Good job, Tracy! I suspected as much. I think I will write to WJZ and WBAL about this case and see if they want to pick up the story. Those are our local news stations. May I have your permission to copy your code references in my emails?

Yep! Please use anything I've posted that you think would be useful. :)

So young and apparently already know to cover their misdeeds? Were there any adults in the house? In this particular case it would have made no difference regarding missing persons timeframe, because she was apparently already dead before ever being reported missing.

The same thing happened with Amber Dubois. She disappeared on her way to school and they assumed she was a run-away even though she was getting her lamb that day and was super excited. I realize she was a teenager, but I think the cops need to go more with the gut feeling of a parent. A parent has a pretty good idea if their child has run-away or not. Precious time is being lost due to bureaucracy.

I don't care if the child is a runaway. A child needs help and protection. My daughter ran away at 15. That didn't make it any less of a desperate situation. There are predators that thrive on runaway children. They should be treated like any missing child. They are in as much danger, if not more.

Exactly! There is no excuse for not looking for any missing child, no matter why they think the child is missing. ITA about the predators who prey on runaways. I am terribly angry over this. How could the police tell this family to wait 24 hours? Disgusting.

My heart goes out to Monae's family and friends.

So avoidable! When will adults become responsible for properly securing their firearms? Just breaks your heart. Rest in Peace Monae.

I called non emergency line when my daughter was an hour late coming home from a concert and couldn't contact her by her cellphone. An officer was at our home within 20 minutes, but luckily within that time I was able to speak with her. The officer was extremely happy to hear the news and didn't fault me for calling so soon. This was 10 years ago already, but I don't think that asking parents to wait is the standard response in Maryland now.

Boys sentenced in 13-year-old's shooting death
Monae Turnage's family: Sentences weren't enough

In a packed courtroom, the judge reportedly referred to the boys as "good people" who did an unfortunate thing when he agreed to prosecutors' sentencing recommendations. The 13-year-old, who admitted to firing the shot that killed Monae, will be placed in a treatment facility, while the younger boy who said he helped moved the body will be court monitored while living with a relative.

Both sentences are for an indefinite period of time for a maximum of three years.
