Mass. Confirms 4,464 New COVID Cases After Skipping Report on Thanksgiving

Massachusetts reported nearly 4,500 new confirmed coronavirus cases Friday, but cautioned that it included reports from the past two days. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health did not publish a daily COVID-19 report on Thanksgiving, which resulted in the extended period of time for new cases to be tallied.

The 4,464 new confirmed cases and 29 new deaths reflected case counts from Wednesday afternoon through Friday morning, the DPH noted on its website.

There have now been 10,401 confirmed deaths and 211,748 cases, according to DPH. Another 234 deaths are considered probably linked to COVID-19.

The percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive, on average, ticked up slightly to 3.28%, according to the report.

The number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 has increased to 986. Of that number, 209 were listed as being in intensive care units and 109 are intubated, according to DPH.

COVID cases in Mass. jumped 57% last week as state reports 3,627 new cases, 40 deaths Tuesday
State health officials confirmed another 3,627 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, bringing the number of active cases statewide to 58,601.

There have now been 253,649 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Massachusetts since the pandemic began in the spring, data shows.

Officials also announced another 40 COVID-related fatalities, bringing the total number of dead to 10,833 since the start of the pandemic.

The number of hospitalizations statewide increased to 1,552, including 310 patients in intensive care.

The seven-day average of positive tests continues to go up, reaching 5.81% on Tuesday. That’s up from a low of 0.8% just several months ago.

Numbers reported from last week show a post-Thanksgiving week spike. Updated data now shows COVID cases jumped 57% for the week beginning Nov. 29 over the previous week. That percentage will likely continue to rise as additional positive cases from last week are reported.

As cases continue rising at alarming rates, Gov. Charlie Baker on Tuesday announced that all Massachusetts communities will move back to the first step of Phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan, meaning more restrictions for restaurants, public gatherings and other businesses.

Baker said maximum capacity for outdoor events statewide will change from 100 people to 50 people. The order will require gyms, arcades, libraries, museums and some other businesses to reduce allowable capacity from 50% to 40%. Indoor restaurant seating will be limited to six people per table.

The rollback comes a day after Baker announced hospitals will curtail elective in-patient procedures beginning on Friday. Baker said the ongoing spike in cases is compounded by staffing shortages at a number of hospitals across the state. Officials say those shortages are linked to an increased number of hospital workers calling out of work due to COVID exposure.

“Even with these additional resources, we can’t afford to continue to strain the hospital system at this rate,” Baker said.

Baker also on Monday announced that the state will set up free COVID testing sitesin counties that previously lacked those resources, including Berkshire, Franklin and Hampshire counties, as well as Barnstable County.

The vaccine will be produced at a manufacturing site in Andover, among other locations around the world. Health care workers will be among the first to get the vaccine.
