National Guard member and Air Force veteran missing after Ellicott City flooding

A man some are identifying as a National Guard member and Air Force veteran is missing after he was reportedly swept away while trying to rescue people during the Ellicott City flooding Sunday.

Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman confirmed Monday that the search is on for Eddison Hermond. According to a Facebook post by Bonnie Hoppa, who says she is a friend of Hermond's friends, he was "swept away" at around 4:20 p.m. in the area of Tiber River IVO Parking Lot D.

Hoppa describes Hermond as standing about 6' tall with an athletic build and says he was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts.

EC FLOOD MISSING PERSON: Howard County police are continuing the search for a man who was reported missing in Ellicott City during the flood Sunday night.

Eddison Alexander Hermond, 39, of Severn, was last seen in the area of La Palapa near Lot D on Main Street at approximately 5:20 p.m. He was reported missing to police at 12:30 a.m. on Monday. He has not been located despite ongoing searches of the area. Officials have confirmed that the attached photo circulating on social media is Hermond.

Hermond is described as a black male, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds. He is an active member of the Army National Guard.

Anybody with information should call 911.

Nat'l Guardsman missing after catastrophic Md. flash flood

A woman wanted to leave the restaurant to find her cat, and Lopez said Hermond lost his balance as he attempted to help the woman out. He fell into a river behind the Mexican restaurant and was swept away by the raging waters around 5:20 p.m. local time.

Search underway for missing guardsman after Maryland flood

Kate Bowman, owner of a local café, said Hermond was trying to help her when he disappeared into the flood waters.

With water at waist level, Bowman, 41, said she grabbed her cat and escaped from the window of her flooded shop.

"I could barely see anything and I could barely hear anything" because the waters were so loud, Bowman told The Baltimore Sun. "He stepped over the ledge to try to get to me, and he was washed away."
