Dechaine, who was 30 at the time of the killing, has a fierce group of supporters who say he couldn’t be the killer. They’ve pointed to alternative suspects.

Despite Dechaine's insistence that the evidence was planted to implicate him, WGME-TV reports that a judge ruled against him on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Judge Bruce Mallonee said the evidence wasn't convincing enough to counteract the original findings and warrant a new trial.

Dennis Dechaine is serving a life sentence for the murder of Sarah Cherry

"Sarah Cherry was twelve years old when she suffered and died," Superior Court Justice Bruce Mallonee wrote in a Thursday ruling. "Had she lived, she would now be approaching fifty. This case is exhausted. Perhaps now the poor dead child might rest."

Justice Mallonee continued, saying, "The new DNA evidence is weak, vague, and without practical meaning. It does nothing to undermine the old evidence that so fully supported the jury's original verdict."

I am so glad Dennis has exhausted all of his appeals. It must be horrible for the parents of Sarah to have to relive this every time Dennis files for an appeal. I was honored to know Sarah’s stepfather and knew Sarah through my friends. I studied Law through the University of Maine system and one of my professors was the parent’s attorney. We spoke of this case in class and let me tell you, Dennis is guilty beyond any doubt.
I’m hoping people will let this family finally grieve without all the rumors.
