Watch from the 1 hour mark. CB's letter to MWT. He says he comes out of prison in Dec 2006 "and from that point on, he does not return back to Praia da Luz"

Yes, the phone does not necessarily identify the user. But if the Prosecutors can prove he was the user of the phone prior to this - which it appears they can - the court doesn't just give the benefit of the doubt to the defendant.

Phone evidence plays a major part in court cases nowadays and it is generally accepted that the phone is assumed to be with the owner unless they can provide a plausible explanation.
Nf probably has confirmed it was his number

I don't know whose landline the number is/was, only that the STD code is allocated to an area in Augsburg.
During the MWT documentary recently screened on Paramount Plus, MWT spoke to AB on Skype/Zoom. AB said that CB had mailed him the Jag documents two weeks prior as he (CB) could no longer register the car in Munich. AB said that CB told him he was looking for a job and apartment in Germany. If that is true, then Madeleine McCann herself wasn't even on his radar when the re-registration was planned. This may be a coincidence as we know CB did return to Germany within days of Madeleine's disappearance but he certainly didn't stay there permanently during the remainder of 2007.
I remember that interview from the MWT documentary, I personally think AB was trying to distance himself from CB and the case . As in June 2021 he told JC a very different story page 226 including “ When I look back now I realise he had to do something fast . Could it have been Madeleine ? When you are convicted of raping an old woman and molesting young girls you begin to wonder “

That’s interesting. I think the reregistering of the Jag has been used as part of the story to imply guilt. If what you’re saying is correct then IMO, it’s more likely to show innocence…
I'd love to know what exactly happened. Did CB applied for his car to be reregistered the day after Maddie vanished, or was the reregistration granted that day? Because if the karter that means CB had to apply for the reregistration days, if not weeks before. It's not like you just pop into the registration office and they reregister your car on the spot, you need to apply, fill a metric ton of papers, make payments and then wait. And the Portuguese breaucracy isn't exactly known of being fast.

Just to say this extract is slighlty misleading from reuters. CB had not "registered" a place of "residence" in Saxony-Anhalt. This is what the point of contention was in the recent judgement.

He was the registered "land owner" of the property (and had been since 2009ish while registered living elsewhere) but it was not officially registered as a place of residence. And nor could it be because it can't qualify as a residential address. His last official registered address was Braunschweig.
But a lower court decided this wasn't so, the objection from FF wasn't handled just because he handed in the objection, there must have been just cause at this time to annul proceedings.

The court gave their opinion that CB was "living" there as he claimed, not that it was a legally registered place of residence. But it is just that court's opinion, the proof is far from conclusive, and the prosecutors clearly have a different opinion and look set to appeal.

If you read the judgment up thread, the court justified the forming of that judgement based on 4 main things-

CB owned the property
Some of his vehicles were there
Some of his belongings were there
He still owns the property

The first point is somewhat irrelevant, he owned it since around 2009 but was not living there for that entire period. The fact his vehicles were there also isn't proof he lived there. He fixes up cars and it would be the logical place to store them given its size, regardless of where he was living. His belongings being there is probably the strongest evidence he was staying there at least some of the time, but it appears he had belongings elsewhere too so again it doesn't prove he was living there all the time. As to the fact he still owns the property, I think the court see this as relevant in that he could (if released) return to living there. I.e it is seen as a long term residence and distinguished from the other stopping points where he stayed, including wherever he was during the two months after he left there but before he fled to Portugal (which was probably in Braunschweig).

It will be interesting to see what exactly the appeal will be based on.

July wasn't it, 13 yrs after the event a small child, how preserved would any remains likely to be. But like you say no breakthrough .
In Portugal where it is customary for bodies to be re-interred after a time, there have been odd circumstances causing distress for many families “Dead bodies are randomly mummifying in Portugal, baffling scientists and sparking a crisis in its graveyards” Dead bodies are randomly mummifying in Portugal, baffling scientists and sparking a crisis in its graveyards

What a very peculiar and disconcerting investigation this is. So much to say and so abysmally little to show after 3 years, along with breaching all known accepted and legal investigative standards.

I expect it will quietly throw in the towel at some point, HCW will lick his wounds, and this MM case will remain an unresolved one.

It's been a mess so far, hasn't it?

My mother language is Spanish. So my understanding of English has to be limited, and my understanding of English translated from German yet more limited. So, please, let me know where in the attached BKA document is said that the Jaguar was registered on May 4, 2007?

Or for those who understand German (that is not my case):

"Die letzte bekannte Zulassung nach dem Tattag war bei der Stadt Augsburg."

I understand that the last know registration which was "after the day of the crime" (not "the day after the crime") may be any date after the crime, but not necessarily the following day.

Am I right?

Yes. After the day of the crime

I don’t think that turning up new evidence while investigating a cold case and finding a new prime suspect as a result would have been an easy achievement.

In my opinion the German authorities have carried out sterling work on behalf of defending the rights of the child who in this case is MM and are to be congratulated, not berated for doing so.

That in the process the rights of CB are also being respected is I think, shown by the fact that the court has acted on his behalf in respect of residency and no other complaint of infringement has been made, as far as I know.

I don't think HCW has any wounds to lick because I think the saga hasn't yet reached its conclusion.

It doesn't state the exact date in that document, Heri, but Jon Clarke did obtain HCW's confirmation that the re-registration was dated 4th May 2007. Here's the exert from his book..

So from that I would say it is safe to conclude that there is no ambiguity about the date of the registration change. The only puzzle is why and is it of relevance to the disappearance or just a bizarre coincidence.

The change of owner may have been an attempt to construct a remote alibi. We were told that the Jag itself remained in Portugal. It would be interesting to know where it was kept while CB was trundling around in the Westfalia after Madeleine's disappearance, as I've not read anything about him subsequently driving it "for the ladies".

If it’s relevant to the disappearance, then IMO, it suggests CB probably used it in the abduction and then panicked afterwards so he reregistered it.

This seems ridiculous. If you were abducting a child, why would you use such a conspicuous car - why not use a small Seat or white van, even the VW T3 would be a far more common vehicle in the Algaeve.

CB seems to have been a prolific burglar. There are reports of him having lots of stolen passports and he was nicknamed ‘the climber” by his petty criminal friends. He has no convictions for burglaries so he must have been good at planning and executing them.

Why would the same guy commit his biggest crime in a Jag with German plates?

Egh. If the registration was officially changed on May 4rd, then it is just a coincidence, because CB had to apply for that days, if not weeks, earlier.

You cannot reregistrate a car in one day. It's a lengthy process that requires filling forms, providing documentation and waiting for an official decision. So if the car in question was reregistered officially on May 4th, that proces exactly nothing. The only damning thing could be if CB applied for registration on this day.

Many thanks @misty48 ... Do you have a video of HCW saying this?
