ME-Missing paddle boarder Sunshine Stewart Found Dead by Homicide, Union 02 July 2025

An official familiar with the investigation told ABC News that the suspect spends vacation time in the Crawford Pond area each summer with his family.
Maine teen arrested for killing of paddleboarder at Crawford Pond, police say

question for Anyone familiar with the area around Crawford Pond - are there timeshares or privately owned homes around the pond or both? Because ATM I am thinking his family owns a summer home on the pond if they come each summer.

Also, I am unfamiliar with Maine law but it seems as if the young man can be bound over for trying as an adult but the juvenile court is the one that makes the determination if the juvenile can be tried as an adult

D. The Juvenile Court shall consider the following factors in deciding whether to bind a juvenile over for prosecution as an adult:

(1) Seriousness of the crime: the nature and seriousness of the offense with greater weight being given to offenses against the person than against property; whether the offense was committed in an aggressive, violent, premeditated or intentional manner;

(2) Characteristics of the juvenile: the record and previous history of the juvenile; the age of the juvenile; the juvenile's emotional attitude and pattern of living;

(3) Public safety: whether the protection of the community requires commitment of the juvenile for a period longer than the greatest commitment authorized; whether the protection of the community requires commitment of the juvenile to a facility that is more secure than any dispositional alternative under section 3314; and

(4) Dispositional alternatives: whether future criminal conduct by the juvenile will be deterred by the dispositional alternatives available; whether the dispositional alternatives would diminish the gravity of the offense. [PL 2015, c. 409, §1 (AMD).]

E. The Juvenile Court shall bind a juvenile over for prosecution as an adult if it finds:

(1) That there is probable cause to believe that a juvenile crime has been committed that would constitute murder or a Class A, Class B or Class C crime if the juvenile involved were an adult and that the juvenile to be bound over committed it; and

(2) After a consideration of the seriousness of the crime, the characteristics of the juvenile, the public safety and the dispositional alternatives in paragraph D, that:

(a) If the State has the burden of proof, the State has established by a preponderance of the evidence that it is appropriate to prosecute the juvenile as if the juvenile were an adult; or

(b) If the juvenile has the burden of proof, the juvenile has failed to establish by a preponderance of the evidence that it is not appropriate to prosecute the juvenile as if the juvenile were an adult. [PL 2015, c. 409, §2 (AMD).]

I am from Maine. Lived there for 48 years till I moved out west recently. Spent many summers at that Campground. I knew Sunny, not well but that area is small and everyone knows everyone. I won't put it here but if you google, his name and picture are out there this morning. Such a senseless act. She was a wonderful person.

I suspect the name and image of this teen will soon be able to be shared. I cannot imagine Maine deciding NOT to try him as an adult. He is not 14. He is 17, almost an adult. And he has committed a violent murder.

Hoping the Juvie court decides quickly that he can be tried as an adult.

He had been staying with family at the Mic Mac Cove Campground on Crawford Pond in Union where the victim was also a seasonal camper.

At least one disturbing post indicated a possible interest in sexual violence. Another depicted a mallet he had fashioned, and his profile photo shows him sitting defiantly with a rifle.

"The state indicated it is seeking to try Young as an adult. His defense attorney sought to close the hearing but a Knox County judge denied that motion."

GOOD!

I'm not sure what that's referring to

me either, the only sexual reference I have seen at all on his FB is a post (joke meme) dated December 23, 2023 that I can't really easily articulate here.

Omg. She didn’t have a chance. Get rid of him for life. IMO

Police affidavits and additional information regarding the evidence against Young will remain under seal until a status conference is held on August 22, Walker ruled.

He will turn 18 in September.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Maine State Police were collecting DNA samples from men who were near Crawford Pond on the night Stewart vanished, as first reported by the Midcoast Villager.

It’s unclear whether the arrest of the teen came as a result of DNA.

Smith told the Daily Mail she feared what the DNA search may indicate about Stewart's final moments of life.

‘I feel like it’s insinuating something that they’re only taking DNA from men and not women,’ she said.

Oh he is definitely going to be tried as an adult MOO. He is almost 18 (adult) if his birthday is in September.

With LE taking DNA samples from males it seems to give credence to there having been an SA component to this crime. (also JMO)

Maine State Police officials announced on July 5 that Stewart's death had been ruled a homicide, but did not reveal the cause of her death. On Thursday, state police revealed that Stewart's cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma.

Maine's Total Coverage discovered that Young was still active on Facebook as recently as Saturday, July 12, which was more than a week after Stewart's death. Young posted a photo of a sunset and when someone commented on the pictureand asked him how he was doing, he replied: "I'm doing good."

Young's Facebook page indicates he attended Hampden Academy, but not since 2023.

The court documents state Young will remain held at a juvenile facility ahead of his next court appearance, which is scheduled for Aug. 22

The DNA wouldn't necessarily have originated in semen. It could be from saliva, or even skin or blood scrapings from under his fingernails, or hair that she might have pulled out.

p.s. I'm glad they released his name. I'll add that I wouldn't want them to do that until and unless they had compelling evidence that he did it, because if he didn't, it could potentially destroy his life.

Hmm, statistically it would be male on female violence.
Maybe they did a prelim test on the DNA from the scene and knew it was male DNA.

The cause of death- strangulation- and her struggle could also indicate the perp is male- if she was highly overpowered. She was an active female.
It would be odd to have been a female perp- but they could have evidence of sexual assault. It sounds like she was found on the beach near her paddle board- at night. Not sure if there was an attempt to conceal.

Sicko, looks like a big kid, traveling with parents, no siblings, no friends with him. Seems odd

<modsnip - quoted post was removed - off topic>

This location seemed like exactly the place a woman could paddle-board alone and be safe.
I find it incredible sad and exhausting- women seem to need bodyguards everywhere they go and then they of course must be skeptical of the bodyguard!

Too many sickos out there

I lived in a community with similar pond in NH. Heavily wooded and also with no public access. People would get dropped off and walk in with kayaks/paddles boards all the time-even dragging in bob houses in the winter. Just because there is no public access doesn't mean public didn't access it.

Hopefully they solve this quickly. I can't imagine how unnerving this is for people who live in the community. Such a scary tragic event, Sounds like she was a lovely person.

Hmm, I can picture the situation but haven’t a clue about bob house. What is that?

A floating home?
Ice fishing house?

It would seem a private location where ‘the public’ couldn’t easily access would be safer than a city or state park. Problem is- this guy was likely camping with his family- so he was supposed to be there. Someone wasn’t supervising him- he wasn’t with friends, no siblings, no parents.

Hypothetical: Someone saw a couple of guys flirting/teasing/talking to Sunshine before she went off on her paddleboard. She may have even known them. That same someone watched LE interviewing campers after her body was found. That individual noticed that one of the men was not there. She found it strange as she thought the two men were there together. She wanted to let LE know that there was another individual seen interacting with Sunshine before her murder who made himself unavailable for LE interviews, but she didn’t want to become a witness herself. She gave the info to Sunny’s close friend to pass on.
Plausible?

Yeah, plausible. No siblings or friend has been mentioned- possibly this teen’s dad?
Can you imagine finding our your son murdered a woman at a camp ground?

Geesh
