Massachusetts reports fewer than 1,000 new COVID cases for second straight day as active infections drop to 28,043

Active COVID cases decreased by more than 1,500 on Tuesday, from 29,601 to 28,043, according to the latest data from the Department of Public Health.

State health officials confirmed another 825 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. That’s based on 51,383 new molecular tests

Officials also announced another four COVID-related fatalities, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to 17,215.

The seven-day average of positive tests is 1.71% as of Tuesday, down slightly from 1.72% the day before.

The number of COVID patients currently hospitalized on Tuesday is 628, up from 625 reported Monday. Of them, 158 are in intensive care, and 93 are intubated, data shows.

There have been a total of 5,827,318 COVID vaccine doses administered in Massachusetts to date, and 2,394,013 residents, or 34% of the state’s population, are now fully vaccinated. About 49% have received at least one vaccine dose.

Over the last two weeks, 1,223 cases were confirmed in children younger than four, down from 1,235 reported the week before. Officials reported 1,400 infections in children between the ages of 5 and 9, down from 1,469 since the last update. And 1,696 infections were confirmed in children between the ages of 10 and 14, which is down from 1,816 reported on April 14, according to data released on Wednesday.

There were 2,481 teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 infected with COVID over the last 14 days, down from 2,696 since the last update.

And last week, officials confirmed another 5,046 cases among 20-somethings, down from the 5,942 reported during the last update.

Massachusetts reports 1,115 new COVID cases, 7 more deaths as active cases decrease

Massachusetts is seeing decreasing numbers of active COVID-19 cases as the state on Saturday reported 1,115 new infections and seven more deaths.

As of Saturday, there are 24,631 active coronavirus cases in Massachusetts, down from 25,474 on Friday. So far through the pandemic, the state has seen at least 646,982 residents test positive for the virus and 17,266 have died

More than 2.5 million residents have been vaccinated. As of Friday, Massachusetts has used 85% of the vaccine doses shipped to the state.

The seven-day average percent of positive tests is 1.56%, a figure that has been decreasing in recent weeks.

The seven-day average death count has taken a steep decline in April, data indicates, and reached a low of 9.3 on April 17. Hospitalizations and new case counts are also showing downward trends.

There are 541 people currently hospitalized with the virus, including 146 patients in intensive care units and 78 who are intubated.

With COVID-19 health metrics improving and vaccinations ramping up, the state on Friday lifted its outdoor mask mandate in places where social distancing is possible. Masks are still required at all times in indoor public places, except for when eating or drinking, and at outdoor events when distancing is not possible.

In Massachusetts, very few people are contracting COVID after being vaccinated. On Friday, DPH said that as of April 27, there were 1,798 cases of residents testing positive after being fully vaccinated. That figure represents 0.1% of all fully vaccinated people in the state.

The number of COVID patients currently hospitalized on Tuesday is 516, down from 522 reported yesterday. Of them, 136 are in intensive care, and 85 are intubated, data shows.

There have been a total of 6,313,251 COVID vaccine doses administered in Massachusetts to date, and 2,661,078 residents are now fully vaccinated. Roughly 52% of the state have received at least one dose, and 38% are now fully vaccinated.

Massachusetts reports 795 new COVID cases, 8 more deaths

Massachusetts health officials reported 795 new cases of COVID-19 and eight more deaths Saturday as the state prepares to open up some of its mass vaccination sites for walk-up appointments.

Currently, there are 19,125 active cases of the virus in Massachusetts, according to the Department of Public Health. That figure dipped below 20,000 on Friday, the first time it had been that low since November.

Active case counts have been decreasing in recent weeks as more residents become vaccinated against the virus. As of Saturday, 2,884,727 residents are fully vaccinated and 3,782,087 have received at least one dose. The state has used 84.3% of its vaccine supply.

So far through the pandemic, at least 652,535 Massachusetts residents have tested positive for the coronavirus and 17,324 have died, according to DPH data.

Saturday’s new cases are based on 78,526 molecular tests. The seven-day average of positive tests is 1.32%, lower than 1.39% on Friday.

There are 441 people currently hospitalized with the virus, including 128 in the intensive care unit and 66 who are intubated.

As more residents become vaccinated, health metrics have been declining. The seven-day average number of deaths related to the virus has seen a big drop since April and hit a low of five on May 6. The seven-day average of confirmed cases has also been trending downward. Hospitalizations are heading in that direction as well, but with less steep of a decline.

On Monday, mass vaccination sites at the Hynes Convention Center, the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, the Double Tree in Danvers, the former Circuit City in Dartmouth, the Eastfield Mall in Springfield and the Natick Mall will open for walk-up vaccinations.

Over the last two weeks, 712 cases were confirmed in children younger than 4, down from 861 reported the week before. Officials reported 927 infections in children between the ages of 5 and 9, down from 1,055 since the last update. And 1,130 infections were confirmed in children between the ages of 10 and 14, which is down from the 1,263 reported on May 5, according to data released on Wednesday.

There were 1,450 teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 infected with COVID over the last 14 days, down from 1,753 since the last update.

And last week, officials confirmed another 2,159 cases among 20-somethings, down from the 2,969 reported during the last update.

The latest data comes a day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased indoor the mask-wearing requirement for people who are fully vaccinated. The new guidance will still require masks in crowded indoor settings, such as buses, planes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, but would ease up restrictions for offices and schools.

There are now only 6 communities at high risk for COVID spread — Acushnet, New Bedford, Taunton, Edgartown, Lawrence and Lowell, according to the latest Department of Public Health data. Last week, there were 13 communities still at the highest risk for spreading COVID-19, down from 26 the prior week.

Massachusetts reports 494 new COVID cases, 5 deaths on Sunday

Massachusetts public health officials on Sunday reported another 494 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths linked to the virus as the number of active cases continues to decline statewide.

The state Department of Public Health estimated there are currently 14,146 active COVID-19 infections, down from Saturday’s 14,396. Since the pandemic hit the U.S. last year, the state has seen at least 656,838 residents test positive and 17,394 die, according to DPH.

Sunday’s new totals are based on 44,094 molecular tests; a total of 22.3 million tests have been administered across the state since last year.

The seven-day average rate of positive tests is now at 1%, down from Saturday’s 1.03%. The rate has steadily declined in recent weeks; the state hit a low of 0.77% back in September.

As of Sunday, at least 3.2 million residents are fully vaccinated and 7.1 million have received at least one shot. Massachusetts has used 85.3% of its vaccine supply.

There are 337 people are hospitalized with COVID currently, including 94 in the intensive care unit and 55 who are intubated, according to DPH. On Saturday, 352 people were hospitalized.

Massachusetts is keeping its indoor mask mandate for now, despite new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventionallowing fully vaccinated people to shed their masks in most scenarios. A spokeswoman for Gov. Charlie Baker has said the state’s guidance will be updated in the “near future.” Other New England states, like Rhode Island, have updated guidelines following the CDC’s announcement.

Gov. Charlie Baker announced that, as the state is on track to meet its vaccination goal by early June, Massachusetts will lift all remaining “industry COVID restrictions and capacity limits” by May 29.

Additionally, Baker said the state’s pandemic-era state of emergency will lift on June 15. Baker said the state is nearing its goal of vaccinating 4.1 million residents by the first week of June.

“Effective May 29, the Commonwealth will lift all industry COVID restrictions and capacity limits,” Baker announced on Monday during a press conference at the Massachusetts State House.

The Department of Public Health on May 29 will also be issuing a new order to replace the state’s existing mask guidance with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s new guidance for vaccinated and unvaccinated people, Baker said.

“At that time, the (DPH) will issue a public health advisory urging all unvaccinated residents to wear face coverings in most indoor settings,” Baker said.

That public health order will also mandate the use of face coverings by everyone, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, in “a small number of specific places,” like nursing homes, health care settings, schools and public and private transportation systems, among other places, Baker said.

Massachusetts health officials on Saturday reported 405 new cases of COVID-19 and five more deaths as virus hospitalizations across the state have dropped below 300, data indicates.

Currently, 281 people are hospitalized with the virus, with 81 in the intensive care unit and 46 who are intubated. Hospitalizations were last at this level around October and were at their lowest in August with a seven-day average of 155, according to data from the state Department of Public Health.

There are 10,366 active cases of the coronavirus across Massachusetts, down from 10,939 on Friday. So far through the pandemic, the state has seen at least 659,246 residents test positive for the virus and 17,458 have died.

Saturday’s new cases are based on 49,584 new molecular tests. The seven-day average of positive tests stands at 0.99%, which is close to the low of 0.77% reached in September.

A total of 3,419,127 residents are fully vaccinated, DPH said, and 4,063,732 have received at least one dose. Massachusetts has used 84.7% of its vaccine supply.

COVID health metrics have been improving in Massachusetts for weeks and the state is days away from lifting pandemic-related restrictions. On May 29, all industries will be able to reopen without capacity or gathering limits. The state will also drop its mask mandate, though face coverings will still be mandatory for people riding public and private transportation, in healthcare facilities and in other settings with vulnerable populations, like congregate care settings.

As of this week, New Bedford and Lawrence are the only two communities that DPH has labeled as at high risk for COVID-19 spread.

Half of all Massachusetts residents now fully vaccinated against COVID as state reports 195 new cases, 10 more deaths


With half of the state’s population now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Massachusetts health officials on Tuesday reported 195 new virus infections and 10 more deaths.

There are currently 9,034 active virus cases in Massachusetts, down from 9,804 on Monday. So far through the pandemic, at least 659,916 residents have tested positive for the coronavirus and 17,475 have died.

As of Tuesday, there are 3,482,660 residents fully vaccinated in Massachusetts, according to DPH. This means that 49.57% of Massachusetts’ population is vaccinated.

A total of 4,099,188 residents, or 58.34% of the population, have received at least one dose of two-shot vaccines.

The seven-day average of positive tests stands at 0.93%, nearing the low of 0.77% reached in September.

There are 248 residents hospitalized with the virus, including 74 in intensive care and 40 who are intubated. The seven-day average of hospitalized patients reached its lowest at 155 in August. That number is currently 291, according to data.

Gov. Charlie Baker on Tuesday filed legislation proposing to allow restaurants to continue operating outdoor dining with special permits, billing protection for COVID patients and allowing public meetings to be held remotely. Massachusetts on May 29 will lift all its remaining COVID-19 restrictions, on track to vaccinate 4 million residents by early June.
