A Possible Theory: Was Madeleine McCann Taken by a Resort Staff Member?
I have been thinking about an angle that hasn't been explored as much in the Madeleine McCann case, the possibility that a staff member at the Ocean Club resort may have been responsible for her disappearance.
We know that Madeleine’s parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, were dining at the nearby tapas restaurant on the night of May 3, 2007, and that they and their friends followed a routine of checking on their children at intervals. This means that anyone working at the resort who was within earshot, whether at the restaurant, reception, or another area, could have overheard them discussing their plan and realised the children were left alone in the apartment.
Here is why I think a resort employee could be a strong suspect:

This means that anyone working at the resort who was within earshot, whether at the restaurant, reception, or another area, could have overheard them discussing their plan and realised the children were left alone in the apartment.
Here is why I think a resort employee could be a strong suspect:
- Access to Information – Staff members, especially those in housekeeping, maintenance, or even at the restaurant, could have overheard conversations or noticed the pattern of the parents dining while leaving the children unattended.
- Access to a Key – Some staff members likely had master keys or could have obtained access to the McCanns’ apartment without forcing entry. If someone wanted to take advantage of this situation, they could have entered quietly without drawing attention.
- Familiarity with the Resort Layout – An employee would know the resort’s routines, security measures, and potential escape routes. They would also be able to blend in without raising suspicion.
- Motive – Opportunity for Trafficking or a More Personal Crime – While some have speculated that Madeleine was taken by an organised trafficking ring, it’s also possible that this was a more opportunistic crime. A staff member who saw an opportunity, whether to take Madeleine themselves or hand her over to someone else, may have acted that night.
- Lack of Forced Entry – The official reports indicate no clear signs of a break-in, supporting the theory that someone used a key or entered in a non-obvious way.
- Were all staff members properly vetted and investigated?
- Were any employees working that night acting suspiciously?
- Did police thoroughly check key access records?
