MD MD - Jonathan Luna, 38, Baltimore, 4 December 2003

Just checked. The moon set at 3:04 AM, so the are would have been dark, except for any lights from the earliest he arrived until around 6:08 AM, when nautical twilight began.

Here is a series on the case: Jonathan Luna Podcast - Season 3 of Somebody Somewhere

One glaring problem is that they accuse the FBI as suppressing the autopsy report. It is Lancaster County holding back the report.

If it is accurate JPL was in much greater professional problems that I initially believed.

Thank you for bringing this case to our attention-- I have never ever forgotten Jonathan Luna and the horrible way he died. I have never believed he killed himself. I think that is absurd. I will listen to this podcast and hope to learn new information. I tend to believe there is some kind of cover-up, and believe me, I am no conspiracy theorist!!!!

I do not believe that JPL committed suicide, but, as of now, I think the wounds were self inflicted. I do not believe he intended them to be fatal. I suspect that he was trying to stage an attack on himself, because it would give him an excuse to resign.

I think that had JPL resigned or been fired, he thought that future employers would think he had stolen cash that was evidence in a robbery trial. I don't think he did steal the money, but that does not change perceptions.

I appreciate your insights into this most unusual case. I just read a quick synopsis of the case to refresh my memory and note there was blood found at the scene- some of which was Luna's, but there may be someone else's blood: did they ever do DNA testing of blood found at the scene?

Luna did have a wife and children, who I suspect used the car. Further, at least according to what JPL told the judge on 12/3, he had taken his son to the hospital the day before. That could account for a different blood type.

If the autopsy is released, that will go a long way to either refute or confirm my scenario. However with the physical evidence we do know about, I think that there is enough to say that, at the end, at least, Luna was trying to live.

This is newscast from WBAL a bit before the 20th anniversary:

You can see some good shots of the "stream" at 0:55 and a bit better at 2:45.

Here is another blog and you can see the differences in what has been reported about the wounds: Jonathan Luna: Case Closed?

I do not agree with the conclusion.

I dont believe he committed suicide.
I would like to know more about this (head wound) If it was homicide, wouldnt you bring your own weapon of choice?
The erratic driving....withdrawing money...strange series of events.

The autopsy report will be key, but a head wound could have been caused by falling into the "stream," or even banging into the car door frame if JPL was unsteady from the loss of blood.

One thing that I considered was JPL might have wanted to visit a prostitute, perhaps as stress relief. That would explain him getting the money from the ATM. There were prostitutes at truck stops in PA around that time: State trooper indicted in prostitution sting I would also note that women in that profession have been known to engage in robbery

It would not explain why he felt a need to drive the route he did, why he didn't go to a larger city, i.e. stay in Baltimore or go to Philadelphia, why the money was left in the car, why the prostitute didn't bring her own weapon, and why a prostitute would proposition a man wearing ID that said he was a federal prosecutor. It also would not explain why, even in the early morning, nobody noticed a woman, presumably dressed like a prostitute, covered in blood, walking around Amish country!!!

Here is another one: CONSPIRACY: Jonathan Luna | Crime Junkie Podcast

The only things that are inaccurate was the repeated claim that the FBI was stopping the release of the autopsy report, that the FBI refused an inquest (that was the Coroner's Office again), and that JPL bought another vehicle a second tank of gas (that was ruled out) .

The PSP have also reviewed the case.

  • #335
This is a guess on my part, but I think they will say suicide or self inflicted. They have talked about a "new approach" and they have the PSP look at the evidence again.

Following ……awaiting the long over due autopsy report. I do find it fascinating that his family has never said much.

Coroner's pathologic diagnosis

The report includes the following conclusions by Dr. Wayne K. Ross that include:

  • Freshwater drowning
  • Multiple stab wounds/cuts to the neck, chest, upper and lower extremities
  • Blunt-force trauma to the face, neck, upper and lower extremities, external genitalia
In his opinion, Ross wrote: "After autopsy and review of the history, it is my opinion that the cause of death is freshwater drowning/multiple stab wounds to neck. The manner of death is homicide."

Okay. Here are some answers:

1. The nature of the wounds. Some stabbing wounds were defined as "pinpricks," by the first coroner; others have described them as "mutilation." Where were the bruises?

Most stab wounds were superficial. Slight bruising around mouth; tongue also bit.

2. Was there any sign of JPL being restrained? Bruising on his arms? Rope burns? Slight tears on his sleeves or impressions left in the fabric?

Only bruising on one wrist, associated with stab wound. JPL was wearing one glove.

3. Toxicology. Was he drugged? Was there any kind of chemical impairment?

Unknown

4. Stomach content. Did JPL eat at some point after he left Baltimore or perhaps get something to drink?

Some fluid in the stomach but no recent meal.

5. Was there evidence of JPL being dressed after stabbing?

Evidence that JPL was stabbed while fully dressed.

  • #339
The one glove is puzzling. Just can’t see him doing all this to himself. There’s a lot of blunt force trauma.

  • #340
Blunt force trama to face...
Liquid content in stomach is caffeine and acetone..
Genital trauma...
Hmmm...confusing for sure
