'Multiple' deaths, suspect caught after reports of shots fired outside Maryland newspaper office, sheriff says

A suspect was apprehended following reports of shots fired and multiple fatalities in Annapolis, Maryland, Thursday afternoon outside the Capital Gazette newsroom, Anne Arundel Sheriff Ron Bateman told Fox News.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore said they are responding to the incident.

Police were also at The Baltimore Sun newsroom in Baltimore. Police said there was no threat on the Sun, and that their presence was a precaution.

A Twitter user said that police have people coming out of a building [on] Bestgate Road with their hands up. Another user posted that a suspect was in custody in the Capital-Gazette office and triage of shooting victims is ongoing.

Annapolis Police Lt. Timothy Seipp said there had been an "active shooter” at the building and that a subject is in custody.

The Baltimore Sun, which owns the newspaper, says in a posting appearing on the Capital-Gazette website that Phil Davis, a Gazette reporter, says that "multiple people had been shot."

• The shooting began around 2:35 pm at the Capital Gazette building, Fox 5 reported.
• Phil Davis, a Gazette reporter, tweeted, “A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead.” He added, “Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad.”
• There have been multiple fatalities, Anne Arundel Sheriff Ron Bateman told Fox News.
• An individual is in custody, the sheriff said.
