Casey Anthony case: the shoes, the other tipster, the stuffed animals
posted by halboedeker on May 1, 2009 6:30:10 PM

Here are some more details from television that caught my attention:

*** "Casey Anthony apparently likes shoes. She owns lots of them, more than 20 pairs," WKMG-Channel 6's Mike DeForest reported. Lab tests do not show a conclusive link between soil samples collected from bottom of the shoes and dirt at the spot where Caylee's body was found was found, DeForest noted. Casey is charged with daughter Caylee's murder.

*** WKMG's Louis Bolden explained Roy Kronk's reasoning for looking for Caylee's remains in the area where they were later found. Bolden read Kronk's comment: "It just made sense to me that if you were going to get rid of something like that well you would put it in a place you knew there would be very little traffic whatsoever."

Records show drug test results of Caylee Anthony's remains
Also released: records on job performance of deputy who failed to follow through on tip about location of Caylee's body
Sarah Lundy | Sentinel Staff Writer
5:59 PM EDT, May 1, 2009

Examiners did not detect Alprazolam, known under the trade name Xanax, or diazepam, marketed as Valium, according to the report.

The hair samples were not tested for chloroform, "as this examination is not deemed probative by the FBI Laboratory's Chemistry Unit."

"Although the method used in this analysis allows for the detection of very small amounts of the drugs listed, negative results should not be interpreted as proof that the individual was not exposed to the drugs listed," the report stated.

Cindy Voicemail: "Casey Had To Have Had Help"
Posted: 9:00 pm EDT April 22, 2009
Updated: 11:35 am EDT April 23, 2009

A voicemail obtained by Eyewitness News is raising new questions in the case against Casey Anthony. As the complex and layered story continues to develop, the voicemail message gives a better idea of Cindy Anthony's mindset in the days following her granddaughter's disappearance.

Casey's mother, Cindy Anthony, left the message for Sgt. John Allen, one of the lead detectives in the case, in July 2008. In the message, Cindy Anthony tried to emphasize that she was trying to help the investigation.

Taxpayers Will Have To Pay For Kronk's Legal Fees
Posted: 4:43 pm EDT April 28, 2009
Updated: 9:51 am EDT April 29, 2009

Eyewitness News learned Tuesday that taxpayers will have to pay the attorney fees for a key witness in the case against Casey Anthony. Orange County commissioners decided to use taxpayer money to pay Roy Kronk's attorney's fees.

The county has 22 attorneys on staff. Kronk has an outside lawyer and the county has already paid $10,000.
It is not known how much more Kronk's attorney will be paid.

Caylee's hair negative for variety of drugs
By Sarah Lundy | SENTINEL STAFF WRITER
May 2, 2009

The bulk of the documents released Friday focused on the discovery of Caylee's remains and why she wasn't found four months earlier, in August.

Orange County meter reader Roy Kronk found Caylee's skeletal remains while on his route. That discovery, however, came after he alerted detectives multiple times about a suspicious bag in the woods in August. One deputy — later identified as Orange County Deputy Richard Cain — failed to follow through on a tip.

Lab Tests Don't Link Anthony Evidence
New Documents Released In Anthony Case
POSTED: Thursday, April 30, 2009
UPDATED: 6:55 pm EDT May 1, 2009

Included in the document release were lab results from evidence found in the Anthony home, Casey Anthony's car and in the woods where Caylee's remains were found.

According to the documents, detectives were trying to link evidence from all three locations, but based on the lab results so far, there is no conclusive scientific connection.

Scientists at the FBI lab examined Caylee's hair for foreign chemicals, specifically muscle relaxants and Xanex, but no chemicals were found. Scientists said it is still possible that Caylee was exposed to small amounts of the drugs.

New Documents Claim Caylee Should Have Been Found Earlier
Sunday, May 03, 2009 8:13:00 AM

It was a call from meter reader Roy Kronk that led authorities to finding Caylee.

Skeletal remains were found less than a mile away from her home in east Orange County.

But this wasn't the first time Kronk called the Orange County Sheriff's Office about something suspicious in that area.

Now, the deputy, Richard Cain, who officials said should have found the remains in August, should be fired.

More documents released in Anthony case
Updated: Friday, 01 May 2009, 11:09 PM EDT
Published : Friday, 01 May 2009, 9:24 AM EDT

Surprisingly, the FBI did not test Caylee's hair for Chloroform. You may recall the trunk of Casey Anthony's white Pontiac tested positive for unusually high levels of chloroform. But Chloroform is released naturally through the body during the process of decomposition.

Some unrelated but interesting things that grabbed our attention that were also tested because they were found in the woods not far from caylee's remains, a kitchen knife, a copper bullet jacket and more duct tape.

Casey Anthony case: WESH explores 'ugly coping'
posted by halboedeker on Apr 28, 2009 11:53:12 PM

In an interview with WESH, Jose Baez, Anthony's attorney, gave an oft-repeated line: "She has a very compelling reason for her actions."

That's all he was saying about his client. But Baez evidently sees a parallel in the case of a military wife who partied, purchased breast implants and slept around after her husband's death. Cynthia Sommer was charged with her husband's murder, but she was freed after two years in jail.

WESH anchor Jim Payne followed that with another question: "By steering you to this case does Baez tip his hand?"
Kealing replied that Baez's spokeswoman said the Sommer connection is "not an accurate representation of the defense strategy."
Kealing added, "We're not saying this is going to be his defense."
Which raises a question: Why was this report shown?

Casey Anthony case: Did you like the spins that 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' put on a familiar story?
posted by halboedeker on Apr 28, 2009 11:20:57 PM

The episode echoed familiar details from the Casey Anthony case. But halfway through the hour, the NBC drama went its own way and revealed a killer unfamiliar in the headline-making case.

SPOILER ALERT:

And the killer was ... the measles.

The "Law & Order" series borrow from famous cases, then insert their own twists. And the measles? That was a whopper.

A little girl, the Caylee-like figure, had died of exposure to the measles. Her mom -- the Casey-like figure played by Hilary Duff -- had buried her. Mom liked to party more than parent.

In an emotional jailhouse scene, Mom tearfully confided, "I killed my baby!"

Casey Anthony: County will pay more legal bills for meter reader
posted by halboedeker on Apr 28, 2009 6:31:21 PM

Orange County has approved an additional $2,500 for Roy Kronk's attorney. Kronk is the meter reader who found Caylee Anthony's remains.

"Commissioners say they'd do the same for any other county employee," WESH-Channel 2's Bob Kealing reported tonight.

"It is the usual for local government and Orange County to pay the attorney fees of an employee that is involved in a legal matter that is related to their employment," Commissioner Fred Brummer told Kealing.

Casey Anthony: In WESH interview, Jose Baez points to case of young widow who went on a spending spree

What explains Casey Anthony's seeming lack of remorse and that spending spree she went on?

WESH-Channel 2 anchors Jim Payne and Martha Sugalski last night teased to a report that will air at 11 tonight.

As teases go, it was pretty effective -- even if I questioned some of the wording.

Casey Anthony: WFTV looks at county's paying meter reader's legal bills
posted by halboedeker on Apr 27, 2009 5:52:16 PM

Who picks up county meter reader Roy Kronk's legal bills?

WFTV-Channel 9's Mary Nguyen explored the issue this evening. Kronk discovered Caylee Anthony's remains in December while he was on the job. Casey Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of Caylee, her daughter.

Kronk makes $11 an hour, and the attorney makes $225 an hour, Nguyen explained.

In December, the county had approved $10,000 for an attorney to help Kronk deal with the media. Kronk is seeking an additional $2,500 to prepare for the criminal case. The Orange County Commission is scheduled to take up the issue tomorrow.

Casey Anthony case: In WESH interview, Jose Baez apologizes if he hasn't shown outrage that wronged woman is jailed
posted by halboedeker on Apr 25, 2009 10:43:11 AM

Where is the outrage from the defense that the wrong woman has been jailed?

Bob Kealing of WESH-Channel 2 asked that question of Jose Baez, who is representing Casey Anthony in her murder trial.

"I apologize if I haven't shown that previously," Baez said.

"I've pulled out all the stops to try to get her the best defense possible," he added. "That's what I'm mostly concerned with. I have to stay focused. I can't get emotional."

Casey Anthony case: Exec producer warns against reading too much into episode of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'
posted by halboedeker on Apr 24, 2009 10:51:11 AM

Next week's episode of NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" has one or two eerie parallels to the Casey Anthony case. For instance, a grandmother (played by Gail O'Grady) goes to police and complains about a stench in a car.

"That had the buzzers going off in your head," series executive producer Neal Baer told me.
Well, yeah. But how should I feel when I hear that?
"You can feel any way you like," Baer told me. "You shouldn't jump to conclusions."

Anthony Files For Change Of Venue
Baez: Motion Asks Specifically For Trial To Be Moved To South Florida
POSTED: Sunday, May 3, 2009
UPDATED: 5:53 pm EDT May 4, 2009

The defense team member told Local 6 News investigative reporter Tony Pipitone that a change of venue is necessary, saying a fair and impartial trial cannot occur if only Orange County residents are considered as jurors.

Publicity in the Anthony case has been pervasive on cable television and tabloid magazines, but the scrutiny has been even greater in Central Florida, Pipitone reported.

But publicity alone does not require Orange County Circuit Judge Stan Strickland to relocate the trial or decide to select jurors from another part of the state. Prosecutors could also oppose the motion.

Casey Anthony won't get fair trial in Orlando, attorney tells 'Today' show
Walter Pacheco | Sentinel Staff Writer
9:28 AM EDT, May 4, 2009

Attorney Linda Kenney-Baden said people searching online with such phrases as "women who kill children'' will get five to 10 news articles.

"If you put in Casey Anthony, you'll get 7 million hits. But most of it is from the local coverage and reprinting of local coverage stories. Because every single day since I've been in this case, which is Dec. 11th, there has been a story, a story, a story," she said. "Even when there's a non-story, there's a story."

In contrast, the attorney said, the national media "gives us a fair shake."

Who is Jose Baez? Defending Casey Anthony brings celebrity, headaches
Henry Pierson Curtis | Sentinel Staff Writer
May 4, 2009

He was a low-profile local attorney, however, until he started working for Anthony, the 23-year-old mother accused of killing her toddler daughter, Caylee. Before that, no one was asking him to appear on ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN or to jump aboard Fox TV reporter Geraldo Rivera's 70-foot ketch for an afternoon of sailing.

Along with the celebrity have come insinuations that Baez is over his head in the Anthony case — sometimes from a law professor or someone such as former prosecutor Nancy Grace of Headline News.

Baez, 40, would not be interviewed for this story. His spokesperson issued a statement accusing the Orlando Sentinel of engaging "in a sensationalist persecution of a Hispanic lawyer…"

Casey Anthony: Linda Kenney Baden lambastes local media
posted by halboedeker on May 4, 2009 9:05:18 AM

"You grieve differently," Baden said. "We saw an incredible miscarriage of justice" in the Cynthia Sommer case, Baden added. (Yes, and WESH-Channel 2 covered that story last week.)

What about those Casey-goes-clubbing photos? "It is evidence of nothing," Baden said, even as "Today" showed some photos like every other media outlet.

Curry asked about how Anthony is doing. "She is doing as best she can for being told the state wants to take her life," Baden said.

As the interview ended, Baden said, "Thank you, Ann. Thank you for being fair."

UPDATED: Baez Wants Trial Moved To South Florida
Monday, May 04, 2009 5:30:12 PM

<snipped>
"All local news networks continue to report on all aspects of this case and public opinion continues to be heated and negative towards Casey Marie Anthony. Specifically blog sites in which users express their opinions on the facts of this case are readily accessible to all local internet users," Baez said.

If Judge Strickland feels he can not get a fair and impartial jury, the trial will be moved.
Strickland could also order a "random sampling," which is where you try to put a jury together to see if you can find fair and impartial jurers.
According to News 13's Jacqueline Fell, Strickland will most likely consult with other judges and try to choose a county with the least media coverage.

Baez Wants Venue Change For Casey's Trial
Posted: 7:54 am EDT May 4, 2009
Updated: 6:06 pm EDT May 4, 2009

Casey Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, is pushing for a change of venue because of too much local publicity. Prosecutors have never gone on camera for the case, but Baez does it regularly to react to evidence and other developments.

Even Monday, he timed his news conference so that he could do it live at the top of the five o'clock news. Eyewitness News opted not to air it and he was upset about that.

WFTV reporter Kathi Belich had the chance to ask Baez whether he helped cause the publicity problem, but Baez would not answer the question. Casey herself doesn't like the questions Belich has asked her in the past and it's one of the reasons Casey says she wants her murder trial moved out of the Orange County courthouse.

Casey Anthony’s murder trial may not take place in central Florida. Her attorney Jose Baez says there's no way she can get a fair trail in central Florida so he filed a motion requesting a change of venue. Fox News analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano offers his perspective.

Casey Anthony defense team wants trial moved to South Florida

Kissimmee lawyer Jose Baez stated if Anthony 's case remains in Orange County, her right to a fair trial and impartial jury "will undoubtedly be violated."

In the 17-page motion, Baez listed a slew of examples of media reports on the case -- ranging from protesters staged outside the Anthony family home to audio files of law-enforcement interviews. It is the sheer volume of reporting on the case, combined with community reaction to the missing toddler, on which the defense is pinning its hopes for a venue change.

He gives examples of protesters standing outside the Anthonys' home holding signs. One said, "Baby Killer," according to the motion. Another said, "Angel Killer."
