Unless they have got something very specific in mind to search, a two day limit just doesn't really make any sense. No serious search of the area could take place in that limited amount of time, even if just searching the immediate banks.
A sonar scan could possibly pick up a box or case.

They might also have someone in prison observing his reaction.

Or at some point, they will seize the novel he’s writing as evidence.

I am very skeptic they will find anything of value for the case. :(

In Portuguese TV someone said it is the result of an ILOR. That may explain why they will do the searches now, and not in a better month with less than 25% of filled capacity of the barragem (now it is at 56%).

Barragem of Arade

The deep of water in April was 49,6 meters and growing. Could they empty the Barragem to some lesser point?

But the bottom is not at 49,66 meters. I am searching for more data in Portuguese.

Is it possible that the tip off came from the same lawyer who had instigated the searches years ago?

The below from OP

German police sources told the Olive Press the search was called ‘over a month ago’ after a ‘very credible’ new tip came in to prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters, in Braunschweig.

“The tip came in really recently and prosecutor Wolters believed it because the source also provided evidence,” he said.

Wolters himself told the Olive Press this afternoon, that he ‘couldn’t officially confirm anything’, but promised he would issue a press release tomorrow morning.

The tip comes via a lawyer, Marcos Teixeira da Fonte Aragao Correia, whose client is an underworld figure, who ‘knew exactly what happened to Maddie’.

The lawyer, based on the Algarve, had previously named the spot and privately funded a search there in 2008.

Some more info from the Mirror:

Officers from Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria are expected to carry out the physical search, which is due to last two days.

Divers will explore the murky depths of the reservoir, which is near the town of Silves.

Teams will also comb scrubland next to the water.

It is the first overseas-led search since British police dug for clues on wasteland in Praia da Luz in the Algarve in 2014.

Brueckner was living in a ramshackle farmhouse close to the resort shortly before Madeleine vanished.

His friend Michael Tatschl claimed in 2020 that Brueckner often visited a reservoir half an hour inland from Praia da Luz. He added that Brueckner “spent a lot of time there” with fellow German drifter Christian Post.

Mr Post denied any knowledge of the reservoir when the Mirror tracked him down in Cambodia last year.

But he said he was “100% certain” Brueckner, who made a living burgling holiday apartments, snatched Madeleine.

...

An onlooker said: “There are around two dozen Policia Judiciaria officers who seem to be supervising things at this stage.”

German officers arrived at the reservoir last night.

They were travelling in three Volkswagen vans and a Ford Ranger with a Portuguese police escort in front.

It was not known last night if the search is based on new evidence or has been planned for months.

One well-placed source said the operation is linked to information the authorities had gleaned, pointing to trips Brueckner made to the dam.

The insider added: “Portuguese police will offer logistical support but the initiative is German. Scotland Yard officers are due to travel to Portugal but theirs will be a watching brief.”

German prosecutors said they will release further information about the search this morning.

Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria said: “[We] confirm that, regarding the investigation of an English child... steps are still being taken to fully clarify the situation.

“In the next few days in the Algarve region, new searches will be carried out, co-ordinated by [us] at the request of the German authorities and with the presence of British authorities.”

Busy week for the continent's "well-placed sources". I hope they all manage to grab a bit of sleep.

If nothing really relevant is captured (probably as expected), are they coming prepared to use even the weakest piece they can catch and "polish" it to add to the puzzle?! (as in the others...an hair, half a fingerprint...)

I have a question, was any evidence ever found that MM was in the CB trailer? I read that on a page in Spanish but in the other Portuguese and British they do not affirm such a thing

Madeleine McCann detectives launch major search for missing toddler at Portuguese reservoir that suspect Christian Brueckner called his 'little paradise'

  • Police have started searching the Barragem do Arade reservoir in Portugal
  • It will be the first major operation of its kind since a dig in Praia da Luz in 2014
  • British police will also be present while the search operation is carried out

The wider the area, the lower the intelligence.

Maybe they are not searching for a body, but CB belongings.

I presume the water is held in there for future use, so emptying it might not be a practical option

Looks like a big search with lots of resources devoted to it, so i would have thought they must be able to make some kind of decent case for searching there, if not specific intel.

The media story i expect is just that - to justify the expense, but doesn't seem like it would be reason enough on a general basis so many years later.

I don't think the ITKs are worth bothering with - be interesting to see what HCW has to say

Not sure , if it's a place that CB visited finding something of his would just confirm he was there, they need a link between CB and Madeleine. Imo.

The reports say the search will be 80% on land and 20% in the water. I wonder whether they are trying to find MM's clothes or something similar that CB might have buried there? It doesn't make sense to focus on land, does it?

Almost certainly not, but the German prosecutor/spokesman Wolters is a master at creating more uncertainty every time he speaks. So truthfully nobody knows for certain what they've found, or not found.
