"Chinese satellites' real-time surveillance capability will likely be strengthened after this incident," said Chi, a professor with the academy's Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth in Beijing.

Chi said his biggest regret was that while China had enough satellites to monitor a large area around the clock, including the search zone, the job had not been done. Monitoring every bit of land and sea would require a dedicated staff, he added.

For three days, Chinese researchers have employed high-resolution satellite imaging equipment to search for the Boeing aircraft. This has included satellites with many different sensors, including high-resolution optical telescopes, infrared cameras, synthetic aperture radar and microwave detectors.

The search project has also used military satellites with classified technological details. In addition, China has paid overseas commercial satellite companies to use their advanced satellites and to obtain their data.

The satellite equipment allowed researchers to examine specific areas of the sea for wreckage and debris day and night, under all kinds of weather conditions, Chi said.

Chi would not comment as to the size of objects that the satellites could detect but added that the resolution was "definitely high enough for the job".

The way I read it, they didn't have enough people in house to do it. Hence the delay.

But if this was the case then we would have heard that stuff was found.

We don't hear anything from China until China wants us to...imo. Never forget just how much of the US debt China loaned/holds too.

I don't think the article ever mentioned that. It just said that a body was found wearing a life vest.

thanks, I saw there was discussion saying planes didn't have this type of vest and I thought it could just be a question of different language uses to describe the thing

Maybe, probably. I was just wondering if the radar caught a big enough piece of the plane moving in the opposite direction, would the radar reading people view that as the whole plane having "turned" around? I know it has been said by US officials that there was no "explosion" from their research done. But if the plane broke apart for some reason and the metal pieces went scattering in the air, would a big enough piece show up on radar?

Possible that the plane was in one piece when it hit the water. Thats why there was no large debris field, just a few pieces. The rest would have sunk.

Does the location fit too with the bright white light reported by the businessman at 1:45am?

I do think that translation was probably made as simply understood to perceived audience as possible, and quickly.

China is heavily invested in USA commerce and real estate. They must not be underestimated nor despised because of that. Works 2 ways, does money.

In the global sense we should be concerned with the people missing-not the EXACT logistics of how they are found.

Maybe their internal security measures are more profound than that of US? Or less invaded?

My Opinion Only

Include any and all discussion between the many nations involved and who should handle it, so that normal international relations remain civil.

And Russia taking over bases in the Ukraine has taken a very back seat all of a sudden. :(

Coincidence???

The only way the plane could have hit the water in one piece is if it was falling/flying at a relatively low altitude. I don't know how low the plane was flying when it was reported 'that a low flying aircraft was seen.' Could it have been low enough to land in the water in one piece before breaking apart?

Oh... China is certainly not whom I despise...

Which authorities. I know that the actual recordings of the CVR are never released here in the U.S. though transcripts often are.

I was wondering whether the incident will be investigated by a "neutral" commission rather than to be swept under rug (by locals or military in authority), depending on the actual cause of the crash.

AirFrance 447 was in one piece when it hit the water.

I assume the NTSB will conduct its own investigation regardless of what Malaysia or China does. Who gets custody of the black boxes when they are located? I don't honestly know that. I suppose its whoever brings them to the surface. Or does MAL get to decide since they own the plane?

" (Reuters) - Boeing Co on Wednesday said the missing 777 Malaysia Airlines jetliner was not subject to a new U.S. safety directive that ordered additional inspections for cracking and corrosion on certain 777 planes.

The Federal Aviation Administration last week ordered additional, repeated inspections of certain Boeing 777 aircraft, warning that corrosion and cracking could lead to rapid decompression and damage to the structure of the aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration told airlines to inspect U.S. registered aircraft for cracking, corrosion and potential repairs after receiving a report about a 16-inch crack in the fuselage skin underneath an adapter for the airplane's satellite communications antenna.

true Boeing said it worked closely with the FAA to monitor the fleet for potential safety issues and take appropriate actions. But it said the 777-200ER Malaysia Airlines aircraft did not have that antenna installed and was not subject to the FAA order."

Maybe you all saw this before, is this debris captured Sunday by China satellite the same as spotted by Cathay on Monday?

Monday, March 10: Chinese satellites deployed in search for missing Malaysia Airlines jet as Cathay crew 'spot debris'

...As the Malaysian authorities announced they were doubling the size of the search area, Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department said it had received a report from the crew of a Cathay Pacific plane flying from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur at about 3pm that debris was spotted near Vung Tau, off southeast Vietnam.

I saw a map online of what country/countries control sections of the water. Maybe it is the country who controls that section?

Can someone please tell me why the posts about the timing of China releasing these satellite photos have disappeared?

Satellite looking into missing Malaysia flight detects 'suspected crash area'
By Jethro Mullen and Michael Pearson, CNN
updated 5:15 PM EDT, Wed March 12, 2014

(CNN) -- A Chinese satellite looking into the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 "observed a suspected crash area at sea," a Chinese government agency said -- a potentially pivotal lead into what has been a frustrating search for the Boeing 777.

China's State Administration for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense announced the discovery, including images of what it said were "three suspected floating objects and their sizes." The objects aren't small at 13 by 18 meters (43 by 59 feet), 14 by 19 meters and 24 by 22 meters.

The images were captured on March 9 -- which was the day after the plane went missing -- but weren't released until Wednesday.

The Chinese agency gave coordinates of 105.63 east longitude, 6.7 north latitude, which would put it in waters northeast of where it took off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and south of Vietnam.

MAP: Oil Rig is at point labeled South China Sea; red marker is site of wreckage found just today by Chinese satellite. According the the spokesman on the video, the site coincides with the oil rigger's witness accounts and would be the logical place to find it if the plane did not turn around.

Have to add, this is eerie, as I've spent the last two hours on Tomnod clicking 35 spots on satellite images taken March 9.

ETA: Correcting wording to say "site of potential wreckage announced just today" (satellite pics taken Sunday)>

I would guess that part of the delay on the part of the Chinese could be that they don't want to let it be known the resolution of their spy satellite cameras. This would be very highly classified info. I am guessing that if they have released these photos, they are NOT the clearest that they have.

Maybe they will share better pics with NTSB, or the already have and this spurred the release.
