Caylee Anthony: Cause of death still 'homicide of unknown origin,' WESH reports
posted by halboedeker on Jun 12, 2009 5:39:07 PM
<snipped>
Dr. Jan Garavaglia told WESH's Bob Kealing that "nothing's changed in the cause of death -- it's still homicide of unknown origin."

But Garavaglia added that she includes a summary where she draws conclusions about what happened, Kealing said. The state attorney's office received that report a month ago. Casey Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of daughter Caylee.

The state released more documents today in the Anthony case, but there wasn't a lot of news. The judge delayed the release of Caylee's autopsy after George and Cindy Anthony's attorney filed a motion to seal the autopsy until Casey's trial. Judge Stan Strickland wants to hear what the media have to say about the Anthonys' motion and issued a temporary stay late Thursday.

Casey 1 Year Ago: Crisis Created
Casey Anthony Remains Jailed In Death Of Daughter
POSTED: Sunday, June 14, 2009
UPDATED: 7:59 am EDT June 14, 2009
<snipped>
Local 6 News reporter Tony Pipitone continued his research into the past year of Anthony's life, and he said documents show that Anthony and her best friend, Amy Huizenga, were supposed to drive to Jacksonville early on June 13, 2008, to retrieve a car from a relative.

Anthony was also supposed to attend her new boyfriend's hip-hop showcase at the Fusian Ultra Lounge, documents show.

At 6:16 a.m., Huizenga received an urgent text message from Anthony that said, "I'm on my way to the hospital with my dad. I'll call you when I can."

About 90 minutes later, Anthony texted, "My dad almost had a stroke. We are still waiting for him to get checked out. I promise I will call you ASAP."

The story about her father, George Anthony, was news to him, according to a released interview with law enforcement.

Casey Anthony case: Caylee last seen a year ago today
Video of Casey Anthony's daughter, Caylee Marie, was captured a year ago today.
9:31 AM EDT, June 15, 2009
<snipped>
We didn't see the video until she was already missing. But exactly a year ago, Caylee Marie Anthony looked like a happy little girl.

She played with her ponytail. She cooed to herself -- in her own 2-year-old language -- as she flipped through children's book Suppertime for Frieda Fuzzypaws.

These are among the images George and Cindy Anthony remember about their granddaughter. They're also the last known ones captured of the toddler's life.

The next day, June 16, 2008, she told her grandpa George goodbye and left their east Orange County home with her mother, Casey Anthony.

It was another month -- a bizarre, confusing and agonizing month -- before George and Cindy learned the truth. Caylee was missing.

What has happened in the year since thrust the Anthonys and Central Florida law enforcement into a national spotlight. And into a national obsession.

1 Year Ago: Last Video Of Caylee Taken
Toddler Last Seen Alive June 16, 2008
POSTED: Monday, June 15, 2009
UPDATED: 3:30 pm EDT June 15, 2009
<snipped>
On June 15, 2008, before Caylee Anthony was a household name, the toddler was videotaped singing a song and sitting on her grandfather's lap while celebrating Father's Day.

The recording, taken at a nursing home in Mount Dora, was the last one taken of Caylee, just one day before she was last seen alive and one month before she was reported missing.

In an interview with deputies in July, Caylee's great-grandmother Shirley Plesea recalled the visit.

"Caylee ran right up to grandpa so he could hold her, and she wasn't afraid of him and she hadn't seen him for a while," Plesea said.

"Casey used to come pretty often with Cindy and Caylee," Plesea said. "Lately she hadn't come as much. Not that there was any estrangement between her and grandpa or anything, but she just, I don't know."

Anthonys' Street Seeing Less Visitors
Neighbor Had Trouble Selling Orange County Home
POSTED: Monday, June 15, 2009
UPDATED: 8:30 pm EDT June 15, 2009
<snipped>
Although the neighborhood is quiet now, residents of Hopespring Drive have endured months of chaos in the wake of the Casey Anthony case.

During the height of the search for missing toddler Caylee Anthony, the east Orange County neighborhood was inundated with around the clock news coverage and dozens of protesters as Anthony was arrested and then released on house arrest several times last summer.

Torres said there was so much traffic on the street that he got to the point that he would not let his young daughter go outside.

"We were not able to let her outside because cars were driving all the time. A lot of traffic," Torres said.

The grandparents of slain toddler Caylee Anthony say they want to bring awareness to the cases of other missing children.

Cindy and George Anthony told CBS' "The Early Show" Tuesday that on the first anniversary of Caylee's disappearance they want to help other families whose children are missing. Cindy Anthony says so many missing children are forgotten.

Casey Anthony: What the reporters have to say about the story -- WFTV's Kathi Belich cites 'concern people have for Caylee'
posted by halboedeker on Jun 15, 2009 12:30:11 PM
<snipped>
But what has struck the reporters who have covered the Anthony saga?

I asked a few who have been on the Anthony beat for nearly a year.

Kathi Belich, WFTV-Channel 9: "What strikes me most about covering this story is the outpouring of love and concern that people have for Caylee even though they never knew her. And the difficulty in dealing with her family's unpredictable and perplexing behavior. People feel protective and attached to this adorable little girl and want to make sure that her memory is honored and that justice is served. They believe deeply that she deserves it, and they are tireless in efforts to communicate that on a regular basis. I have never gotten so many e-mails about one story!"

Tony Pipitone, WKMG-Channel 6: "At first, the high level of interest from all over the country was surprising. This was, after all, at its heart, a domestic missing child investigation, but with some photogenic main characters. As the investigation progressed, though, it seemed each development led to some bizarre or, at least, interesting twist, and as we dug into the details, a pretty rich story developed. And people still ask me about it in the Publix."

Casey Anthony defense attorney appears on 'Today'
One of Casey Anthony's attorneys, Linda Kenney Baden, appeared on NBC's 'Today' show.
9:00 AM EDT, June 16, 2009
<snipped>
One of Casey Anthony's defense attorneys appeared on NBC's Today show, but answered very little about the case.

Host Meredith Vieira asked Anthony's defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden if she could provide some insight into her client's thoughts on today's date -- a year after anyone last saw Caylee Marie Anthony alive.

But Linda Baden, who appeared alongside her husband, Michael Baden, avoided answering Vieira's questions, saying only that "we have an innocent client and we are going to be addressing all those issues in court in the next year to come."

"I can't tell you what the client says," Linda Baden told Vieira. "I can't do."

Vieira laughed it off by telling Baden, "so you basically won't tell me anything, will you Linda?"

A memorial for Caylee was held Tuesday evening in Blanchard Park in East Orange County.

"I didn't want to do this along Suburban Drive," said Richard Grund, memorial speaker. "I immediately said no that's not how I remember her...swinging, singing."

A Facebook sight dedicated to Caylee's memory has more than 22,000 members. When he saw that number, Grund said he realized Caylee has become a symbol for many all over the world who've felt abused and abandoned. But, he said it's time to move past the obsession over Caylee.

"There are other kids out there," Grund said. "Let's take this focus and share it."

Casey Anthony: WESH analyst says Jose Baez is not focusing on issues that will help his client
posted by halboedeker on Jun 15, 2009 5:45:30 PM
<snipped>
Her attorney Jose Baez wants to interview five more jail employees about that tape of Anthony's reaction on the day Caylee's remains were found, WESH-Channel 2 reported. Prosecutors say Baez is "is trying to deflect attention from the evidence in the case and focus on bogus claims of government misconduct," WESH's Bob Kealing reported. Prosecutors are asking Judge Stan Strickland to decide what to do with the tape without having a hearing about the issue, Kealing added.

Defense attorney Richard Hornsby, who offers legal analysis for WESH, gave a blunt assessment of Baez: "You have an inexperienced lawyer who might be in a little over his head who's not focusing on the real issues in the case that will really help Miss Anthony at the end of the day."

Lawyer: George and Cindy Anthony Don't Know Truth, Casey Likely to Take Stand in Trial
Anthony Attorneys Battle to Quell Information Leaks Which Fuel 'Scewed Version of Events'
June 16, 2009
<snipped>
"They support her, but they don't know what the truth is," Conway said. "There's probably one person that knows the whole truth. That's Casey Anthony."

It's a truth that should come out, Conway said, in the course of a trial during which Casey Anthony would likely take the stand in her own defense.

"In this matter, it's almost inconceivable that she wouldn't take the stand. I think based on [Casey Anthony's attorney] Mr. Baez's assertions, she has to take the stand," Conway said.

While police have no other suspects in Caylee's death, Conway said there is "reason to believe that other people were involved," and asked if their involvement could even have bordered on "conspiracy."

"I think there's a lot of facts out there that are being held back by the defense, and rightfully so," Conway said. "And those will come out at trial. So I think people's opinions will change."

Casey Anthony Charged With Murder In Daughter's Death

A man who once thought he was Caylee's grandfather helped organize a memorial at Blanchard Park Tuesday evening. Richard Grund's son, Jesse Grund, is Casey Anthony's ex-fiance.

"From the day this case started the world was invited in," Grund said. "If you remember, any time there was a camera, the family said, 'Come on in. Learn about Caylee.' Well people fell in love with Caylee. You can't invite everybody into your home and then say, 'Oh, go away. We don't want you anymore.' Now these people are emotionally invested."

Around a dozen people had gathered at the memorial by 6 p.m.

Local 6 reporter Tony Pipitone used cell phone records to track Casey Anthony's day on June 16.

A vigil Tuesday night marked one year since Caylee Marie Anthony was last seen alive.

A Facebook group called “In Memory of Caylee Marie Anthony” hosted the event at Jay Blanchard Park.

Caylee’s grandfather, George Anthony, appeared on the CBS “Early Show” Tuesday morning, on which he talked about the last moments he had with his granddaughter.

“One year ago today, I woke up with her that morning, at 7:30, and got a chance to have breakfast with her,” George Anthony said. “Just before 1:00 that day, I never realized I would never see her, kiss her, hold, hear her call me ‘JoJo’ and put me in a car and wave goodbye with her.”

Caylee Anthony: How the grandparents, the lawyers and television have kept it a case that grips the nation
posted by halboedeker on Jun 16, 2009 10:04:59 AM
<snipped>
But their baffling actions have spurred constant speculation: Did they do enough to protect Caylee? Have they done enough to get justice for the toddler? Did they help law enforcement as much as they could? Why do they keep popping up in the media?

Why aren't George and Cindy visiting Casey in jail? "This is a decision that's been made by Mr. Baez," Conway told "GMA," referring to Casey's attorney Jose Baez. "Mr. Baez does not want the videotapes, the audiotapes that he feels would be released when they go in to see her."

These practices have been in place a long time. But the Anthony case brought them home to the public in a new and jarring way.

Something just doesn't smell right in this media circus, and the public knows it.

Pathetic party girl Casey Anthony on her own wouldn't make this a case that captivates the country. But her parents, the lawyers and national television have elevated the saga to that status.

"But do you know of any theory that rules out Casey as being under the umbrella of suspicion here?" asked GMA reporter Chris Cuomo.

"I do not, no. I don't," responded Conway.

But Conway does think someone else may have been involved with the crime.

"I think there's reason to believe that other people were involved. The question is what was their involvement? How deep was it? Was it minimal or was it actually bordering on conspiracy?" asked Conway.

Conway went on to say that he and his clients are trying to take control over the information that the public gets to see. They want to make sure Casey gets a fair trial.

Anniversary of Caylee’s disappearance

Tonight, dozens of people will gather at J. Blanchard Park to remember the toddler. "We're getting together to acknowledge the loss of Caylee a year ago and to honor her and remember," Richard Grund. His son, Jesse, was once engaged to Casey.

Grund, who is an ordained minister, will lead the prayers. An Internet group which started on the social networking site Facebook.com has been raising money for a balloon and butterfly release following the vigil.

Grund said little Caylee always loved butterflies, so he feels they are symbolic. "I'd like for people to remember her for what she was, a singing, laughing little girl," he said, adding, "if we remember her as a butterfly, we will see her beauty."

The vigil begins at 6 p.m. this evening at J.Blanchard Park.

COVERING CAYLEE ANTHONY – SENSATIONAL AND SAD
Tuesday, June 16, 2009 9:40 AM
<snipped>
From the deepest recesses of my memory, I can’t remember a human drama story that’s quite like this one.

Still, this murder investigation is different. Sensational, yes, but it’s always sad.

It’s important to remember, and it’s always on my mind: a little girl is dead.

Still, there are bizarre developments. Some you may have heard; others never went reported.

*It’s estimated the murder trial is at least one year away. Now 23-year-old Casey Anthony is charged with killing her own daughter. If convicted, she could be sentenced to death.
