4,985 new COVID-19 cases, 44 additional deaths reported in Massachusetts

While Massachusetts is just a day or two away from the state's 300,000th case of COVID-19, the latest weekly public health report indicates that more than 206,000 people have now recovered from the virus.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 4,985 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 297,301.


Thursday's report also added 44 new deaths to the state's total, which is now 11,305 since the start of the pandemic.

An estimated 76,215 cases are active across the state, according to the report

As of Thursday, 1,871 patients with confirmed coronavirus cases were hospitalized in Massachusetts, of which 383 were reported to be in an intensive care unit.

Mass. crosses 300,000+ COVID-19 case mark with 5,632 new positives reported by DPH
With the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reporting 5,632 additional COVID-19 cases Friday, it crossed an unwelcomed threshold:
The state has seen more than 300,000 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. As of Friday, the total number of cases statewide now stands at 302,933.

Friday's report also added 53 new deaths to the state's total, which is now 11,358 since the start of the pandemic.

An estimated 80,989 cases are active across the state, according to the report

As of Friday, 1,874 patients with confirmed coronavirus cases were hospitalized in Massachusetts, of which 370 were reported to be in an intensive care unit.

In its weekly report on Thursday, 187 communities were in the "Red," or at high risk of COVID-19, up from 158 communities last week.

The latest weekly public health report also indicated that more than 206,000 people have now recovered from the virus.

Massachusetts reports 3,995 new coronavirus cases, 47 more deaths on Saturday

Another 3,995 Massachusetts residents have tested positive for thecoronavirus and there are 81,282 cases currently active in the state, health officials said Saturday.

Those new cases are based on 80,214 molecular tests. The seven-day average positivity rate of tests is 6.01%, up from a low of 0.8% in September, according to data from the state Department of Public Health. Excluding higher education institutions, the state’s positivity rate is 7.79%.

Health officials on Saturday also announced 47 more deaths from the virus. So far through the pandemic, Massachusetts has seen at least 306,928 positive cases of COVID and 11,405 related deaths.

As of Saturday, 1,927 people are hospitalized with the virus, with 383 in the intensive care unit. The seven-day average of hospitalized patients with confirmed cases of the coronavirus is 1,836.

The seven-day average of confirmed cases is currently 3,074. Over the summer, the state saw a low of 157, per DPH data.

This week, front-line health care workers in Massachusetts started receiving doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine. On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration authorized an emergency rollout of another vaccine by Cambridge-based Moderna.

Massachusetts reports 4,162 new COVID cases, 60 more deaths Sunday

Massachusetts public health officials on Sunday announced another 4,162 residents have tested positive for COVID-19

The state Department of Public Health also announced 60 new deaths linked to the virus. Since the pandemic began, Massachusetts has reported 11,465 deaths; when including probable cases, the death toll rises to 11,717.

The state has seen 311,090 cases over the course of the pandemic, which has infected more than 17 million Americans and killed more than 316,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Excluding higher education institutions, the state’s positivity rate is 7.53%.

As of Sunday, 1,919 people are hospitalized with the virus, including 387 in intensive care.

3,760 new COVID-19 cases, 41 additional deaths reported in Massachusetts

Health officials on Monday reported an additional 3,760 cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, bringing the statewide total to 314,850 since the start of the pandemic.

Monday's report also added 41 new deaths to the state's total, which is now 11,506.

An estimated 84,368 cases are active across the state, according to the report.

As of Monday, 1,991 patients with confirmed coronavirus cases were hospitalized in Massachusetts, of which 410 were reported to be in an intensive care unit.

Massachusetts health officials reported an additional 3,293 cases of COVID-19 in the state on Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 318,143 since the start of the pandemic.

Tuesday's report also added 43 new deaths to the state's total, which is now 11,549.

As of Tuesday, 2,004 patients with confirmed coronavirus cases were hospitalized in Massachusetts, of which 412 were reported to be in an intensive care unit.

State health officials confirmed 4,509 new COVID cases on Wednesday, bringing the number of active cases statewide to 81,112.

Health officials announced another 81 COVID-related fatalities, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths since the start of the pandemic to 11,630.

The number of COVID hospitalizations increased to 2,066, which includes 409 patients in intensive care, 226 of whom are currently intubated. The seven-day average of positive tests is 5.92%.

Massachusetts reports 5,655 new COVID cases, 76 deaths on Christmas Eve

State health officials confirmed another 5,655 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the number of active cases statewide to just over 80,000. That’s based on 114,476 new molecular tests, according to the Department of Public Health.

Officials also confirmed another 76 COVID-related fatalities on Christmas Eve, bringing the total numbers of deaths to 11,706.

COVID hospitalizations increased to 2,095, which includes 409 patients in intensive care, 232 of whom are currently intubated, data shows.

Massachusetts reports 7,424 new COVID cases, 46 deaths

State health officials confirmed 7,424 new coronavirus cases on Saturday.

Health officials also announced another 46 COVID-related fatalities, bringing the total number of COVID-related deaths in Massachusetts since the start of the pandemic to 11,752.

Saturday’s numbers include testing data from Thursday morning through end of day on Friday as state health officials did not publish the daily COVID report on Christmas Day.

The number of active coronavirus infections in the state increased to 78,086. Saturday’s new cases reflect 108,445 molecular tests.

There are currently 2,077 people hospitalized with suspected COVID-19 illness, and 416 patients are in the icu

Massachusetts reports 2,973 COVID cases and 100 deaths Sunday as US hits 19 million cases

Massachusetts public health officials reported another 2,973 positive COVID-19tests on Sunday, bringing the number of estimated active cases to 78,688 just as the nation surpassed 19 million cases.

The Department of Public Health also announced that 100 Massachusetts residents died from COVID-19, raising the statewide death toll to 11,852 since the pandemic began. When including probable COVID-19 cases, that figure rises to 12,110.

The seven-day average rate of positive tests now stands at 6.28%%, a sharp increase over the 0.8% low reported in September. Excluding tests administered at higher education institutions, the state’s positivity rate is 7.32%. Frequent testing on campuses had helped keep COVID-19 rates low at colleges and universities.

Currently, 2,156 people are in the hospital being treated for COVID-19, including 416 in intensive care.

Massachusetts reports 4,060 COVID cases and 48 deaths Monday

Massachusetts public health officials reported another 4,060 positive COVID-19 tests on Monday, bringing the number of estimated active cases to 80,620 just as CVS and Walgreens started administering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines at Massachusetts long-term care facilities.

The Department of Public Health also announced that 48 Massachusetts residents died from illness linked to COVID-19, raising the statewide death toll to 11,900 since the pandemic began. When including probable COVID-19 cases, that figure rises to 12,158.

The state has confirmed at least 342,764 cases this year.

At least 2,230 people are in the hospital being treated for COVID-19, including 430 in intensive care across the state.

State health officials confirmed another 3,659 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, bringing the number of active statewide cases to 78,215.

Officials also confirmed another 58 COVID-related fatalities on Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths so far to 11,958.

The seven-day average of positive tests increased to 7.58% — up nearly a whole percentage point since Monday.

There are now 2,259 people hospitalized with COVID-19 across the state, including 431 patients receiving intensive care. There are currently 225 patients intubated.

Massachusetts surpasses 12,000 COVID deaths, as officials report 6,135 new cases, 118 deaths ahead of New Year’s Eve

State health officials confirmed another 6,135 COVID cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of active cases statewide to 78,810.

Officials announced another 118 COVID-related deaths, bringing the total number of COVID fatalities to 12,076.

The seven-day average of positive tests increased to 8.44%, which is up nearly a one percentage point from the average on Tuesday.

There are currently 2,259 people hospitalized with COVID-19, which is two fewer than yesterday, although overall hospitalizations have been trending upward. Of those, 433 patients are in intensive care. There are 231 patients currently intubated, data shows. At the peak in May, there were nearly 4,000 people hospitalized with COVID.

The average age of COVID hospitalization in Massachusetts has also been rising. On Nov. 30 it was 65 and as of today is 73.

Mass. Sets Daily COVID Case Record

Massachusetts set a daily COVID-19 case record Thursday, reporting 6,887, according to the state's Department of Public Health.

The previous single-day record was Dec. 3, though that day's report included nearly 700 backlogged cases. There were 7,424 cases reported on Dec. 26, but that included two days' worth of cases, since the Department of Public Health didn't report any on Christmas Day.

There have now been 359,445 cases confirmed in Massachusetts, with Thursday's 81 deaths bringing the toll to 12,157, according to health officials. Another 266 deaths are considered probably linked to COVID-19.

The percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive, on average, has increased to 8.6%, according to the report.

The number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 has increased to 2,271. Of that number, 417 were listed as being in intensive care units and 240 are intubated, according to DPH.

Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday said about 78,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered statewide as of Tuesday, and an estimated 20,000 people who live and work at long-term care facilities should be vaccinated at one of 50 vaccination clinics by the end of this week.

A report from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health was not released on New Year’s Day, so Saturday’s data includes cases from midnight on Dec. 31 through 11:59 p.m. on January 1.

The seven-day weighted average of positive test stands at 8.67%, up from a low of 0.8% in September. Not including positive tests collected on college and university campuses, the state’s positivity is at 9.40%
There are 2,280 people hospitalized with the virus as of Saturday, with 412 in the intensive care unit. Currently, the seven-day average number of coronavirus patients in the hospital is 2,254, per DPH.

Another 79 deaths related to the virus were also announced Saturday. So far through the pandemic, Massachusetts has had at least 367,987 residents test positive and has seen 12,236 deaths.

As of Thursday, Massachusetts has received 285,050 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and has administered 78,643 of those doses.

State health officials confirmed another 4,358 cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the number of active statewide cases to 81,449.

Officials also announced another 60 COVID-related fatalities, for a total now of 12,401 confirmed deaths since the start of the pandemic.

There are currently 2,339 patients hospitalized with the respiratory infection, or with COVID-like symptoms, including 423 in intensive care. Of those, 258 are currently intubated, data shows.

The seven-day average of positive tests is currently 8.50%.

The latest numbers come the day state health officials launched a new interactive COVID dashboard, giving users a closer look at COVID stats with “data filters” and a better visual layout.

COVID deaths continue to rise as Massachusetts reports 6,419 new cases, 99 deaths on Wednesday
Massachusetts health officials confirmed another 6,419 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the active statewide count to 79,967. That’s based on 102,573 new molecular tests reported on Wednesday, according to the Department of Public Health.

Health officials also announced another 99 COVID-related fatalities, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 12,563. COVID deaths in Mass. rose by nearly 12% last week, the tenth week in a row that deaths in Mass. have climbed week-over-week.

The average age of those dying from COVID is 81 years old. Although that has been fairly consistent throughout the pandemic, the average age of those hospitalized has been steadily rising. It is now at 73 years old compared to 65 years old a little more than a month ago.

The seven-day average of positive tests is currently 8.25%. There are 2,416 Massachusetts residents hospitalized with COVID-19, including 442 patients in intensive care, and 281 currently intubated.

Massachusetts reports 7,136 new COVID cases, 71 deaths on Thursday as hospitals reach 84% bed capacity

State health officials confirmed another 7,136 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the number of active cases statewide to 81,604.

Health officials also confirmed another 71 COVID-related fatalities, for a total now of 12,634 confirmed deaths from the respiratory infection since the pandemic began.

There are currently 2,386 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across the state, including 455 patients in intensive care, and 277 intubated.

The seven-day average of positive tests dipped slightly, from more than 8% to 7.83% on Thursday.

The latest numbers come as state health officials moved to raise Massachusetts hospitals to Tier 4 status, giving hospitals the ability to coordinate patient treatment as capacity continues to strain across the state.

“Our hospital capacity limits are being stretched to their limit,” Health and Human Services Services Marylou Sudders said on Thursday.

Roughly 84% of hospital beds statewide are presently occupied, with 75% of ICU beds now filled, Gov. Charlie Baker said on Thursday. At the end of December, larger hospitals in the Boston area were already strained as community hospitals already at capacitywere redirecting patients to them.

Massachusetts reports 7,110 COVID cases, 90 more deaths on Saturday

Another 7,110 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in Massachusetts, bringing the number of active cases in the state to 88,845, health officials said Saturday.

An additional 90 deaths related to the virus were also announced Saturday.

So far through the pandemic, at least 407,933 Massachusetts residents have tested positive for the virus and 12,798 have died.

Currently, there are 2,291 people hospitalized with the virus, including 445 in the intensive care unit. The average age of hospitalized patients is 73, according to DPH. As of Saturday, the seven-day average of hospitalizations is 2,342.

Coronavirus vaccinations for police officers and emergency personnel will start on Monday.

Since last month, 141,108 doses of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines have been administered in Massachusetts. Both vaccines require two doses, and 1,213 second doses have been administered in the state so far as of Thursday.
