ME-Missing paddle boarder Sunshine Stewart Found Dead by Homicide, Union 02 July 2025

  • #41
I lived in a community with similar pond in NH. Heavily wooded and also with no public access. People would get dropped off and walk in with kayaks/paddles boards all the time-even dragging in bob houses in the winter. Just because there is no public access doesn't mean public didn't access it.

Hopefully they solve this quickly. I can't imagine how unnerving this is for people who live in the community. Such a scary tragic event, Sounds like she was a lovely person.

Interesting that LE are asking for witnesses who saw anything around the island. Seems pretty focussed to me, that they have reason to believe that's the crime scene.

Also significant, IMO, is they are not issuing any sort of public caution....

Is the pond visible from various houses?

So risky for a killer that someone might see them also out on the pond, or notice the attack. Also, sound carries across the water.

Three hours seems a long time to be paddleboarding, IMO. So maybe there was someone she'd arranged to visit and hang out with - or, as you say, lured her over to their dock...
BBM for focus.

I think that Sunny went out after dinner (around 6pm) for a paddle and that wasn't unusual for her. (Obviously I may be wrong on this point!) The expectation would have been that she would have been back before dark. So, even if she only planned on paddling for only one hour the fact that she wasn't back by 9, when it became dark, showed there was a problem. So that is why LE are focused on that 3 hour timeframe.

Well, this is a potentially interesting twist...

"Stewart’s apparent murder comes as fears of a serial killer lurking within the New England region are gripping the public."

"At least 13 bodies – with the majority found in wooded or remote areas – have been discovered throughout Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, according to authorities."

And this...

"Stephen Betts, who has been covering Knox County courts for over 40 years, said he's almost never seen a case like this — a inexplicable homicide where the perpetrator and their motives are unclear, even days after the killing.""

"Violent crime, let alone murder, is exceedingly rare in Midcoast Maine. When a homicide does occur, it almost always involves drugs, domestic violence or some other interpersonal conflict between people who already know each other, according to Betts."

Stewart rented a camp site at Mic Mac Family Campground for the summer season on May 1. She had only stayed on the grounds for two or three nights prior to her disappearance on the evening of July 2. The owner of the campground said she has provided hours of video to authorities in case it can provide useful.

Mic Mac Campground has a robust security apparatus, owner Katherine Lunt told ABC News. She has 16 security cameras on the 60-acre property, all of which have facial recognition technology, she said. The campground on Crawford Pond, which is mostly a mix of RVs and tents peppered amongst the eight cabins, also has motion detectors, she said. Lunt said she's sure she knows everyone who comes in and out.

Doesn't this sound like way more security than one might expect at a rural campground? Had there been problems there in the past or is the owner just being cautious, particularly since she is a female?

Or is she just trying to identify trespassers?

Agree. I used to go camping a lot. Security was pretty minimal at both private campgrounds and state park campgrounds. But maybe things have changed in recent years.

I searched the internet for reviews of this campground. Nothing was posted recently. Older reviews were mixed - some said everything was great and others complained of noise and lack of upkeep, but not crime.

Have any of the New England SK bodies been found in Maine?? Eeek! I thought it was just New Hampshire Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut was in question.

Well, I can only take this MSM reporting that yes, 13 bodies "have been discovered throughout Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut"...

...
unless the report is attributing SS as a ME case and she is the only one. I wonder if folks living in Maine now (I'm 5 years out) know of others.

It is a fairly large pond. But looks bigger on like google map. The shore is surrounded with lots of little family camps and woods. The shoreline is not walkable imo. Its lots Rocks and wooded areas that you couldn’t necessarily like pull up on… like a beach, but you could I suppose - and definitely could if there was a dock. Its really quite nice. In the summer its super busy with water sports, docks, floats, kids, boats, etc. especially 4th of july week. Many of the private homes have been in families for generations and have a steady flow of visitors and families during summer months. And there are a few vacation rentals but not sure they are advertised - more like If you know an owner or know someone kinda situation. Many people have been surprised anyone would be out on the water between 6-9pm eastern time- but the sunsets right now at approximately 8:20 pm so not inconceivable. In Union and surrounding towns there are a ton of working farms and during the summer months the farms hire many workers - from away. Maine is also affected by the housing crisis and there are many “off the grid” tent communities- and you would never know it unless you literally stumbled upon them. Dense forest and all. So while Knox County is quite vast, (its not weird to drive 30 minutes to get anywhere) its a small community; Like Everyone knows everyone or their cousin. Lol. That being said lots of people knew the victim, her family and other individuals or businesses that have been touched by this. So there is a lot of information that locals know about that hasn’t been shared with the public, yet. And information obviously should be taken with a grain of salt and mind your source.

Trying to wrap my head around out how this happened has been a challenge- naturally without all the facts and Taking into account what i would or wouldn’t do on my own have a peaceful evening paddle. I probably wouldn’t go explore the island - its getting dark, my houseguest is due back soon and we will do dinner. The mosquitos are coming out. there is no easy access to shore and i don’t really want to try this close to dark, barefoot. I might paddle around the island. Now knowing the victim, she wasn’t naive or sheltered by any means. she was tough, kind, funny, adventurous and friendly. If someone waved to her from a dock or boat asking for help she would go help. If someone she had met or someone she knew waved her over to their location she would be go say hello.
If she felt she was in danger she wouldn’t engage.

Was there a boat involved? Its my understanding no boat was involved in her death. Now Strictly Hypothetical thoughts out of Logic …Could someone have been following her in a boat- discretely or aggressively, to which she was made so uncomfortable she opted to paddle to the closest dock or home of someone she knew, to get help and get her phone to call 911. Yes
but know one was home or house was locked and predators caught her. was unalived - body placed on paddleboard and shoved out into pond and left to drift in current ultimately ending up on shore of the island. Possibly.
could crime have happened on a boat? Maybe, If there was more than two other individuals on hypothetical boat. cause no one could easily wrangle a strong fit wet fighting screaming woman into their boat, without help. And its a boat. Someone has to control the boat. No victim is going to sit still while an impulsive monster demands you stay put so they can assault and kill you in a bit but at moment they need to maneuver the vessel. So unless there are two + peeps- not likely.
she has a big paddle- wonder if she got in a few whacks before she succumbed... makes more sense she was surprised and attacked but they do not tell us how she died?

The campground offers daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal stays. Did anyone leave earlier than expected? Who left the night of Sunshine’s disappearance or the next morning? Did the killer notice Sunshine when she checked into the campground a couple of days before she was killed? The campground website encourages people to visit the island via boat and/or paddleboard.

Although the public can gain access to Crawford Lake by cutting through private property and uninhabited cabins, would a killer with no ties to the victim sneak into the area surrounding the lake on the off chance he might find someone to kill? Doesn’t seem likely. Opportunity killers usually cruise an area where they are likely to find a victim.
With both day use watercraft renters and overnight campers, there is a good chance the killer may have been caught on one of the camp’s many security cameras. It will take hours and hours of footage review to see if LE can identify a potential suspect.

Great point!

Are there water toy rental equipment businesses along the lake?
Employees?

Someone said earlier that Sunshine had rented a paddleboard from the camp ground. That would make sense if it was the camp ground owner who reported her missing later on. Did she rent a paddleboard for three hours, hence the oddly specific 6 - 9 pm timeframe given?

Sunset was at 8:27pm, probably some twilight after.
The moon was close to full as well. Moonrise was at 6:19pm that night.

It might have been a lovely evening for a paddle, if not for the rather unfortunate homicide part

The interview at the end of this video with the friend of Sunshine, mentioned a possible situation at the campground involving several persons there that night. 10:30 minute of the video. Brian Entin is the interviewer, of News Nation.

I didn't get the specific sense that there was a 'situation'. I took the comment to mean that there were two people at the campground that night (for whatever reason she was focused on them) and only one had been interviewed by the police but the other one hadn't. So she passed that person's name on to police so that they could interview them.

It seemed to me that some kind of situation happened, as the friend was sent the tip about it and she sent it on to LE. I tried to use a general mild word to describe it whatever it was. JMO.
