His sister in law, Katie Card told various reporters/outlets this information.

'I have known Rob my whole life,' she told the Daily Beast on Thursday.

'He is quiet but the most loving, hardworking, and kind person that I know. But in the past year, he had an acute episode of mental health, and it's been a struggle.'

She added that Card told his family that he could hear voices criticizing him while he was in the bar and bowling alley.

'He truly believed he was hearing people say things,' she added. 'This all just happened within the last few months.'
I thought you meant he knew the victims he shot.

There's nothing in this link that says anything like that.

I'm confused.

The Maine Department of Public Safety says it will hold another briefing at 5 p.m. ET.

Officials said earlier today that they are committed to briefing reporters every day at 10 a.m. ET, and may choose to hold an afternoon briefing if news merits.
I just want to say how relieved I am to see LE wearing helmets in their response to the shooter. I've watched several of these mass shooter situations while yelling at my screen to "put on a helmet and bulletproof vest!!"

Joseph Walker’s daughter Bethany said she has worked at the restaurant as a bartender for years and knew of Card from different leagues and tournaments he was involved in.

Thanks.

I don't think "know" is the equivalent of "know of."

"Know" to me implies personal interaction while "know of" doesn't.

As in, for example

I know my husband, but I don't know his cousins since I've never met any of them, but l do know of them.

If I have a family member showing signs of mental instability, I'll alert LE to seize his guns so he can't hurt himself or anyone else. It's the entire point of red flag laws.

Maine doesn't have red flag laws.

I don’t think that’s how red flag laws work.

Just jumping off your post, but wasn't he put in a mental hospital in NY for threats to shoot up the base in Saco Maine? Was he in NY when he made those threats and does NY have a red flag law?

Whats strange is that his army supervisor is the one who wanted him to be admitted to the mental health facility. If that has been confirmed why would he think RC would be ok in 2 weeks?

I haven’t read everything so I don’t know what has been confirmed so far but knowing RC had access to guns and was a trained firearms specialist should have been a red flag to his supervisor.

Yes, NY has a Red Flag law.

And I'm glad I don't live there. Protecting the safety of loved ones has to be a priority.

Respectfully this could happen in any state.

It certainly happened in Highland Park Il. A son of a defeated mayoral candidate launched a horrific attack on the families attending a July 4th parade. He was dressed as a woman and took aim from a roof top, slaughtering innocent civilians. Thanks to the laws of the state of Illinois, the father is being prosecuted. Sorry you don't agree.

I don’t think the general public really understands how red flag laws work or how mental health inpatient stays work.

One, regardless of laws in New York, this guy lived in Maine and killed people in Maine. My understanding is that Maine doesn’t have red flag laws, so the criticism of “why didn’t someone do something” based on red flag laws simply doesn’t apply here.

Two, unfortunately, a two week long inpatient mental health stay is actually quite long compared to the handful of days that’s far more typical. Insurance companies aren’t paying for more than a few days in most cases to get someone “stable” on psych meds. Since there’s not really a way to “test” if meds are working or not except by asking the patient things like do you want to hurt yourself or others, it becomes exceedingly difficult to keep someone inpatient psych who doesn’t want to be there bc all they have to do is play the game and say they aren’t having those thoughts any more.
