread says that the initial toxicology tests came back negative, so what made him almost unconscious? Or was it perhaps something that they didn't immediately test for? I guess it depends on what she told them about his illness.

It will be interesting to see where this ends up.

''Townsend police officers were called to Nashoba Valley Medical Center after Doucette’s daughter told authorities she suspected her mother had poisoned her father after she found disturbing messages. Detectives later learned Doucette was messaging a person she thought was Thorsten Kaye of “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

''Doucette denied poisoning her husband but said she believed she was a victim of a scammer. She lost $8,000, she allegedly told detectives. Her husband may have had a stroke, she claimed, authorities said.

Doctors reportedly tested Doucette’s husband for opioids, cocaine and alcohol, but not for anything else. It’s not clear if further tests were completed''

Not to excuse her actions in any sense, but it’s kind of sad, if she had some inner loneliness that was preyed on. And was desperate and gullible enough to fall for it.

Doucette said that she thought she was talking to a star, “and that she had always wanted to meet a star,” court documents said. She told NBC Boston that she ended up wiring about $4,000 to the scammer.

Thank you for highlighting this! I was wondering about that.

It's possible that this was all an unfortunate coincidence, as far as her husband getting ill, and that obviously, she did say those things to the "soap opera star" she thought she was talking to, but that she was playing along for attention and hopes of a meeting.

For me, key questions to answer:
1. Have they ascertained the cause of his illness?
2. How much time elapsed between these messages, the alleged consumption of soup, and then the subsequent illness?
3. How seriously are the police investigating this? Seriously it seems, since she is charged with attempted murder.

ETA: after posting this, I went back and read the article much more carefully and I am leaning a little more towards this not being a coincidence. The husband did say the soup tasted bitter and he got sick very soon after. She is charged with attempted murder so I presume LE has more evidence than just text messages to a scammer.

The reports differ considerably.

Hubby was poisoned but they didn’t test for poisons, just drugs/alcohol.

Hubby was unresponsive, has cardiac history.

Wife fought off police when they tried to take her phone & iPad.

Even kicked one in the groin with her boot.

Wife sent money to fake ‘star’.

If you were well, why would you think a ‘star’ wants you or your money?

Daughter may be aware of the thousands sent to the scammer/that mother thinks ‘star’ wants to be with her. Ergo suspicion. JMO

This says that she’s only been charged with resisting arrest and beating a police officer; nothing in connection with the poisoning:

She was arrested by Ayer police for intimidating a police officer, resisting arrest, and assaulting and beating a police officer.

However, she has not been charged in connection with the poisoning allegation.

……Police are working with the Middlesex County District Attorney's office to determine if they’ll bring any more charges against her.

Huh. The article that @dotr linked from Law & Crime says:

"Roxanne Doucette is charged with attempted murder, intimidation of a witness, juror, police or court official, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer, court documents obtained by media outlets say."

I wonder which is correct? The NBC article is more recent so maybe that one?

Yes, it’s very strange, because since I read this NBC one stating there were no charges yet connected with the poisoning and police were still deciding, I assumed it might all just fade away.

Yet if as @JDG says a number of sources state she’s been charged already with attempted murder, can they all have jumped the gun?

*All the sources that say she was charged are from 2 days ago.

*The NBC I posted is the most recent, updated late yesterday.

A Townsend police incident report said Roxanne Doucette, 64, is being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder using poison. The report listed Doucette’s husband as the alleged victim and her 40-year-old daughter as a witness.

***Investigated is not the same as charged. I believe the NBC latest has it correct, and all the other sources made the error of taking information from one erroneous source.***

So in summary, this is how I view it :

1. She’s been arrested and charged with resisting arrest, intimidation of a police officer, and assaulting a police officer. [3 charges]

2. There have been no charges in connection with the alleged poisoning.

3. The Middlesex County DA is investigating along with police to determine if there will be any further charges, based on evidence.

Withholding judgement on this one for now until the toxicology. She certainly is the victim of a scam, yet to be seen if she is a murderess.

While some reports imply those messages were in the same conversation, they may not be.

In some reports these messages seem far less incriminating.

According to police documents, a message from "Thorsten" on Dec. 1 stated: "You have to get rid of your husband honey. I need you so much," to which Roxanne Doucette replied she needed to do some thinking.

Later that day, at 2:34 p.m., police documents say Roxanne Doucette responded, "Making an amazing soup. Special potion. He will be hungry when he gets back. Just enough for him."

At 4:26 p.m., Roxanne Doucette says, "Hubby got back not feeling well. Maybe I can collect life insurance," according to police documents.
