One year after the body of a mystery man was found in a Queensland river, police still hope to one day return the John Doe to loved ones.

On November 30, 2023, the body of the unknown man was found floating under a bridge in the Maroochy River in Maroochydore by a member of the public.

CCTV footage of the man released.

Bumping this post as I was thinking of this case today and I see this poor man remains unidentified.

There’s speculation he remains unidentified because he was a tourist from overseas as he was found in a popular tourist spot.

Since the discovery of the man’s remains, police have made public appeals, conducted DNA testing and have been working to match the internal surgical nails in the man’s right knee with a hospital.

They have made enquiries through the global INTERPOL network.

But as of March 2025 he remains unidentified.

The man is described as 189cm tall, heavy-set build with very short brown hair.

While the man doesn’t have any tattoos or other unique identifying features, he does have internal surgical nails in his right knee.

He was found wearing a black t-shirt, black shorts with thin silver pinstripes down the rear of the legs and two cream coloured knee compression sleeves.

I’ve wondered if he was perhaps European and if his knee surgery was a result of playing football/soccer in his youth.

Police determined the man likely died by suicide.

His autopsy revealed he was heavily intoxicated with a blood-alcohol level of 0.3 or six times the legal driving limit.

So sad. I did wonder this, given he was found in water near a bridge and no one has identified him yet. I also wondered about the bandages on both knees and whether he suffered from ongoing chronic pain.

He probably worked a job where he had to be on his knees constantly- like a tiler.
Looking at his belongings:
APT Backpack-Known for luxury travel, may have been on a cruise, although could have been picked up from a op shop
Woolworths bag, extremely common
Also I feel like he may be a New Zealander.

Identified as Alexander Marinis, age 47, originally from Victoria. He moved to Queensland 2 weeks before his death and had not been in contact with his family for more than ten years.

"Earlier this year, detectives made a breakthrough.

A Centrelink worker saw his face in an ABC story and remembered an interaction with him.

That recollection was the crucial first step that led police to identify Mr Marinis.

His body was brought home for a funeral in Melbourne last month, where he was farewelled by friends and family.

Mr Marinis was 47"

Mr Marinis's mother, Maree Bergamo, said she was devastated to learn of her son's death when she was contacted by authorities earlier this year.

His death came after he gradually, then completely withdrew, from his family 10 years ago.

"Alex was an intelligent, decent and loyal person,"
she said.
"I found out that he had passed on February 13, some 14 months after his death.

"It was distressing to know that he had been deceased for such a long time."

Rest in Peace Mr Marinis.

What a very sad story. He was loved, he was talented, but it appears he had inner demons. This one touched me. Very, very sad. :(

His mother did everything she could to keep track of him, even hiring private investigators and once she did find him but he wouldn't open the door :(

She then exchanged phone numbers with one of his neighbours to let her know if he moved.
