A Stockton Springs mother was charged with killing her 3-year-old son after an autopsy showed he had suffered a fractured spine, bruises on his arms, legs, belly and head, bleeding in his brain, a ruptured bowel and other injuries, according to a police affidavit filed Thursday.

When Jessica Williams, 35, brought her son, Maddox Williams, to Waldo County General Hospital on Sunday afternoon, she told staff members that he had been knocked down by a dog leash and kicked by his 8-year-old sister.

Police pieced together what happened to Maddox prior to his death through interviews with people including Jessica Williams’ mother, Sherry Johnson; Maddox’s father, Andrew Williams; and Jason Trefethen, who lives in a camper on Cross Lane in Stockton Springs. Trefethen is the father of three of her children, who are 8, 4 and 2 years old. Altogether, Jessica Williams has five children.

Jessica Williams also lives at the Cross Lane address, though not in the camper, according to the affidavit.

The grandmother of Maddox Williams — the 3-year-old boy who authorities say was beaten to death last month, allegedly by his own mother — is facing serious criminal charges in Maine, PEOPLE confirms.

Sherry Johnson was arrested June 30 and charged with hindering the apprehension or prosecution of her daughter, Maddox's mother, Jessica Trefethen, Maine State Police confirm.

Trefethen, 35, has been in custody since June 23, three days after Maddox died. She has yet to enter a plea to the single count of murder filed against her.

The Village Soup reports Andrew Williams will serve a year and half behind bars for a variety of crimes.

Two of them occurred while Maddox was with him.

Among the crimes, an incident in January of last year when Williams broke into a home, stealing things while carrying the young boy.

Maddox was killed on June 20th. His mother Jessica Trefethen was arrested and charged with his murder three days later.

After the a judge initially rejected Williams’ request to attend his son’s funeral - a second judge ruled that decision will ultimately be left up to jail administration.

A Waldo County judge has ordered the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to share with the court all of its records regarding Maddox Williams and his three siblings.

The Stockton Springs 3-year-old died in June after suffering a fractured spine, bleeding in his brain, a ruptured bowel and other injuries. His mother, Jessica Trefethen, has been charged with the depraved indifference murder of her son.

Three-year-old Maddox Williams is shown in an undated family photograph. His mother is charged in his death last month. The boy's death was one of four in Maine last month of young children that have focused new attention on the state's child welfare system.

After his death, Maine Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea asked the court to approve a subpoena for the DHHS records of Maddox and three of his siblings, who are 8, 6 and 2 years old.

“Upon information and belief, prior to Maddox’s death and continuing after his murder, DHHS has been involved in child protective investigations with respect to Maddox [and the others],” she wrote in a motion filed on June 25. “The state anticipates that the DHHS records will include statements from Trefethen and other witnesses regarding the care of Maddox Williams and the events leading to his death.”

Because the records are confidential, the state needed the court order to obtain them. Zainea indicated that she wouldn’t be able to properly prepare for trial without the records.

The trial is expected to uncover more information about what happened to Maddox and why prosecutors believe Williams was responsible for his death. Proponents of child welfare reform say it will also reveal shortcomings in Maine’s child protection system, overseen by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Child and Family Services.

sen. Bill Diamond, D-Cumberland, said he has attended several child murder trials and only then does the public learn how many times DHHS has been called to a child’s home, or how many times they have agreed to remove or return a child.

“We don’t really find out — the public, the legislature, the press — where things went wrong until there’s a trial,” said Diamond, who has served in the State House for more than two decades and has overseen the state’s child welfare system. made and the problems with infanticides are main problem.

Maine is not a D.P. state, so I'm hoping she will be judged guilty of 1st Degree Murder and sentenced to Life with No Parole. JMO.

Caseworkers acted according to state law prior to the death of a 3-year-old who was killed by his mother in 2021, a state investigation concluded.

However, the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability is recommending several changes to improve child protection services in the future.

The state watchdog office investigated the case of Maddox Williams, who died of blunt-force trauma, following years of contact between his family and the Maine Office of Child and Family Services.

The review, released Friday, is the second of four in-depth investigations into child deaths that occurred in the summer of 2021.

Maddox’s mother, Jessica Trefethen of Stockton Springs, was sentenced to 47 years in prison in December after being found guilty of depraved indifference murder.

In all four cases, the state had prior contact with the families through the child welfare system. Lawmakers asked for the reviews to find out whether there are systemic changes that need to be made to prevent future child deaths.

Peter Schleck, director of the state’s watchdog office, said following review of 20,000 documents, his office concluded that “safety decisions regarding Maddox Williams were not unsound” given the information caseworkers had at the time.

Several times throughout the Friday review with the Government Oversight Committee, Schleck emphasized child welfare officials did not have reason to believe Trefethen posed a physical threat to Maddox or her other children.

“At no point in this case prior to Maddox’s death did any caseworker or OCFS official have information that was actionable that Ms. Trefethen was a physical threat, a violent threat, to her children,” he said.

But he did criticize a caseworker for not following up on all leads following a fight between Trefethen and her husband and for failing to file a court petition at another juncture in the case.
