Susan Willand, 54, was last seen on Dec. 20 around 8 a.m. on Kennedy Drive in North Chelmsford. She’s 5-foot-7, approximately 125 pounds and has blonde hair.

She might be wearing a dark blue or black winter coat with a hood, police said, and she might appear confused or disoriented.

Rooting for you Susan.

Susan appears to live in an apartment complex on Kennedy Drive. There are train tracks and the Merrimack River (upper right in image) behind the apartments.

On Monday morning, Chelmsford Deputy Police Chief Dan Ahern said that local police and members of other agencies will search in the area of the Williamsburg Condominium neighborhood on Wellman Ave. Officials didn’t explain why the search is centered there.

The Williamsburg Condos are about a mile from her apartment (yellow on map).

The police are most likely restating something they were told. This may or may not be how she appeared. Would like to know who reported this.

Police Search Chelmsford Neighborhood For Missing Woman Susan Willand

She was last seen on Kennedy Drive in North Chelmsford. Chelmsford police said Monday that the latest search is focused on the Williamsburg Condominium neighborhood on Wellman Avenue.

A large gathering of law enforcement could be seen in the area around noon Monday.

“Do not be alarmed at the police presence in the area,” the department told residents in a Facebook post.

If police believed a person went missing while intoxicated, I wonder would they say "may appear intoxicated" or would they say "may appear disoriented or confused." Though, intoxication wears off and this seems to be worded as if this is something that the public should continue to watch for?

Friend in the area indicates there's quite a lot more to it than what's been made public. I hope she's okay and found shelter somewhere last night. It hasn't been ridiculously cold in the region but it's not warm either.

It was 8AM when was she was "last seen" and may have "appeared disoriented and confused". I read it originally as possibly a mental issue, rather than intoxication based on the time of day. Disoriented and confused is a leading phrase that promotes the increased chance of accident or self-harm.

But then reminded myself that I have learned to be wary of accounts from the last person(s) to see a missing person. The accounts are sometimes wrong, and intentionally in some cases. Not saying that happened here, but I take the description of Susan with a grain of salt.

No doubt. This is just hearsay and we may hear differently from LE in an update but neighbors are saying that a neighbor is the one who last saw her walking. This would have been the 8 am sighting I suppose.

Maybe she has to take medication regularly, and if not could become "disoriented and confused"? Diabetes for example? Or epilepsy? Jmo.

I am local to this case and drove around the area this morning.

Map attached. A- Adam's Farm condos, W-Williamsburg condos, S- Southwell Field,

1) Kennedy Drive (Adam's Farm Condominiums) where Susan lives. No police presence. Only saw one missing persons flyer, just on her residence.

2) Wellman Ave (Williamsbug Condominiums), sprawling complex on the Merrimack River where heavy LE presence was seen on Monday during a day of searching. No police presence today, and no flyers observed. We don't know Susan's connection to Williamsburg, but obviously there is one.

It is one mile from Adam's Farm to Williamsburg. Three ways to get there on foot, by the busy main road which doesn't have sidewalk the entire way, on the RR tracks that run by both places, or by paths going by the Southwell baseball fields near the river, these paths lead to Williamsburg and is the shortest route by foot.

I also drove down the windy road to the Southwell field boat ramp, which is close to Susan's condo and in between the two condo's. The boat ramp road was unplowed and had an inch or two of tire packed snow. It hasn't snowed since Susan's disappearance. Two sets of tire tracks were backed up to the boat ramp near the water, one small set directly up to the water, and one much larger set about ten feet back. The Merrimack River has a perimeter of thin crusty ice, such that you can't just walk into the water. At the end of the boat ramp, the ice was broken and refrozen out to a distance of 15 feet, then it wasn't broken, as if someone had broken the ice and walked into the water, maybe up to their waist or more (image attached). I doubt it was caused by any type of boat launch. Just an observation and not making anything of it, I'm sure LE was in the area during their search, and it might well have been LE that went into the water.

Susan was reportedly last seen by a neighbor on the morning on December 20th, possibly "confused"- although we don't know who said this. This description leads us down the path to think she went missing that morning, while she was on this walk.

We shouldn't assume that.

She could have returned home and disappeared hours later. When was she reported missing and by whom?

After trying to find out more about Susan and her life, I would hazard the guess that her family was the source behind telling the police that she may have appeared disoriented or confused, and furthermore I believe this was their best guess based on the events of the past couple of weeks, not necessarily an eyewitness account of how she appeared that morning. The family was very concerned about her within mere hours. I hope that somehow she is okay and that the family can get answers.

Thanks for such a detailed post. I didn't realize the river was so close. There is not much in the news for this case.

This article was posted yesterday and the police describe why they are focusing their search on the river/river's edge in that particular area. They must have camera footage that tracked her directly to this spot. IMO this is a recovery mission now and it's so sad.
