MA - Ryan Hazel, 14, Mauled to Death by 4 Dogs he was Dogsitting. 9 May 2019

Unfortunately, and in my opinion only, if one dog showed aggressive dominance, and the child was frightened ( displaying unintentional weakness), the other "pack members" would follow the aggressive dog's lead.
That is possible. Dogs sense fear, and will attack if you show fear. When I was about 10 years old, a german shepherd attacked me for absolutely no reason other than I showed fear. The nextdoor neighbor of the owners of that dog killed that dog with a shotgun a few months later.

Shepherds and Malinos could be dangerous/aggressive dogs. Not a good job for a young teenager to be taking care of so many potentially dangerous dogs. I wonder if owner should face charges?

He might have been partially at fault by roughhousing with the dogs.

There is no mention in the articles I read that he was roughousing with the dogs. Do you have a link that says that he was? As far as we know, this young man has no fault in his death. I am not sure it is fair or appropriate to hint at/speculate on/ascribe any blame to him given the facts that we know.

I wonder what the history of the dogs were. Had they been trained for work? The article below gives a good sense of the protectiveness of these breeds. I think the trainer's perspective on maintaining control of the dogs is very interesting.

I am so sorry for this family and Ryan. This is an absolute terrifying and horrible way to die.

Dog trainer: 'These dogs, they live to protect.'

Young kids and teens should never be left alone to care for a pack of dogs, according to expert K-9 trainer Chris Park, who said Dutch shepherds and Belgian malinois are extremely protective............

Park, who has a private dog training business based in Andover and owns a retired Belgian malinois police dog, said that the breeds are intelligent and highly trainable but protective.

“Most of the dogs attack because they want to defend themselves and because they don’t know how to react,” said Park. He said the dogs should never be left in the care of an untrained handler, especially a child.

“If the dog is trained to be a protection dog, he will not bite without reason,” said Park. “These dogs, they live to protect.”

Park dedicated 13 years to K-9 police work and said to avoid any danger of attack, handlers should maintain control of the animals and keep the dogs in a kennel if they will be around new and unfamiliar people.

Same thing with me and a Doberman Pinscher when I was about 10 y/o.
I was riding my bike to a friend's house, and he came roaring at me from the backyard of his owner's house as I was riding down the road. I freaked and rode into the yard of the neighbor's house across the street, dropped my bike, and she let me in, knowing who I was, and knowing the dog. No bites, but he did have his teeth in one leg of my blue jeans. I've been afraid of the breed ever since -- I know, not fair, but...

I understand dogs are very popular in our society atm but not everyone is comfortable with dogs.I have been very afraid of then since I was a child. My beef is with dog owners who feel it is their dogs right to run free unleashed over my right to walk outside. It is a constant complaint of mine to my HOA because I have been jumped on by loose dogs several times and caused me trauma.I am a small person and dogs tend to go after the weak and small.Reading about dog attacks and owners not leashing has me carrying my concealed weapon just to take out trash and go to mailbox or get in car.I have more of a fear of getting attacked by a dog than getting mugged.

Yes. It's him.

Fatal dog attack appears to be 'terrible tragedy,' DA says

So how many people with the name Scott Dunmore live in the Boston area? See this website:

This would make it even more bizarre if a professional dog trainer had these mis-behaved dogs. Can someone sleuth this to verify one way or the other?

Yes, they'll remain victims of this horrible tragedy the rest of their lives. My heart and prayers are with them.

I don't know if I would be calling it a tragedy if I were a DA. Tragedy implies no one is at fault. Here we have an adult male, with multiple large breed dogs, hiring a young teenager to take care of these dogs, and that teenager is killed when the owner wasn't even there to supervise the teenager or the dogs.
If he bought 14 year old alcohol he could be facing charges. But he left 14 year old in charge of multiple large breed dogs, 14 year old is killed, and it's just an accident?

I have a friend mauled by an Akita as a teen while working at a kennel. He believes the only reason he's alive is he played dead while that dog continued to maul his arm and until he left him alone. It sickens me to read of others suggesting the boy might be at fault. I don't believe for one instant that kid did anything to encourage or justify the dogs attacking him.

What kind of trainer would hire a young teen to take care of a large pack of large dogs anyway?? The only reason I can think of is to save money. He put that child in danger and should have known better. I honestly can not think of any good reason to hire an inexperienced child to take care of 7 large dogs except it's loads cheaper than hiring a professional dog sitter or having them kenneled somewhere else.

I absolutely agree! As a professional he has absolutely no excuse for not knowing better.

I'm fine with dogs but loud ones hurt my ears. I "met" a loud barker in my building lobby the other day and, not knowing anything about the dog except that its elderly owner thought wimpy mild grumbling was the way to cure them ("now, now, no barking...", like permissive parents who let their toddlers roughhouse around furniture in a waiting room and then say "YOU could get hurt if you tip that lamp over, sweetie..." I'm all, what about me?? I bruise too...") . Well, anyway, the rule of my building complex is that dog owners are supposed to stand aside, and not willy nilly jump upon the elevators with other people unless invited to do so. I was anxious not to have my ears assaulted again, so pressed the "door close" to try and get away from them.

Well, it didn't work, as she made a dash for it. Ms. No Barky-Barky then spent the entire time in the mutual elevator ride, complaining passive-aggressively to the dog about meanie-mean witches who just let elevator doors slam on people's arms without a care in the world. Me, thinking: "Um, isn't the default *supposed* to be that you let me ride alone?"

As I plan on living here long term, I kept my mouth shut, but you can be sure if I'm ever in a situation with the selfsame dog-owner, I'm pointedly staring at Yappy as I say with exquisite politeness, "No, please, YOU go ahead. I'll take the next one."

Topic: I really think it depends upon the pet owner. I have friends who've put me in charge of taking care of pets who needed to be medicated, and it was a nightmare. I was lucky to get a pill per day down the throat of one's cat, and was lucky I didn't run out of rooms as any room in which I dosed her, she then started avoiding me as if I'd lit her tail on fire. Conversely, I have another friend who said "If my cat was taking medicine and we couldn't get [our skilled friend who works at an animal care center, and who is familiar with administering meds] to pet sit, I'd board the cat or stay home."

There is always a Wrongful Death suit by his family.
Some info:

MASSACHUSETTS WRONGFUL DEATH LAW

A. What Is “Wrongful Death”?

“Wrongful death” is a legal term for a civil action to recover damages for the death of family member that was caused by some misconduct of another person or corporation. The departed is referred to as the decedent. The decedent’s legal interests are represented by either an executor or an administrator. An executor is a person identified and selected by the decedent in his or her will. An administrator is a court appointed personal representative when the will is silent on the issue or if there is no will. Either way, the personal representative is the authorized person in charge of the decedent’s estate.
[...]
Thus, the statute allows recovery for death resulting from negligence, breach of warranty and reckless or intentional conduct. Proof of more aggravated wrongdoing than simple negligence triggers the possibility of punitive damages against the defendant.

Sad all the way around.

He was familiar with the dogs.
I think it’ll never be known what set them off this time.
IMO, it could have been a scent that was diffferent, exciting one dog & things quickly escalated.
Just horrific.
I’m so glad Gma could not get out of the car, I think things might have been much worse considering her mobility issues.

I bet some of these dogs are 'clients', or misbehaving dogs that he was supposed to be training.

The four dogs that mauled him were running free. There were 7 dogs in crates/kennel, which I would assume are the dogs that he is training. This young man and his family had been doing this service for this man for over a year. This is an awful tragedy, I agree with the DA. I am not sure it is a crime or a great lawsuit. I would think that there could be a business insurance settlement though if the family wanted to go this way.

"Dunmore was involved in training the dogs but Quinn said the animals were not licensed by the town. Hazel and his family had an arrangement with Dunmore to care for the animals and the boy had done so for about a year, according to Quinn."
