Maybe it's just me, but I really don't care what country the victims are from. Each and every one of them are victims of this senseless act of violence. Not one of them deserve to be dead no matter their nationality or country of origin.

No, I don't either, I just don't see the Australian government taking this quietly or accepting a bunch of excuses for what is essentially an act of terrorism against Australian citizens. I think lives of ALL of the people on that were precious and didn't deserve to end that way, just to be clear. And I'm not Australian, by the way.

I'd expect them (Australia) to cancel Putin's invitation to an important meeting coming up shortly there. More importantly I would look for them to take economic sanctions against Russian interests in their country. Expecting the Russian people to do anything about the 🤬🤬🤬🤬 they have running their country is a bit much. I suspect most Russians admire this guy because he 'stands up' for them. The only way they are going to get rid of him is if his reckless actions bring hardship and misery on them.

I would rather we did not bring hardship and misery to the people of Russia. I don't think that part of the world has a very good record of treating it's poor people very well. Making people hungry and desperate isn't the way to overthrow a government. In fact, it might just increase instability and bring out the extremist wackos of the world.

I hope we disengage from Russia as if they do not exist .. we should not associate with a country capable of supporting others who would do this.

The thanks button wasn't enough. My thoughts and prayers are with all those lost. It's a very sad day.

Dear Brightbird, I hate to disagree with anyone who has such a MAGNIFICENT cat as an avatar, but I think the extremist wackos of the world are already out and romping around fairly unrestrained. See, Middle East, Balkans, Africa, Central America, etc.

I don't know the answer to that question but my guess (or current opinion) would be yes.
I also don't know whether Russia has those kind of far reaching missile shooters
but again my guess (or current opinion) would be yes.
And there are some who wonder if Russia could be complicit in this incident
by supplying the pro-Russian separtists with those kind of shooters.

A poster in the first couple pages posted that either Russia or Ukraine has missile launchers that can shoot over 70 000 feet.
Which would explain how a passenger jet flying at cruising altitude was able to be shot down.

I've asked myself. How often does 1 person win a jackpot lottery twice in 6 months?

I also wonder if MH370 was a "test run", it passed, now to the next MAS 777. But why Malaysia? Hmm.

Well, given how disorganized Malaysia's response to the first incident was they probably couldn't have picked a 'better' target. Plus, I guess Malaysia Air regularly flies over Ukraine airspace. I have no idea whether or not these two incidents are related but it does make you say 'hmmmmm.'

One of the world's leading AIDS Professors/researchers and head of the World AIDS Society JOEP LANGE among those killed in #MH17

Confirmation many leading and high profile AIDS scientists, Doctors, researchers and activists were among the 29 killed in MH17 disaster.

The doomed flight was scheduled to change at Kuala Lumpur to MH129 and fly to Melbourne where an International AIDS conference was to begin next week.

From 1992 until 1995 ran such efforts on a global scale as a chief of the World Health Organization's Clinical Research and Product Development branch of the Global Programme on AIDS. Under Dr. Lange, the Research and Development unit worked to promote and initiate prevention, diagnosis and treatment projects throughout the world. Such projects continue in Argentina, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

RIP The world has lost a good man. May his work live on.

A test run for what, though?

As of right now, I don't think the incidents are connected.
It's just weird that both incidents involve Malaysia Air...

MH370 was no test run for this random disaster IMO. Two completely unrelated events .. the only similarity is the airline which only increases the tragedy if that is possible.

Lol, that cat is trying to attack my feet right now. I agree with you, but I also think that extremist views tend to flourish where there is deprivation and poverty. I just don't like the idea of sanctions that punish the most vulnerable people the most. It's a long shot to hope it will lead to a successful uprising against an already corrupt government.

Malaysia Airlines has immediately changed the routes of its European flights to avoid the region.

"With immediate effect, all European flights operated by Malaysia Airlines will be taking alternative routes avoiding the usual route," said a statement from the airline.

"The usual flight route was earlier declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions."

However Central Queensland University accident investigation and safety specialist Professor Geoff Dell says the airline should never have been flying over the country.

"From as soon as the conflict started they shouldn't have been going anywhere near it," Dell told AAP.

"They should've shifted to alternate routes, like all the other airlines seemed to have done."

"You just don't go anywhere near it unless you've got no alternatives and there's always the alternative of not going."

I can't see Malaysia Air surviving this latest disaster, the lawsuits that are coming are going to bury that company.

One cannot help but wonder if the two incidents are somehow related especially as no part of MH370 has been located.

It is an extremely tragic day, however, for the airline having one plane "disappear" four months ago and one being shot out of the sky today. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families. Just heartbreaking.

More on that discussion around the airline's decision not to avoid a flight path over the Ukraine:

Australian airline Qantas has told Reuters it shifted its London to Dubai route away from Ukrainian airspace several months ago. The spokesman declined to say why, but the crisis in Ukraine has been escalating since November.

"Qantas could not, however, speak for its code-share partners. Qantas is a conservative airlines who will take safety to its highest point. Many other airlines continued to fly over Ukraine" ..... Ch 7 TV report

Qantas has an excellent reputation and it seems the spokesman didn't need to say but the rest of the world realizes: common sense would dictate that a 'reasonable person' would not fly over that area.

Common sense sadly is not that common to paraphrase Mark Twain

Once again I believe the Malaysian people will be examining the leadership of MAS.....and the transportation authorities in general in their country.
