UPDATED: Grandparents hope skull not Caylee's

Caylee and her mother lived with George and Cindy Anthony. The grandparents have returned home after spending time in a hotel while investigators searched their house for evidence late last week. Their attorney said that items were taken from their home which was not on a search warrant.

Crime scene technicians and detectives on Monday continued to search the woods near the Anthony home, where the skull was found last week by a meter reader. Capt. Angelo Nieves, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Office, said he couldn't confirm reports that more bones had been found in the area over the weekend.

UPDATED: Is It Caylee? More Bones Found
Monday, December 15, 2008 11:52:01 PM

The Orange County Sheriff's Office would not confirm the report, but did say evidence is mounting that the skeletal remains of a small child found Thursday may belong to Caylee Anthony. At a late-afternoon briefing, Capt. Angelo Nieves said that on Monday more significant finds have been made, but that he could not reveal the specifics.

Nieves said they have brought in a botonist, an antropologist and an entomologist to examine the scene and that the search will continue through Wednesday, at the earliest.

"As they're moving slowly, they're moving carefully, they'll make, as they work with the medical examiner's office and the FBI lab, they'll make a determination as to what possibly occurred, what the condition of the body is, and analyze, evaluate that and provide that to the medical examiner and the FBI in order to come to a conclusion," Nieves said.

Sifting through all the debris is tedious work but experts including Orange County Medical Examiner Dr. G. will stay as long as needed. Nieves said the sheriff's office plans to leave no stone unturned.

No Reward For Meter Reader Who Found Skull

That phone call makes the meter reader ineligible for a $5,000 Crimeline reward. To collect the reward, you have to call Crimeline first before you call 911.

"You have to initiate a tip with Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS," explained Detective Barb Bergin, Crimeline. "We don't have enough money to pay rewards to everyone who calls 911."

Bergin encourages people to call 911 if there is an emergency, but Crimeline calls are answered 24 hours a day.

"We have qualified people -- the best in the business -- reviewing this evidence," said Jose Baez, the attorney for Anthony, who remains jailed on first-degree murder charges in the disappearance of her 3-year-old daughter, Caylee. "I'm not about pumping my chest and flaunting about who we're bringing in, you'll see it when they come," Baez said.

UPDATED: DNA Testing Could Take Weeks
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 12:08:29 AM

<snipped>
News 13's Stephanie Coueignoux spoke with criminal expert Dr. Richard Weinblatt. He said that a delay in identification is normal.

Weinblatt said that because the remains were found in an area that had been underwater, they are better preserved, making it easier to get tissue and DNA evidence.

"What they have to do is set up the DNA, and they're going by markers. Kind of like comparing fingerprints, but it's genetic fingerprints. They have to put it together. Now, the less material they have, the less comparison points they have to go by," Weinblatt said.

Attorney: Caylee's grandparents stand by accused daughter
December 16, 2008

<snipped>
The grandparents of missing 2-year-old Caylee Anthony continue to stand by their daughter, who is accused of killing Caylee, an attorney said Monday.

The lawyer's announcement came just hours before a source confirmed authorities discovered bones in the area where a body believed to be Caylee's was found last week. The bones were scattered in the dirt, perhaps by an animal, the source said.

Crime scene investigators were searching the area where the body was found and will continue searching through at least Wednesday, according to Commander Capt. Angelo Nieves with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

For five days, federal and Orange County authorities have toiled in the woods where a child's skull was discovered in a plastic bag.

Investigators hauled out boxes of brush and dirt. Crime-scene technicians on their hands and knees combed through debris. Others shook soil through sifters, searching for any tiny particle that might help determine whether the remains are of missing Caylee Marie Anthony.

Five long days -- and yet the work has just begun.

Sheriff's officials said Monday that the lot, a quarter-mile from the home of the child's grandparents, could remain a crime scene for several more days as the evidence crews and various experts, including an anthropologist, an entomologist and a botanist, search methodically for more clues.

Conway said the grandparents were not being investigated for any crimes, such as obstruction of justice. George and Cindy Anthony have been fingerprinted by investigators but only to rule them out as suspects. They are cooperating with detectives, he said.

"They have not obstructed any investigation," Conway said.

"They haven't destroyed any evidence. They have in no way interfered with what the ... sheriff's office has to do."

Conway replaced high-profile local attorney Mark NeJame, who said he quit because the Anthonys didn't always heed his advice.

Captain Angelo Nieves of the Orange County Sheriff's Office says investigators will take as long as necessary to complete their search. "The reason we stay here so long, is again, they're doing a meticulous job out there, they're going very slowly, very methodically, in order to make a determination and look at all of the items that are there," Nieves said.

"If there's something that needs attention, they will continue to provide attention to that again, the site will dictate how long they will be here, not the investigators," he added.

Updated: Judge Denies Request From Casey's Defense For 2nd Autopsy
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 7:11:53 PM

Defense attorney Jose Baez had also filed a motion requesting immediate release of all photos, videos and drawings from the scene where the bones of a small child were found. Judge Stan Strickland denied that request after the prosecution said they were worried that graphic images might be leaked to the press and that it was not yet determined that the bones do, in fact, belong to Caylee Anthony.

Sheriff's attorney says skull belongs to a little girl
2:20 p.m. An attorney for the Orange County Sheriff's Office just described the child's body found near the Anthony house as a "little girl." It marks the first time an official for the agency has identified the gender of the body, which is believed to be Caylee Marie.

The gender came up as the attorney for the Sheriff's Office was describing what types of photos the agency was not willing to turn over to Jose Baez, who represents Caylee's mother, Casey Anthony.
