Baltimore Police Look To Media To Find Missing Teen
February 21, 2011
Police in Baltimore are pleading for help to find a 17-year-old who vanished from her family's apartment Dec. 28. Foul play is suspected but there are no leads, and detectives and family members hope media coverage of Phylicia Simone Barnes' case will help them find her.
<snip>
"We've suspected foul play from almost the beginning," says Anthony Gugliemi, spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department.

There's no forensics, there's no blood spatter, there's nothing to indicate that she was harmed in the apartment. ... Phylicia's trail goes cold at the front door.

The front door to the apartment unit or the front door to the building? OR was this an analogy that he was using meaning front door to the police department?
Something has to break in this case soon. Someone knows where Phylicia is and that someone needs to be pressured to fess up and fess up NOW!
Phylicia where are you? Help us find you! Help us bring justice to whoever is responsible for disappearing you!
(ETA: So much for my above post - open my mouth and there is another msm article shortly. I'm sure that was just coincidence....... )
I heard the NPR piece in the car this afternoon in Massachusetts, and the bit you mentioned that I highlighted in red jumped out at me too--I thought her scent ended in the parking lot, not at the front door. Maybe the officer was just using "at the front door" very casually to mean "at the complex/in the lot", but ??? maybe not. I tend to assume that the language in pressers is more deliberate than that in media-generated pieces, so perhaps this was really just the spokesperson speaking to a reporter without a great deal of prep.
My understanding is that her scent ended on the sidewalk in front of the apartment. A recent MSM video report had a reporter stopping at the bottom of the exterior steps, on the sidewalk, between the door and the curb, and she said the scent stopped "right here."
That kind of doesn't make sense either...wouldn't she have been in the parking lot or further away from the door than that, a day or so earlier, in any case? We keep hearing that scents can last a while and while dogs are supposed to pick up the most recent, you'd think there would be a scent if she had walked from the car to the building the night before, for example. Or I am mixed up and the parking lot is located elsewhere...
Ok, I get it now. If the Barnes family is papering the N. Bend Rd./Frederick Ave. (as stated on findphylicia.com) then essentially they're saying that they think MJ & family are responsible.
I see what georgiajean saw too, specifically that there is evidence on casesearch.courts.state.md.us and mdlandrec.net that shows that the J family roots go back a long time in that neighborhood - several decades at least.
That said, we're talking about just a few individuals - a narrow pool. If LE is saying there are no leads, I think we should consider the possibility of a stranger abduction. I wish we knew more about the slipper boots. Is it possible that she left the apartment wearing the boots - even if they were impractical - because the boots were really cute? (Remember, she was just 16 years old.)
Georgiajean - are you certain DB's apartment building was the second or third on the left hand side from the entrance off of Patterson Ave? (I believe that's what shown on the map you posted previously.)
I'm wondering IF PB left the apartment, where would she go?
Possible destinations (these are total guesses on my part, of course):
1. It looks like you could pretty much see the Wendy's from the front of the apartment building, so that would be my first guess. It looks like there are several other fast food options at the mall on the side facing Reisterstown Road.

2. Sally Beauty Supply - we know PB was planning on getting her hair done that afternoon. Do we know if she was going to go to a salon or to someone who does hair on the side? If she was going to someone who does hair on the side, would have needed to bring supplies? The mall's website says there is a Sally Beauty Supply at no. 64 on the mall map.
Where I don't think she went:
Metro Subway station. I'm figuring that they have surveillance cameras and that LE has checked them all.
Where else?
I'm confused about the money situation... I know it's been reported that the emergency credit card her mother gave her was still in the apartment. But also, in numerous articles it's been stated that her debit card/ATM card hasn't been accessed. So is it possible that we're talking about two different cards? One card (mom's emergency card) she left in the apartment and one (her personal ATM/debit card) she took with her?
I'm wondering if she did in fact have her debit card with her, and that's how she was planning on paying for lunch/hair supplies/whatever...
Good point. I just heard she had cash and the emergency card. And that she had her purse, but not her money/card. I don't know if her wallet was left behind, or what.
The thing is, I just cannot understand why she would leave on her own when she knew DB was close to getting off work and would be coming to get her soon.
She was a smart girl. I do not see her going alone for a walk when she didn't need to.
And would this make MJ's play by play of her actions correct or incorrect? Did she really go back to sleep and then just get up and go alone out for a stroll?
Thank you for posting this. Good, good point. The timing is what makes it suspicious, exactly.
KB set to arrive at 1:30.
PB out of communication at 12:30,
MJ says he leaves house at 1:30, PB there asleep....
The timing is too tidy, too close.
So much hinges on why KB did not show up.
Okay, back to my sleuthing then...
And most important---why did PB stop communicating after she 'woke up' from the alleged nap?
I mean, if we ignore MJ and his actions and the things he said about what PB was doing, then I could make a case for PB leaving. Maybe. But I still would wonder why she didn't wait for her sis, and why she didn't at least text her and say pick me up at 'this' cafe. It makes no sense that she would just go on her own out of the apt. without letting KB know.
But if you add in MJ's comments, that she showered, dressed, was on FB, then she is back asleep---then it makes NO SENSE that she would wake up and go out alone to eat, and NOT communicate with one of her sisters.
So I have to see MJ as lying if I want to accept that she went out on her own.
