A day before COVID restrictions lift in Massachusetts, active cases drop to 7,314; hospitalizations to 241

Active COVID cases continued to decline in Massachusetts on Friday ahead of restrictions lifting over the weekend

Officials reported that there are now 7,314 active infections, down from 7,843 on Thursday, data shows.

State health officials also confirmed another 253 new COVID-19 cases on Friday.
Officials also reported 4 more COVID-related fatalities, bringing the death toll from the pandemic up to 17,495.

The seven-day average of positive tests is .74%, down from 0.8% reported the day before.

The number of COVID patients currently hospitalized on Friday is 241, down from 253 the day before. Of them, 74 are in intensive care, and 40 are intubated, data shows.

There have been a total of 7,748,396 COVID vaccine doses administered in Massachusetts to date, and 3,599,402 residents are now fully vaccinated. Roughly 59% of the state have received at least one dose, and 51% are now fully vaccinated.

As COVID activity continues to return to summer levels, the number of Massachusetts communities at high risk for COVID transmission now stands at one: Tisbury. During the peak of the second surge over the winter, more than 220 cities and towns were at the highest risk for spread.

Massachusetts reports 146 new COVID cases, 4 new deaths Sunday

As of Sunday, there are an estimated 6,702 active infections, nearly 200 fewer than the 6,892 on Saturday.

Officials reported 146 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths on Sunday. Since the pandemic hit the U.S. last year, Massachusetts has seen 661,115 residents contract the virus and 17,508 die.

The seven-day average rate of positive tests is now at .66%, down from Saturday’s .69% and Friday’s .74%.

State officials said 236 people are being treated at the hospital for COVID-19, the same as Saturday’s 236. Seventy-four are in intensive care, and 39 are intubated, according to DPH.

At least 7,828,350 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered across the state, according to DPH’s daily vaccine report. At least 3,653,148, or more than half the state’s population, are fully vaccinated.

This weekend is the first time businesses have been able to open without any pandemic-related restrictions since last spring, when Republican Gov. Charlie Baker issued a State of Emergency.

There are now 225 Massachusetts patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 236 reported over the weekend. That includes 77 in intensive care, and 38 who are currently intubated, data shows.

Massachusetts health officials reported 100 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. Officials also reported another 3 COVID-related fatalities, bringing the death toll from the pandemic up to 17,523.

The seven-day average rate of positive tests is now .69, up slightly from .68% reported the day before.

There are now 216 Massachusetts patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19, down from 225 reported the day before. That includes 76 in intensive care, and 37 who are currently intubated, data shows.

Active COVID cases continue to drop as Mass. reports 126 new infections, 4 deaths Sunday

The estimated number of active COVID-19 cases across Massachusetts declined again on Sunday as the state reported 126 new positive tests and four deaths.

As of Sunday, 4,335 are estimated to be infected by the virus. That figure is down from Saturday’s 4,486 and 4,735 on Friday.

Since the pandemic hit the U.S. last year, at least 662,154 have tested positive across Massachusetts and 17,548 have died.

The seven-day average rate of positive tests stands at .53%, down from Saturday’s .56% and lower than Friday’s .54%.

As of Sunday there are 178 COVID-19 patients in Massachusetts hospitals, including 64 in intensive care and 31 who are intubated.

At least 8,095,943 vaccine doses have been administered and 3,835,277 Massachusetts residents are fully vaccinated, according to DPH’s daily vaccination report.

The new low marks a 79% decrease in active cases from one month ago on May 7, when the number stood at 19,784 and a 96% decrease from the height of the pandemic on Jan. 18.

Massachusetts reports 33 new COVID cases, 0 new deaths Sunday

Active COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts continue to fall and nearly 4 million are fully vaccinated as public health officials on Sunday reported 33 new cases and no deaths.

As of Sunday, there are 2,695 active cases of the virus in the state, down from Saturday’s 2,792 and the nearly 3,000 reported on Friday.

Since the pandemic hit the U.S. last year — at least 662,811 Massachusetts residents have tested positive, according to the state Department of Public Health. The statewide death toll now stands at 17,576; more than 600,000 Americans have died across the country.

The latest data is based on 24,980 new molecular tests; nearly 23.4 million tests have been conducted since last year.

The seven-day average rate of positive tests is down to 0.42%, a new low down from 0.44% on Saturday and the 0.47% reported Friday.

According to the state’s daily vaccination report, 3,962,956 residents have been fully vaccinated; 8,271,500 doses have been administered overall. So far, the state has used 87.8% of its vaccine supply.

On Sunday, there were 133 people hospitalized with the virus, including 48 in intensive care and 27 who are intubated.

The seven-day average of positive tests remains at .42%, where it’s stood for several days.

There are now 124 Massachusetts patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19, down from the 138 reported the day before. That includes 43 in intensive care, and 26 who are currently intubated, data shows.

Earlier this week, Gov. Charlie Baker unveiled a new “VaxMillions” lottery to persuade more residents to get the shot. The Massachusetts Lottery will conduct weekly drawings between July 26 and Aug. 27, with five $1 million payouts to fully vaccinated residents over 18 years old and five $300,000 college scholarships to fully vaccinated children between 12 and 17.

There are just 1,510 active COVID cases in Massachusetts even as new vaccinations slow

Despite the threat of a rising COVID variant, the slide of infections in Massachusetts continued Friday with the state reporting a total of just 1,510 known active infections. That’s down 126 infections from Thursday.

There were 60 new cases reported and one more death from the virus that has claimed a confirmed total of 1,763 lives in Massachusetts to date. The total number of Massachusetts cases since the pandemic began is now at 663,538.

COVID hospitalizations, which peaked at around 4,000 in the spring of 2020 are now down to 99 and have been fluctuating around 100 for several days. There are 31 COVID patients in ICU and 11 intubated.

The seven-day average of positive tests dropped to .31%, down from .32% yesterday and is a new low.

There have been a total of 8,523,508 vaccine doses administered in Massachusetts to date, and 4137,582 residents are now fully vaccinated. New vaccinations have slowed considerably, however, with 6,241 more first doses administered since yesterday. Roughly 62% of the state has gotten at least one dose, and 59% is now fully vaccinated.

Massachusetts reported 79 new cases of COVID-19 Friday along with 1 more death.

New cases of the virus have remained relatively flat this week after months of decline. Hospitalizations have also remained relatively flat and have seesawed around 100 per day. Data shows hospitalizations dropped from 110 to 98 on Friday’s report.

Of those hospitalized, 28 are in intensive care and 10 are intubated.

The state has ceased reporting the number of estimated active cases, which stood at 1,348 on Wednesday.

Rising slightly again has been the seven-day average of positive new tests. It stood at .38% on Friday, rising from .37% the day before. It reached an all-time low of .29% earlier in the week.

One metric that has remained low is COVID deaths. Deaths from COVID dropped dramatically following the introduction of the COVID vaccines. A confirmed total of 17,634 Massachusetts residents have died since the start of the pandemic.

Vaccinations have slowed and the state stands at about 60% of the population fully vaccinated with 63% having at least one vaccine dose. There were 7,057 more people who reached full vaccination on Friday and 3,963 more who received at least one dose.

The state began registration for its VaxMillions lottery on Thursday, offering those who are fully vaccinated an opportunity to win one of five $1 million drawings or a college scholarship for those under 18.

The seven-day average of positive tests is now .47%, up slightly from .46% reported on Wednesday. It dipped to .29% last week, the lowest yet.

There are now 89 Massachusetts patients currently hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 85 reported yesterday. That includes 28 in intensive care, and 9 who are currently intubated, data shows. Hospitalizations had been hovering around 100 for a week, but had dipped further in the past week before rising again slightly.

No new COVID deaths, but 169 more cases as Mass. reports nearly 10,000 more vaccinations

Massachusetts health officials have reported 169 new cases of COVID-19and zero new deaths as vaccinations continue.

There were 9,952 more vaccinations reported Friday, down just a touch from Thursday. There are 4.3 million people now vaccinated, representing 61% of the state’s population, while 63% has at least one dose.

So far through the pandemic, Massachusetts has seen at least 664,575 residents test positive for the virus and 17,646 have died.

The seven-day average of positive tests stands at 0.50%, a bit higher than the low of 0.29% reached last week.

Currently, 87 people are hospitalized with the virus, down from 89 on Thursday. There are 25 patients in intensive care and 11 who are intubated.

Earlier Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance for the reopening of K-12 schools, which recommended that anyone who is not fully vaccinated wear masks in school buildings. Children younger than 12 are not yet able to become vaccinated.

In Massachusetts, mask restrictions are planned to be lifted for the 2021-2022 academic year.

“DESE will carefully review the new CDC guidance released today and consult with local medical experts to determine if any changes are necessary to the current school reopening guidance,” said Colleen Quinn, a spokeswoman for the Executive office of Education.

Data shows new COVID cases in Mass. rose 41% last week as delta variant continues to spread

Despite 61% of the population of Massachusetts being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, cases of the virus, spurred by the more contagious delta variant, are slowly rising again.

The state reported 191 new cases Tuesday as the seven-day average of new cases increased to 110 a day, compared to a low of 63.9 on June 25.

The rising trend has been happening for about two weeks.

Updated data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health released Tuesday shows new COVID cases last week grew 41% over the previous week, based on test date results reported to the state.

New COVID cases dropped precipitously after a spring peak in April and fell steadily through the week of June 20 as vaccinations against the virus swelled. There were 460 new COVID cases that week, data from the DPH shows. But the following week, cases climbed for the first time since April to 550, a 20% rise. Last week, those new cases grew to 778, a 41% rise over the previous week. That gap could increase as additional tests from last week are reported.

Yet, even as cases tick upward again, there are signs that the state’s strong vaccination numbers have kept more severe reactions to the virus in check. The state reported no new deaths Tuesday and daily deaths have been in the single digits for the past two months. Hospitalizations, which fell to a low of 80 on July 4, have inched upward, but are still relatively low at 96, the state reported Tuesday. Of those, 35 patients are in intensive care and 13 have been intubated.

The seven-day average of positive tests is at .62%, another number that has inched upward, but is still below last summer’s low.

There were 7,549 more vaccinations reported Tuesday, a slight rise over the previous day.

As recently as this month, Massachusetts hospitals were reporting the majority of new COVID cases were in unvaccinated individuals, yet an uptick in Provincetown this week has been attributed to cases amongst people who are already vaccinated, or “breakthrough” cases.

“We’ve been seeing several cases a day since the end of last week,” said Cape Cod Democratic State Sen. Julian Cyr.

Before this uptick, the last time Provincetown saw a positive COVID case was June 4.

“Provincetown has the highest vaccination rate in the state,” Cyr said, noting 114% of the eligible population is fully vaccinated.

Data from DPH shows the majority of new cases during the past two weeks were among those 20 to 29 years old. Those 30 to 39 were the second-highest group followed by those 50 to 59.
