I was giving my opinion. I did not say she said those exact words. But since you brought it up, here is exactly what she said in the short video linked above:

I just do not hear the mayor saying give them room to destroy, which is the insinutation many others are making. You cannot pick and choose phrases. The whole statement needs to be considered. MOO.
I think lots of people are misinterpreting this. She is saying that by giving them space to protest and protecting them from cars and such during the protesting that also gave them room to destroy. She is admitting fault. They were trying to give protesters room to protest peacefully, but unfortunately that backfired and resulted in them being able to destroy.

She said what she said. It's on video. If she was trying to say something else, she failed to get her message across.

I can not with some of these commentators trying to say that her remarks were taken out of context....

During her press conference Saturday, Rawlings-Blake said that she worked with police to make sure they protected the protestors' right to free speech, “ It’s a very delicate balancing act because while we try to make sure that they (protestors) were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well,” Rawlings-Blake said.

I saw it too, though it did look like an isolated incident by one person in the midst of what I imagine was a very frustrating and infuriating moment.

It was a very human reaction I suppose ,but being as the BCP has been beating people and aresting them and outright lieing on the stand in courts ,for so long they get no benefit of doubt from me. The corruption and the tactics used ,not to ensure justice but to line officers pockets and hide evidence of their own crimes . Releasing name of witnesses getting people murdered for money ,breaking in their own evidence lockers and stealing ****. This looting will cost the city much less then the officers themselves have cost the families of Baltimore. Also I have not heard of one death since it started so I say while it might appear more violent on the surface it might lead to less lives lost in the future. This has went on for years. decades even. That homicde detective (williams ) talking about how he was scared last night, I guess he was he knews good and well what these people are mad and why they are burning Baltimore. Why wont he say it?

I can see that she was stating that in giving them space to protest she was also giving them room to destroy. But she clearly erred on the wrong side of this balance entirely.

I think the whole First Amendment thing doesn't give you the right to march down freakn streets and disrupt traffic and other people's lives just so you can be seen. There is no surer way to get me pissed off at your cause du jour than to disrupt my life so I have to hear you. I dont care what you are marching for just get out of the damn road so I can get home. Its a ROAD, not a stage. Get a permit if that's what you are going to do, but nope they rarely do.

Actually the First Amendment does give people that right. It's very clear. Just because other people's rights are an inconvenience to you, doesn't give you the right to deprive them of their rights.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

I don't buy that. Media can most certainly set higher standards for themselves.

Sure, they can set all the standards you'd like but if viewers turn away they lose advertising money.

One reason viewers might turn away is the sight of blood, one reason you don't see it often. People will change the channel.

Cars burning, buildings burning. Didn't seem very peaceful to me.

That being said, I completely disagree with the way the mayor has handled this. I just think this is a little thing to keep harping on. Ultimately this is not the mayor's fault. There was going to be violence and destruction last night, there is no hypothetical response that could have prevented it. So let's put the focus back on these criminals instead of a mayor who admits she misspoke and did not mean her words the way they were interpreted.

We must come together,we can stop the violence as a #community. These kids have to have real leaders,we need everybody to join this #movement

Thank you popsicle! Beautiful!! I love this!! This is what we need to see front and centre. I know the media everywhere focuses on sensationalism as it brings them higher ratings. I just phoned my cable company and they are removing two news stations at my request which only show negative and sensational news. We can make a difference! There is a strong and positive advocacy for safety and calm in Baltimore - let's see more of what is truly happening there that will make a difference to the citizens who live there!

Way to go! Instead of shaking your finger at the media or at viewers, you took action. Might seem like a little gesture, but it's not. Congrats, way to be a leader.

I am still loving that video of that mom who catches her kid out there and put hands on him. I don't believe in beating your kids, but guaranteed if I caught my child participating in something like this I would probably whip their butt all the way home. And they would lose every priveledge. No phone, no computer, no door on their room, no cool clothes, just sweatpants and sneakers from Walmart.

Watching the feeds last night I noticed one man who had a bald spot and was still sagging his pants. I don't think sagging pants are indicative of any race, all my white guy friends use to do this, so this is not aimed at any group. But I told my husband when you have a bald spot it's time to pull your pants up.

Also, the one guy talking to Leland from fox, who got hit by the bean bags, he said "we were throwing" then goes "they were throwing" and when Leland said were they throwing bottles? And he said "yeah bottles or these" and he had two of the object they were throwing at cops! How stupid can you be to tell on yourself? I mean, my two year old will draw on the wall and then pull me over going "uh oh" but she is two!

The only thing I saw that will make a difference is that mother swatting her son all the way home. THAT, in my opinion, is the only thing that will make a difference. When parents control their children, and themselves, and when "officials" do what needs to be done, maybe there will be peace and harmony.

This blaming someone else for all their troubles doesn't cut it. We all know that, let's quit pretending, then maybe we can get somewhere, live together in peace, harmony and understanding. Until then, it's the "downtrodden" whining and crying that all their troubles are someone else's fault. Go to school and learn, get a damned job. Move, if you can't find one, you won't be any worse off, you can take your get out of jail free/food/housing card/O phone with you. Quit whining and do something POSITIVE.

That black mother, who took control of her child should be the mayor. I really mean that. I think she speaks for all of us with good will.

Another thought here...

They closed the schools today. IMHO really dumb move.
Isn't one reason people are so upset is because there are no jobs or the people of poverty do not have the skills needed for the jobs out there?
Isn't one solution to that - education?

So close the schools?

What am I missing here?

Here is ACs response to those criticizing the media:

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/anderson...-council-president-for-criticizing-the-media/

And I would like to add to his points that I personally want to know where the danger is in my city. And yes, I care about danger way more than I care about peaceful protests.

Shame on me.

Oh for Pete's sake, it's not one extreme or another. There is nothing wrong about covering the incidents. That's not why the media is criticized.

You know what is strange? I don't recall hearing any burglar alarms going off when the stores were broken into.
