Are details of where he is from in Germany coming out yet? I don't think we are allowed to say in here but we are allowed to ask and get a yes or no answer, I believe

Bavaria, originally. They listed the jail too. Read the Daily Mail (and the never read it again).

As far as I know, it's just said to be the region of Braunschweig, because the Departement of public prosecution in Braunschweig is responsible for him so he lived there at some Point in his life.

Sure, I completely agree with you, he certainly does not deserve a normal life. I just don't like the idea that he has to suffer from media coverage for something he didn't do.
I don't know about Germany, but in many countries there's a concern about the right to a fair trail, that too much information released by police, before it is proven and revealed in court, will contaminate the right to be presumed innocent before proven guilty.

ETA, in Canada, it can lead to a successful appeal of the trial and a murderer getting off.

Looking at the uncensored photo he has a normal nose and isn’t spotty are the two things that jump out straight away.

the original suspect was spotty and has a long nose.

This from The Sun...

He is currently serving a seven-year sentence in the German city of Kiel for the horrific rape of an American pensioner in 2006 in the Algarve...

The serial criminal, originally from Bavaria, also dealt drugs and committed robbery...

According to the Federal Central Register, he was convicted in 1994 in Bavaria of the "abuse of a child" and "sexual acts against a child".

A court in Würzburg sentenced the then-17-year-old to only two years - a youth sentence which he only served part of.

We had the same thing here, I think it was five years ago? Someone raped and killed a girl, I think she was about eight years old, and they had a suspect pretty fast. They didn't arrest him, but his name was everywhere, and one night a bunch of people attacked him in a parking lot and beat him, threw stones at him and let him there, bleeding and unconsciuos. Ambulance was not called until three hours later by a homeless guy who went in a restaurant and insisted that somebody calls the police. They did not have any evidence at this point, just hearsay. The guy was declared innocent the next day, as he had a waterproof alibi. He was in a a coma for a long time, I don't know if he has any issues today, but in the media they reported heavy wounds at his head, so I guess he has. This makes me so sad to this day.

That's absolutely awful:(

I remember the parents of the girl giving money to his family to press charges against his attackers. And I think the guy who killed the girl apologized to the guys family as well when he was arrested.
And everybody felt sorry and said this should never happen again. And yet it does. It's so sad.

A couple of things.

Was the woman he raped 72 back in 2005 or is she 72 now? It's not very clear from the news articles.

Why was he prosecuted and jailed in Germany? Shouldn't the country where the crime was committed (Portugal) be doing that?
It appears he became a suspect in the McCann case in 2017, that was when he made a confession in the bar, which I guess was soon after reported to police. At that time, he was likely in Germany, and a free man. So, German police would have at that point been asked to investigate him.

Subsequently, he's been arrested and prosecuted for the rape case in 2006. I suspect that, in questioning his former associates in Portugual, the issue of the rape incident emerge, his DNA was tested and matched to that case. German police arrested him, but, IMO, would not want to send him to Portugual for trial, in case he was acquitted, released, and disappeared.

So, my suspicion is, he is in Germany because he's suspected of Maddie's murder, and no one trusts Portugual police or courts any more. JMO

Moment of scepticism..

This is a man living in the vicinity with a record of sexual abuse of little girls. Why was he written off as a suspect initially?

Thinking about that as well ... could be because they focused more on the parents at this point I guess?

Who was the witness that reported that man? Perhaps the original suspect was not involved in the crime...

Just to play devil’s advocate, the fact that he was only charged for the rape of then 72 year old woman since he was arrested as a suspect for MM is potentially iffy given that we only seem to have a hair sample and speculative video that no one else has seen as evidence.

If someone did want to use him as a scapegoat, this might be the way to do it.

They knew a lot of this information in 2007, especially the phone information. They tracked down all the cell tower information at the time. Linked call data with names where possible. More work on telephone data should have been done at the time. Various police forces across Europe would have kept an eye on the suspects, not too difficult to do.

Something 'new' has materialized against this suspect, but it's not 'iron clad'. He's in prison, maybe 'he's spilled the beans' to a fellow prisoner (the suspect is refusing to talk to the German police about it). The fellow prisoner might be looking for a deal. Maybe he's had visitors who he's confided in, they in turn have spoken to the police. Maybe the police planted a 'police officer' and he 'spilled the beans'.

Maybe a member of the public has come forward with new info, happens all the time. The German police aren't mincing their words.

The fact that he's not talking to the police is a 'big clue', what has he got to hide?

I think he spilled the beans drunkenly in a bar three years ago and they’ve been working on a timeline ever since.

Good theory! I guess some random drunk dude talking all kind of 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 is just not enough to put him on trial :D

Things have certainly ramped up overnight! It sounds like they have been seriously investigating this guy for three years and the detail of their suspicions is pretty impressive I think.
Also, last night, there was a lot of discussion about the suspect being part of an organized group or ring, but today it feels a whole more like he may be the only perpetrator.

Interesting: he is apparently from Wurzburg originally, and there is a Jaguar dealer in Wurzburg with the same surname.

That is really interesting - thanks for sharing. Could be him or someone else - there seems to be tons of men with the same name as him (probably all cursing right now).

yes, and if the police have the right man, but he walks away due to an 'unfair trial' appeal - what a waste of all that police time. the likely offender walks away due to a legal technicality, rather than due to his innocence. the media have a lot to answer for when it gets to that point. but also the general public might want to take some blame - with that eagerness to hear everything before the case is decided.

Just another thought, if he was travelling and living in his mini van throughout the period in question, he would have needed fuel, so that could provide quite a lot of clues (only thing is that information might no longer be available and that's if he paid by credit / debit card. He was a car trader so probably only dealt in cash.
