A professional cornhole player who's also a quadruple amputee is facing murder charges after a deadly shooting in Charles County, Maryland, over the weekend.

Dayton James Webber, 27, was behind the wheel of a car in La Plata when he shot and killed the front-seat passenger during an argument Sunday night, witnesses told authorities.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office confirmed to News4 the suspect is professional cornhole player Dayton Webber, who's gathered acclaim while winning tournaments as a quadruple amuptee. In 2023, he wrote an essay for NBC's TODAY, sharing what it took to go from an amateur to professional competitor.

Webber, of La Plata, is now in custody in Virginia as he awaits extradition.

Late Sunday night, back-seat passengers from Webber's car told authorities that Webber shot and killed his front-seat passenger during an argument.

They say Webber then pulled over in the area of Radio Station Road and Llano Drive, where he asked them to help pull the victim out of the car. The other passengers refused and got out of the car.

Webber then fled with the victim still in the car, according to the sheriff's office.

I hazard a guess that he's first quadruple amputee to have committed murder as well. Well accused at any rate.

While driving a car at the same time!

I mean, it’s quite impressive to drive and fire a shot at someone next to you, period. But as a quadruple amputee on top of all that. He clearly has an incredible dexterity.

In a statement posted to social media on Monday, the ACL said it was aware of the allegations against Webber. “We respect the judicial process and will not comment on specific allegations or details while proceedings are ongoing.

“We will provide updates if and when it is appropriate to do so, but in the meantime the league will have no further comment.”

Two people who purportedly saw the killing waved down police officers on patrol in that area and reported what had happened, setting off a search for Webber.

A couple of hours later, a resident of nearby Charlotte Hall, Maryland, called investigators to report a body in a yard.

Investigators determined the body was that of Wells, and the Charles county sheriff’s office said its deputies obtained a warrant to arrest Webber.

Authorities said they found Webber’s car in Charlottesville, Virginia, about 150 miles from where Wells’ body had been recovered. They reportedly tracked Webber down to a nearby hospital, where he had allegedly sought treatment for an unspecified medical issue.

The Albemarle county police department, whose jurisdiction includes the hospital, arrested Webber as a fugitive upon his discharge. Charles county sheriff’s deputies said they planned to book Webber on charges of murder, assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony after he is transferred to their custody.

A statement of charges filed in court and reported by WTTG said Webber knew his passengers from work. It accused Webber of having shot Wells twice in the head.
