Presidents Obama has spoken with his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko, who have both stressed that the crash site must remain intact in Ukraine until international investigators can examine "all aspects of the tragedy", according to the White House.

Why are there bodies and other items such as luggage that are not burnt? The video CNN is showing over and over clearly shows a fireball when the plane hit the earth.

Reuters reports: Most of the 283 passengers aboard the Malaysia Airlines jet that crashed over eastern Ukraine on Thursday were Dutch, the airline's European chief said.

Malaysia Airlines senior vice president Huib Gorter said there were at least 154 Dutch, 27 Australians, 23 Malaysians, 11 Indonesians, six Britons, four Germans, four Belgians, three Phillippinos and one Canadian aboard the Boeing 777 jet.

There were a further 47 passengers whose nationality was not yet known. All the 15 flight crew were Malaysian.

Probably because the plane broke up a bit on impact so not everyone would have been directly effected by the blast.

I'm sorry I don't have a link, but I heard on CNN when a local reported was interviewed, that the crash site is spread over 10 miles.

I am thinking not only of the loved ones of those on board, but also of the staff at Malaysia Airlines. Twice this year they have lost some of their colleagues in the course of their work. It must be a horrific time for them and so difficult to get onto the planes and continue with their jobs.

I feel that the cabin crew, just doing their jobs are often forgotten in these situations.

I think it did break up before impact. I saw someone in the middle of a road that was still buckled in the seat. The person was intact for the most part, but I didn't sit there and stare at the pic. A little disturbing.

I thought so too. I think it will take time for the accurate facts to come out. I'm always a little skeptical of early reporting. I do however think this means it's a very large crash site.

It is looking increasingly likely a Russian separatist movement was behind the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines flight as it passed over Ukraine toward the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has made a statement regarding the incident to a meeting of economic advisors. The statement - released by the Kremlin and translate by AP is below:

Dear colleagues!

You know that a terrible event occurred today in the sky over Ukraine, an awful tragedy - a civilian plane was killed, 285 people, according to preliminary information, were killed.

On behalf of the Russian leadership and the Russian government, we express condolences to the bereaved families, the governments of those countries whose nationals were on that plane. I ask you to honor their memory.

(A moment of silence)

In this regard, I want to note that this tragedy would not have happened if there were peace on this land, if the military actions had not been renewed in southeast Ukraine. And, certainly, the state over whose territory this occurred bears responsibility for this awful tragedy.

I have already given instructions to the military departments to provide all necessary assistance in the investigation of this crime. And I also ask the government of the Russian Federation through the available civilian agencies that have the capability to do everything for a thorough investigation of this event. We will do everything - everything that depends on us, anyway - in order that the objective picture of what happened is part of the public domain here, in Ukraine and in the rest of the world. This is an absolutely unacceptable thing, and no one has the right to let this pass without the appropriate conclusions and without all of us having objective information about the incident.

About the comments above about there being no Russians on board. I would have expected that. Unless they were expats I can't think what reason they would have to be going that route. All of the nationalities listed make sense for the flight taken as part of a route either to or from those countries.

That's right. I remember when I was living in Germany I used to buy flights going from the Netherlands to Asia because it was cheaper to go to Amsterdam by train and then board a flight than fly from within Germany. I guess Britons and people in other surrounding European countries might do the same. It depends on which airlines offer a good deal and where they fly from.

The Asians and Australians on the flight were obviously on their way home.
