Maryland police charge suspect in 1989 homicide cold case

Police in Maryland have charged a suspect in relation to a 1989 homicide cold case using DNA technology.

The Prince George's County Police Department announced on Thursday that James Clinton Cole, 65, has been changed with first degree murder, rape, and several other charges after allegedly killing 27-year-old Cynthia Rodgers in 1989, according to a press release.

Cole is already serving a prison sentence after being convicted of raping a child in 1996.

James Clinton Cole took an Alford plea Wednesday, admitting that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him. He apologized in court but said he has no memory of what police described as a vicious attack.

Cole was arrested more than three years ago after DNA evidence linked him to the 1989 murder of 27-year-old Cynthia Rodgers in Forestville.''

''It took more than three decades to find it, but a solid DNA profile was finally discovered when a lab technician scraped the stick holding the original swab from the crime scene rape kit.''
