Missing Man May Have Been Dropped Off in Anne Arundel Co.

A Prince George's County, Maryland, man with dementia who has been missing from the Beltsville area for nearly a week amid freezing weather may have been picked up on Route 1 and dropped off in a town in Anne Arundel County, police say.

Daniel DeHaven -- a 65-year-old man who is nonverbal -- was last seen at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at a Costco store on the 10900 block of Baltimore Avenue in Beltsville.

Prince George's County police said on Sunday that a driver may have picked up DeHaven while he was walking on Route 1 and dropped him off in the 800 block of Annapolis Road in Gambrills. Police are telling people to lookout for DeHaven in that area.

DeHaven's family hopes he found someplace warm to rest and has been there.

This is local to me. The area where he was last seen is very commercial. I can’t imagine they don’t have some video surveillance. I wish I knew more about what leads them to believe he ended up in Gambrills. It’s 30-40 mins away and just seems an odd place to end up.

I'm not super local to the area but for some reason this case really stings...I hope Danny is somewhere warm and being taken care of. His family must be beside themselves.

If he is nonverbal, why would he have been dropped off where he was? Wouldn't someone have taken him to a police station or something? Was it a friend and that location was familiar?
I must be missing something.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense that a nonverbal man with dementia could indicate/ direct his way to where they think he may have been dropped off. It’s at least 15 miles from Rte 1/Costco to that area in Anne Arundel County.

There are a lot of local warming centers and shelters open right now due to the cold. I’m still holding out hope he ended up at one of them and they find him soon.

I drove around in that area today--not to look for Danny, but looking for him while I was there. It's warmed up some, compared to recent temperatures, but conditions are quite harsh. I'm very worried.

I know why the case gets to me. It's not far from where I live, and he's not that much older than I am. I like to think that serious possibilities of dementia are far in my future. This case reminds me it's not impossible that I'll be in this kind of danger in 10 years or fewer.

Maybe authorities have talked to the possible driver? Who might have made assumptions about where he was going or dropped him off there for other reasons? Good question, though. I didn't even think about how that came about.
