Martin left West Hartford, Connecticut in May 1980, leaving his job at McDonalds with 2 weeks notice and saying he was headed to California. He also closed his bank accounts and withdrew about $600. He rented a car, and 10 days later he turned in in Huntsville, Alabama. The car was driven 1,700 miles, indicating he had not driven directly from West Hartford to Alabama. Martin wasn't reported missing until 1999.
