Matt Lauer fired by NBC, accused of "inappropriate sexual behavior"

Stay tuned...this is just the beginning I'm sure. Many more to follow in all industries, not just news & entertainment.

“NBC News is in the process of removing all memory of Matt Lauer from 30 Rock, destroying anything that bears his name and likeness.

'Matt's office is being completely demolished. Everything is going, including that button under his desk, his name plate, the photos of him in the hallways, the pictures of him online and on NBC News social media,' an insider told the New York Post.

The button under Lauer's desk allowed him to lock his office door. The source adds the NBC News family is 'so sickened by his behavior it is almost like they want to pretend he never existed.

Meanwhile it has emerged that Willie Geist could be Lauer's replacement. Geist currently hosts the 'Sunday Today' program.

Not to be trite, but I never trust a guy who is prettier than me and Matt was “pretty” (at least on the outside)

I think it's gross they talked about this on the show. Is there really nothing better to talk about? And by "they" I mean anyone who thought this was a good idea for a segment...and I guess the viewers who agree to watch it.

It's also pretty unprofessional to go snooping around someone else's office.

In a recently unearthed video, Meredith Vieira calls out Matt Lauer for having a “huge bag of sex toys” in his office closet.

The clip is from a 2016 segment on “The Meredith Vieira Show” in which Lauer and “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie appeared. During the conversation, Vieira brings up a time where she was “snooping” in Lauer’s office and found a shopping bag of sex toys in his closet.

Seems to go along with what Keith Olbermann said is that NBC was an enabler for Lauer...

Yeah, it's her fault that he has crap like that in his office. Right.

He shouldn't have had it in his work office, but it is not her job to go inspecting people's offices to see if they have anything inappropriate in them. I would not want to work with anyone who "snoops" in the offices of their co-workers.

To be honest, I'm not sure I even believe her because it doesn't make a lot of sense for someone to go snooping around their co-workers offices.

Really hope they bring Willlie Geist back. I stopped watching a little while after Willie left. The Today show has changed so much, it's scatterbrained and non-funny, with little or no news at all, bad cooking segments, etc. Hated to stop watching after 40 yrs, but couldn't stand it anymore.

Bring Willie back and turn it back to a news show with segments on entertainment, weather, etc.

I'm puzzled by a couple of things about this case. I would be interested in hearing everyone else's take on the developments.

1. No doubt that Laurer's actions were despicable. NBC's response makes me wonder wonder if he didn't pick the wrong woman like someone very close to or family of one of the executives at NBC. Destroying his office & all pictures of him seems to be a bit of an overkill to me. For better or worse Lauer was a prominent part of NBC news for years. That can't be changed & history can't be destroyed. In reading this article it goes on to say that all of his co-workers will be closely questioned & dealt with harshly if they knew about his actions & did not report it. We do not see any other networks or organizations reacting so strongly to their former colleagues who have also been outed for sexual harassment.

2. How could his colleagues like Savannah Guthrie & Al Roker not have known what was going on? Perhaps they are just good actors, but they seemed extremely shocked & saddened when reporting the news of Laurer's firing. I worked for a large corporation for years in the days when women just had to deal with 'dirty ol' men' & trust me, word traveled fast as to who we women needed to watch out for.

Because Lauer's co-anchors weren't in his office or in his hotel rooms or looking at his phone when he was doing the various things he did, they wouldn't know about his inappropriate behaviors/harassment. Everyone knew he cheated on his wife and has throughout their marriage. That's no secret. It's not against company policy to cheat on a spouse. But the stuff Lauer did that got him fired was on a whole other level and he wasn't quite as 'open' about those activities. His hubris finally caught up with him and the dominoes started falling and quickly.

I believe the shock and big emotions from Guthrie, Roker, and anyone else who considers themselves a close friend is due to the behaviors they had just learned about--behaviors they didn't know Lauer was perpetuating on female underlings, and they couldn't make sense of the person who they thought they knew and the molester/harasser/sicko they were learning about. It's like when someone's neighbor gets arrested for some horrible crime. There's always the quote by a neighbor, "he was such a nice guy, always polite and friendly, waved hello, let me borrow his lawn mower when ours broke, I just can't believe he did x, y, or z."

People only know the facets of others they are allowed to see or allow themselves to see.

The intern who received sexually inappropriate pictures from Lauer in 2014 (absolute proof of his misconduct) didn't report his actions to anyone who could have done something about it, for 3 years. If a gal is sexually harassed, but never tells anyone, then how could anyone, even the harasser's coworkers, possibly know? It is in the telling or witnessing something that word gets out. And if one or more of Lauer's victims did tell management and management ignored it, then everyone in management who would have known should be terminated immediately.

He pinched Couric's butt and told Vieira she should keep bending over in front of him.

People knew.

Viera's husband went on the record saying Lauer and his wife had a very 'joking' type of relationship and the comment Lauer made to Viera, caught on a hot mike, did not bother either one of them and neither felt it was inappropriate, because of Lauer's & Viera's unique relationship, where they joke and goad each other. They all socialize together and I guess it was no big deal.

So, while Lauer is still a lech, his comment to his then co-anchor was not taken the way we all would, and I still maintain that no one could know what Lauer did behind closed doors, if Lauer's victims never said a word.

Someone who makes comments is not exactly the same as them sexually assaulting someone. You can't automatically make that leap without evidence or someone speaking up.

Definitely seems that NBC exec's knew something. If there was a celebrity roast on this guy and his lifestyle with the many women at that time how would the exec's not know he was holding up his part of that contract in showing to be a good husband. And I agree that a lot of his coworkers knew of his affairs but how could they know about the predatory behavior that was behind closed doors.

His children are also victims of his behavior.

Oh I agree that co-workers couldn't know what went on behind closed doors but you would think they would surely have been suspicious when he spent so much time in his locked office especially since he was known for his many affairs. I've been in work environments where 'hanky panky' was going on & it wasn't a big secret to co-workers even though we didn't actually see a sex act itself. As far as Couric & Viera's joking relationship with Lauer..............it's not even safe to have a joking relationship in the workplace these days lest someone gets the wrong idea.

I still think Lauer 'picked' the wrong woman who just happened to have the right connections to get him taken down. Otherwise, why on earth would NBC fire the goose that laid the golden egg?

I think the speed at which they canned him indicates that public is going to learn about sexual behaviors that freak most out (S&M cross dressing orgies dominance gay etc etc)

Obscure sexual behaviors that middle america will freak out over -- we will see

I agree. The decision was immediate once they say whatever it is they saw.

I hadn't thought of that, but something fishy is going on. I just feel it in my bones.
