Possibly from the accents, if they do actually have a tape of some sort. when HCW said “we want to know where he lived, and what his homes looked like from the inside” made me think they had photos or videos. If there’s some british accents in the videos that might be why they’ve specifically said british tourists?

The Mirror have named Bernhard Piro as the autotrader that kept ahold of one of Christians VW vans and also attempted to bail him out from the diesel theft. I would imagine he put him to stealing it for him, for whatever reason. Sorry no link as I can't link on this phone.
