True. And it's not as though people don't overdose on traditional antidepressant drugs too.

You can overdose on antidepressants the same as any medication, but how it affects you will depend on the type of antidepressant, quantity, and more.

Different drugs have different effects if too much is taken. And different people react differently to drugs. Per the above link, "In 2020, more than 5,500 U.S. deaths were associated with antidepressant overdoses." (Often in combination w/opioids/fentanyl)

Tricyclic overdoses are more likely to cause fatal arrhythmias. Wellbutrin is more likely to cause seizures while Trazodone may cause liver damage.

While it's definitely a shame about Perry, I'd hate to see any effective treatments for depression discarded based on high-profile cases. Not everybody responds to "talk" therapies.

I'd never experienced ketamine until a week ago, when I fractured my ankle and had to be sedated in the ER to have it reset until I could get in for surgery. I'm not a recreational drug user at all except for the very rare THC edible. Ketamine gave me the most peaceful feeling I've ever had, like there was no such thing as fear or sadness. That feeling even lasted for a day or so after. I can absolutely see how it could be groundbreaking for depression and anxiety, but like everything else, monitored closely by a physician.

A doctor charged with giving Matthew Perry ketamine in the month leading up to the “Friends” star’s overdose death will plead guilty, according to an agreement filed in court Monday.

Dr. Salvador Plasencia agreed to plead guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine, according to the signed document filed in federal court in Los Angeles. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to drop three additional counts of distribution of ketamine and two counts of falsifying records.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement that the plea carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. They said Plasencia is expected to formally plead guilty in the coming weeks.

Sounds great, and you weren't even depressed before taking it!

If you had the money, wouldn't you be tempted to take some more, since, as you say, it provides the most peaceful experience you've ever had?

It seems to me, being cured from depression doesn't mean you get to live in even a single moment of bliss, such as the drug induces. Kind of hard to give that up, and instead somehow harden yourself for the extremely non-blissful experience of living life.

Doctor pleads guilty to selling Matthew Perry ketamine in the weeks before the actor's death

A doctor pleaded guilty to giving Matthew Perry ketamine in the month leading up to the “Friends” star’s overdose death.

Dr. Salvador Plasencia became the fourth of the five people charged in connection with Perry’s death to plead guilty. He and a woman prosecutors say was a major ketamine dealer faced the most serious charges after Perry was found dead in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home on Oct. 28, 2023.

Plasencia stood next to his lawyer and said “guilty” four times for four different counts before Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett in federal court in Los Angeles.

Plasencia, 43, was to have gone on trial in August until the doctor agreed last month to plead guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine, according to the signed document filed in federal court in Los Angeles.

The charges can carry up to 40 years in prison. He is likely to be sentenced to much less, but there is no guarantee in his agreement.

Plasencia has been free on bond since shortly after his arrest in August, and will be allowed to remain free until his Dec. 3 sentencing.
