Major Power Outage AZ & CA

  • #21
Tens of thousands of people were without power after a major outage knocked out electricity from Southern California to the Arizona border on Thursday afternoon, halting flights in San Diego, the nation's eighth largest city.

Outages were reported across San Diego County and all the way to Yuma, Ariz. Residents in San Clemente in Orange County, north of San Diego, also said their lights were out.

Most of the northern part of Baja California, including the border city of Tijuana, also was without power, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The power went out about 3:45 p.m.

They said residents should be prepared to be without power for quite some time.

A SDG&E spokesman said that the outage started with a problem on a transmission line in Arizona.

According to Cal-ISO "a 500k high-voltage line from AZ to CA tripped out of service."

That caused a sequence of events that shut down both generators at San Onofre Nuclear Power Station.

Gil Alexander, a spokesman for Southern California Edison, said the power outage did not cause any safety issues. Alexander said a fluctuation in power caused the reactors to shut down at 3:38 p.m. but that the overall plant continues to have power.

I wish I knew what they meant when they said because they make me wonder sometimes..

An SDG&E official just stated, "We expect power to be out well into the night and into tomorrow in some areas."

A transmitter line between Arizona and California was severed, causing both major connections in the region, causing the outage. The extreme heat in some areas also may have caused some problems with the lines, according to SDG&E.

"Essentially we have two connections from the rest of the world: One of from the north and one is to the east. Both connections are severed," said the SDG&E official.

The FBI and SDG&E officials said the power outage is not related to the terror threat.

Doesn't San Onofre use nuclear power? Is that what they are reporting about?

San Diego Gas and Electric officials said all 1.4 million of its customers were without power. In addition, southern Orange County and Baja California from Tijuana to Ensenada were also blacked out.

Officials said they were scrambling to find out the cause of the outage and restore power as soon as possible, but they did not know how long it would take. They said residents should be prepared to be without power into Friday morning.

The link above confirms it is a nuclear power plant.

I have a sneaking suspicion there will be quite a baby boom in the affected areas 9 months from now...June 2012 watch for it...lol

Seriously though...I'm so sorry for all of those suffering the heat because of the outage.

Path 46, also called West of Colorado River, Arizona-California West-of-the-River Path (WOR), is a set of many alternating current high-voltage transmission lines that are located in southeast California and Nevada up to the Colorado River.[1] This power transmission system is essential to meet the electricity demands of Southern California's massive population centers like Los Angeles and San Diego. The massive system has three separate systems of power lines.[2]
