JMO... She could have just started experiencing something they call post-partum blues or on the more serious end, post-partum depression. Very common.

If it was suicide they would have found a gun by her side. That was never mentioned. It seems like something with work. Someone was after her for some reason. She couldn't discuss it if it was a work related issue.

Leads on Del Rio mom's murder in Maryland

The lead investigator told News 4 San Antonio that they do have "persons of interest" in the case, including her husband.

Maliek Kearney was stationed in another state the night of the murder.

Karlyn's roommate was out-of-town the night of the murder.

Just found this, but it's old. Female roommate also in army; both husband and roommate believed to be out of state, Since married, why the roommate? Why did neither she nor her husband mention being married on their FB pages?

i missed the crimewatch but find statement "i dont feel safe" important. was she being stalked? was she afraid of her husband? if she didnt feel safe would she allow a stranger into her home?

Dont think a stranger, she was killed in her upstairs bedroom next to her baby. someone who had a key got into that apt

Thoughts about work (most of this comes from the Crimewatch article linked above):
1) She worked in intelligence, stationed at Fort Meade, with top secret clearance at the NSA.
2) Among the civilian employees working at NSA in Fort Meade are a remarkable number of autistic savants, including some children. Their social and communication skills are usually poorly developed (and sometimes overall cognitive ability), but they are phenomenal at cryptology.
3) In addition to the employees on the spectrum, NSA hires a number of other civilians who are brilliant but...well...just weird. (I have this info from someone currently working there)
4) So...working in intelligence at Fort Meade, may have provided Karlyn with some interesting colleagues -- perhaps someone made her uncomfortable.
5) Another thought would be the work she was actually doing...
6) And another thought would be her roommate who was also in the Army stationed at Fort Meade -- her close friend Marissa, who had a little girl...did that lady have an acquaintance or boyfriend that was making Karlyn uncomfortable?
8) And...of course...there's the husband. Also with the Army, but NOT stationed at Fort Meade (he was stationed in South Carolina). There's a mystery there. She had the baby, then they got married, they were married 5 weeks before the murder, but they kept the marriage almost a secret... didn't live together (that may have been due to different postings in the Army). Why all the secrecy??

Everyone I knew in the Army stationed at Ft. Meade was working indirectly for the NSA. Plenty of weirdos among them but ime uncomfortableness was more often tied to sexism or sexual harassment, and I didn't think anyone in Intelligence was weirder or scarier than anywhere else. (Less scary, imo.)

That's not to say she didn't have a stalker or something but that happens everywhere in every field.

There's something so off about this and I really don't like the way it seems everyone just shrugged and moved on. It's been almost a year and still nothing.

My main source is someone who works there. As far as recruiting children, NSA has a program called "GenCyber" where they groom and recruit children (this sounds like some sort of crazy movie, but sometimes reality is stranger than fiction). Here's info on a camp being held in my town this month (funded by our government) for children in 8th to 12th grades https://www.rit.edu/gccis/computingsecurity/gencyber and here is what they offer:

students will work collaboratively and learn how to deal with cyber threats through a variety of hands-on, "scary fun" activities including password hacking, live malware handling, and smartphone protection. The workshop will also introduce diverse careers in cybersecurity available for students with different interests and backgrounds.

getting back on topic -- I noticed in the comments in one of the articles someone drawing some parallels between Karlyn Ramirez and Kanika Powell, who was murdered 10 miles away a few years back, and her murder has never been solved. Like Karlyn, she had served in the Army in S. Korea, and then recruited for intelligence work - some top secret govt position at Johns Hopkins applied chemistry dept. She'd had some alarming episodes in the days preceding her murder - men coming to her apt. claiming to be FBI (she didn't open the door, said their badge looked bogus) and later claiming to be delivering a package (once again she didn't open the door). She was definitely spooked and even sent an email to her Mom and others about it (that reminded me of Karlyn's frantic phone calls to her Mom and sister hours before her murder, except she didn't give specifics of what it was that was scaring her). Kanika was shot when she was returning home to her apartment.

Kanika's murder was described as a "planned hit" and Karlyn's murder was described to her mother as a "professional hit."

No, not just Aspergers, not necessarily high functioning. There are individuals with autism who are severely disabled -- can't feed themselves, can't speak, can't dress themselves, etc. - but who are amazingly gifted in some specific areas. A "triad" of blindness, autism/cognitive disability, and amazing musical ability has been noted. By amazing musical ability -- these are people who can't speak but maybe a few words, but can sing a song from beginning to end after hearing it only once or twice. Or they can sit down at the piano (without any lessons) and play a concerto after only hearing it once. So...there's something about the memory in some individuals on the spectrum, and also something about music that makes their brains click. I know a number of parents (in my circle of autism support group) whose children can't really functionally communicate, but can recite all the lines in a movie. This isn't the case with everyone with autism (it isn't with my son), but it's fairly common for those with autism to have amazing ability to memorize stuff (if it's in their interest range). The ability to memorize and do higher mathematics is also a fairly common skill with individuals on the spectrum even when they're barely functional in other areas.

This is the cool side of autism -- why some people say it isn't a disability, but a gift. But there's a darker side - the violent side. A lot of our children harm themselves and also harm others. My son has been quite violent to us and to himself, mainly because he lost his speech, and was frustrated that he couldn't communicate (and he was in incredible pain but we weren't aware), but with lots of therapy and lots of prayer, he is much better now. One of my friends had to have her son put into a residential home because he would have meltdowns and become violent, and as he grew into a teenager, he was bigger than her and could overcome her. I've seen some pretty horrible meltdowns at my son's school.

I could envision a colleague with Aspergers/high-functioning Autism maybe developing a crush or something on Karlyn and not being able to effectively communicate with her, or understand if he were being kindly rebuffed, and perhaps stalking her. But Karlyn was highly trained and competed in martial arts -- I think she could defend herself. So...I don't think my theory on that angle holds much water.

It does seem like whoever killed her knew her and knew what was going on in her life. They chose a time when her roommate was out of town. There was no signs of forced entry. She either let them into her house, or they had a key, or they were experts at lock-picking (a skill many employees at NSA would have). How a stranger would get by her dogs is interesting. That she was killed on the 2nd floor is also interesting - as if a more intimate guest, or someone snuck in while she was sleeping.

I looked up the travel time from Fort Jackson (Columbia, SC) to Severn, MD. It's about 7 1/2 hrs one way (without traffic, and there wouldn't have been much at night). So, if Maliek's girlfriend picked him up at the end of his shift (Aug. 24 was a Monday, so assuming he'd have been working), and they could have driven straight through to Maryland. He'd have probably had the key to her apartment, so he could have let himself in while she was sleeping upstairs, the dogs would have recognized him and not barked, and he could have slipped upstairs, killed Karlyn, purposefully left the sliding glass door open to alert neighbors (so the baby would be found), and then they'd have driven straight back to SC. If Delgado did most of the driving, Kearney could have slept, and reported right to his next shift.

Probably thought they had the perfect alibi...4 states away, Kearney probably didn't miss any work. Only thing, that drive (roundtrip) is over 1000 miles, so they'd have had to have stopped at least once to get gas. And...there would be security cameras...and maybe credit card charge for the gas...so some good detective work could have uncovered the alibi.

Actually, after Karlyn was murdered, her family took custody of the child. They live in Texas. Maliek got transferred to Texas so he could spend more time with the baby. Her family say that he was great with the baby. However, they must have had their suspicions -- but didn't voice them publicly, perhaps out of fear that he would demand custody of the child.

The whole marriage thing was weird. They got married only 5 weeks before the murder, when the baby was several months old. IMO, the marriage was to save Maliek's career -- he was an officer and she was enlisted, which was against Army fraternization laws. But oddly, it seemed a secret wedding. In the photos (that he finally posted on FB, after the murder) the only people who appeared to be in attendance were Karlyn and Maliek and the baby and his teen daughter. Neither of them posted any wedding photos at the time of the wedding, even though Karlyn regularly posted tons of other photos of the baby on FB right up until a day or two before she was killed. He was not her FB friend at the time of the murder, although he was at the time of the baby's birth, which hints at some trouble in the relationship. They didn't live together -- either before or after the wedding -- that, of course, was because of being at two different bases. But he had this Dolores Delgado girlfriend on the side -- either at the time of the wedding, or immediately afterward. Did Karlyn know about her, or find out?

And what was the motive for the murder? Was Karlyn demanding child support? Did Maliek want her out of the picture to marry Dolores (but if he divorced her so quickly after marriage, that would have been frowned upon by his superiors?) Was Dolores the one who pushed, out of jealousy? She certainly helped with the murder
