Police say Wednesday morning's chaos spilled from the block party aftermath to the hospital itself.

"There were hundreds of people at the hospital," said Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis. "We then had to move our resources from the crime scene to the hospital where Salisbury City Police officers had to deploy pepper spray because the crowd of gotten so large at TidalHealth this morning. It was mayhem."

“Authorities said it began as a July Fourth block party that grew to a crowd estimated at between 300 and 400 people.

investigators said they believe there were at least two shooters who brought at least two weapons.

The sheriff said search warrants are being written up Wednesday afternoon, as they have identified suspects. Because of that, the sheriff said law enforcement is keeping any more information close to the vest.”

Xavier Cordaei Maddox died at the hospital. Sheriff Lewis says 6 others were also struck by gunfire, in the neck, back, foot, and thigh. A case they believe they know the motivation behind

“We do believe that this is gang related we know for a fact there were gang members involved. We are looking at a number of suspects at this time.” the Sheriff said.

And while he urges the public to remain vigilant, he does believe the suspects knew who there were looking for.

“A gunman who is using a gun illegally I think is a threat to the community, however we do believe that these individuals were targeted we don’t believe this was a random shooting so we don’t believe there is anyone out there randomly shooting people,” the Sheriff said.
