UPDATED: One Year Later: A Look Back At The Case Against Casey
Posted: 3:53 pm EDT June 16, 2009
Updated: 6:07 pm EDT June 16, 2009
<snipped>
The next day, Casey Anthony paraded past Eyewitness News' camera after being caught in a litany of lies about a nanny and a job she didn't have. Her parents pressed her in jail about what happened to Caylee.

"We're going to see her little face again. I pray to God, Casey," Cindy said.

"I know in my heart she's not far. I can feel it," Casey told them.

While Casey seemed to be comforting her parents, prosecutors believe she might have been taunting them because she murdered Caylee and knew where she was.

There was no hiding for Casey on October 14, 2008. Her father testified against her. Later that day, a grand jury indicted her for first-degree murder.

Next in the case, there will be a hearing over whether the state should be allowed to release a videotape of Casey's reaction the day she learned a child's remains were found. The hearing date has not been set.

The Anthony family will also be in court soon to fight the release of Caylee's autopsy report.

Caylee Anthony: Newscasts salute toddler's impact in short life

Pipitone said that scientists believe decomposition in that trunk took place over two days.

"If Caylee died on this day one year ago, what happened two days later could be key to the case," Pipitone added. Under a timeline approach to the story, Pipitone said he would touch on what happened on June 18 in two days.

Local newscasts highlighted an interview that Brad Conway, attorney for George and Cindy Anthony, gave to ABC's "Good Morning America." Chris Cuomo asked if there could be any suspects other than Casey Anthony, who is charged with her daughter's murder.

Conway said he knew of no theory that puts Casey Anthony above suspicion. But Conway also said: "I think there's reason to believe other people were involved. The question is: What was their involvement? How deep was it?"

Some of Conway's most intriguing observations didn't make it to air but could be found at ABCNews.com.

True Crime book about Casey Anthony to be published
June 16, 2009 5:39 PM
<snipped>
Fanning says she knows the title upsets a few people.

"Caylee was mommy's little girl," she said. "Every little two year old girl is mommy's little girl. And that's what makes what happened so horrific."

Fanning says deep within the court documents and articles are the hidden gems that tell the true story.

"I didn't pay for any rights, the publishers didn't," she said. "In a lot of measure I am very much just like any other reporter covering this story. I just have more space."

Though the book will be released in November, Fanning plans to follow the trial and have an updated version in the future. She says she has drawn her own conclusions about the case. She'll share those thoughts in the book's afterward.

Somber anniversary for Anthonys
Updated: Wednesday, 17 Jun 2009, 1:11 AM EDT

<snipped>
One year ago, the two ate breakfast together. Around 1 p.m. on June 16, Caylee hugged George and kissed him goodbye as she walked out the door with her mom, Casey.

George Anthony never dreamed that it would be the last time he would ever see his granddaughter, or that a year later, people would be leaving stuffed animals, roses and toys at a makeshift memorial for the toddler.

Though the memorial was removed last month, as of 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, there were a half dozens stuffed animals and at least two signs. One read "Cindy don't touch," the other read, "and you too George."

But just half an hour later, the signs were gone and so were the stuffed animals. A one of George and Cindy’s neighbor put it, the public has had their time to mourn, now they want their neighborhood back.

Caylee Anthony was remembered in a memorial that was not attended by one single member of the Anthony family. A small group met Tuesday night at Blanchard Park to remember Caylee.

The memorial was organized by Richard Grund, the father of Casey's former fiancé who didn't attend the service.

However, his father did read a letter written by Jesse.

"I miss Caylee everyday. Neither tomorrow, nor the day after will change that," read Richard Grund.

At the end of the service, balloons with Caylee's name and butterflies were released.

Casey Anthony jail video will not be released
The video showed Casey Anthony's reaction after she learned a child's remains were found near her home.
11:55 AM EDT, June 17, 2009
<snipped>
Orange Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland ordered today that the video taken at the Orange County Jail on Dec. 11 be sealed.

"While the court is loathe to shield any public record, an argument can certainly be made that the contents of the video are highly inflammatory," Strickland wrote in his three-page order.

In making his decision, he watched the video and applied a legal three-part test, which included whether the video could impact a potential jury pool.

"Given the nature and scope of the pretrial publicity, it is not unreasonable to assume that many persons in the potential jury pool might view this video and develop a 'hardened' attitude in reference to the defendant's guilt," he wrote.

UPDATED: Judge Seals Jailhouse Video Of Casey Anthony

<snipped>
"While the Court is loathe to shield any public record, an argument can certainly be made that the contents of the video are highly inflammatory," Judge Stan Strickland wrote in his order. "Considering the matter and penalty at hand, it does not seem too great a restraint to limit access to the video in question. Therefore, the defendant's Motion to Seal the videotape is granted, and it must not be released for viewing by the general public or media, until further order of the court."

However, the Orlando Sentinel had filed a motion to intervene, which Judge Strickland granted Wednesday.

Rachel Fugate, the attorney for the Orlando Sentinel -- which had filed the aforementioned motion to unseal the video -- said Judge Strickland was prudent in his ruling.

"We certainly wish the videotape would have been released, but we certainly appreciate the consideration the judge gave to this matter," said Fugate. "We don't have any reason to believe there was something wrong in his ruling."

Sheaffer said the ruling does not mean the video can't be used as evidence in the trial. That decision will come later. The judge did point out that sealing the video could be just a delay and that at some point after the trial is over the video might be released.

Anthony Reaction Video To Stay Sealed

The public will not see a video that shows Casey Anthony's reactions the day she learned her daughter's remains were found near her home.

Judge Stan Strickland ruled Wednesday to seal the video taken at the Orange County Jail on Dec. 11. He worried the video, if released, could taint potential jurors. Defense attorneys have asked the trial be moved to South Florida because of the intense media coverage in Orlando.

Defense attorneys have asked the trial be moved to South Florida because of the intense media coverage in Orlando. A hearing has not been scheduled yet to determine whether the case will be moved out of central Florida.

Judge Seals Casey Anthony Jail Video
Court: Video Of Anthony From Day Remains Found 'Highly Inflamatory'
POSTED: 1:39 pm EDT June 17, 2009

"Given the nature and scope of pretrial publicity, it is not unreasonable to assume that many persons in the potential jury pool might view this video and develop a 'hardened' attitude in reference to the defendant's guilt," the order read.

The order went on to say that only a change of venue could conceivably protect Anthony's right to a fair trial if the video were to be released. Anthony's attorneys have filed a motion for a change of venue, but it has not been heard.

Last week, the state released about 1,000 pages in depositions and other evidence in its case against Anthony. However, George and Cindy Anthony succeeded on in the effort to at least temporarily block the release of granddaughter Caylee Anthony's autopsy report.

Strickland is expected to hold a hearing on the matter sometime this week.

Casey Anthony: Jail videotape 'so damaging,' judge rules
posted by halboedeker on Jun 17, 2009 5:21:45 PM
<snipped>
For now, the public won't see it, Judge Stan Strickland decided today.

"People who've seen it, though, tell WESH 2 that Casey doubles over repeatedly while watching television news coverage of a child's remains being found near her home," WESH-Channel 2 anchor Martha Sugalski said. The remains were later identified as 2-year-old Caylee Anthony, and Casey Anthony is charged with her daughter's murder.

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said Anthony's right to a fair trial outweighed the public's right to see the video. "The court is very concerned that she may, in fact, not get that fair trial," he said. "It would also be damning to the defense and their efforts to seat a fair and impartial jury if, in fact, this was released."

A decision on whether the tape will be used in the trial will come later, WFTV's Deal reported, drawing on Sheaffer's expertise. Strickland also said the tape might be released after the trial, Deal added.

A former Orange County Jail inmate says she witnessed guards physically restrain accused killer Casey Anthony. Just moments after Anthony learned that the state was seeking the death penalty, the ex-inmate says Casey went berserk and had to be strapped to a bed.

The story grabbed national headlines. Until tonight, the Seminole County woman ducked all local media. FOX 35 investigator is the first local reporter to sit down with Anthony’s ex-jail mate and challenge the ex-con's claims, in a story you'll see only on FOX.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - In an exclusive interview with RadarOnline.com, a former Orange County Jail inmate tells the website that Casey Anthony flipped out the day she found out prosecutors wanted to go after the death penalty in her criminal case, adding that prison officials had to restrain her.

The inmate said in the online report, "She had tears in her eyes. She was screaming, 'I am pissed! I am pissed!' She looked into my room and said help me."

Teri Thomas spent time in the jail under the name Teri Narsesian for a violation of probation on a bad check conviction.

UPDATED: Hearing Scheduled On Release Of Caylee Autopsy Results
Posted: 11:26 am EDT June 18, 2009
Updated: 7:04 pm EDT June 18, 2009
<snipped>
A hearing is scheduled Friday at 11:00am in the case against Casey, on the release of Caylee Anthony's autopsy results. Casey Anthony is not expected to attend the hearing.

"Every time there's a motion filed to block the release of something what do you assume? You assume that there must be something inflammatory and damning," said WFTV Legal Analyst Bill Sheaffer.

Sheaffer says Caylee's grandparents have no legal standing in the case to ask the judge to seal a public record and says there is no legal basis for their argument.

"Unless there's a legal basis other than emotional distress, which is not a legal basis, this judge will not block the release of this public document," Sheaffer explained.

The hearing may last fifteen minutes and the judge said he is not inclined to seal public records.

Hearing to determine release of autopsy report in Casey Anthony case
Casey Anthony's parents don't want the public record released to the media.
11:06 AM EDT, June 18, 2009
<snipped>
Anthony's parents, George and Cindy Anthony, don't want the report, which is public record, released to the media. In a request to the judge, Anthony's attorney, Brad Conway, wrote that the release would "cause great anguish to the Anthony family" as they continue to struggle with the loss of their only granddaughter.

The Anthony family don't want to have to endure "endless comment and speculation in the media and public forums" about how their Caylee died.

The Orlando Sentinel is requesting the report and plan to have an attorney at the hearing.

Casey Anthony will not be there.

But Al Tompkins, an instructor at the Poynter Institute, said the Anthony's argument that the release of information would make them uncomfortable does not justify cutting off the free flow of information in Florida otherwise known as the public's right to know.

The Poynter Institute is a non-profit think tank for professional journalists.

"We have a very open system and have worked really hard to keep it that way," Tompkins said. "Those in the media are going to have to show some restraint or we put a big target on us."

Without restraint, Tompkins said it will get easier and easier for judge's to justify withholding information.

Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland is scheduled to hear the motion at 11 a.m. Friday in the Orange County Courthouse. He has issued a temporary stay of the autopsy report's release until that hearing.

Neighbor: Casey Borrowed Shovel
POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009
UPDATED: 6:43 pm EDT June 18, 2009
<snipped>
Anthony's travels on June 18, 2008, put her near the area where Caylee's body was found six months later, Local 6 reporter Tony Pipitone said. Caylee was 2 when she was last seen alive on June 16, 2008.

The same day last summer, neighbor Brian Burner said Anthony asked to borrow a shovel.

"Casey had approached me and said that she couldn't find the key to their shed and wanted to know if she – if I had a shovel she could borrow to dig up a bamboo root that she's been tripping over," Burner told investigators in an interview last July.

Burner said he gave Anthony the shovel and her demeanor appeared normal, but the fact that she had backed her car up to the family garage was unusual.

Cell phone records show Anthony was near the area where Caylee's body was dumped around 4 p.m.

After testing samples from the trunk of Anthony's car, scientists said that a decomposing body may have been lying in the trunk for around two days.

Girl's Grandparents Filed Motion To Seal Report
POSTED: Thursday, June 18, 2009
UPDATED: 1:14 pm EDT June 19, 2009

The attorney representing Caylee's grandparents filed a motion to block the release of the autopsy results, but it was denied. The results could be released as early as today.

"I think it is information that the public has the right to see. I'm going to deny your motion to restrict disclosure," Judge Stan Strickland said. "I'm not happy to make the ruling. It is something I legally have to do."

In court Friday morning, a visibly emotional George Anthony asked Strickland to delay the release of the autopsy results until Casey Anthony's criminal trial.

Fugate questioned George Anthony about his participation in the vast media coverage given to the case.

"They have participated, voluntarily, in this public comment and I don’t think delaying the release of the autopsy reports is going to alleviate their grief or protect their privacy," Fugate said.

A judge has denied Caylee Anthony’s grandparents motion to release the autopsy report of their granddaughter

Casey Anthony's parents were in court Friday morning to fight the public release of their granddaughter's autopsy report.

George Anthony testified before Judge Stan Strickland Friday. In a tearful plea, Anthony asked that the autopsy be sealed.

"Although the public has the right to know, we as family are asking the court to hold off until it becomes necessary at time of our daughter's trial,” George Anthony said. "We believe that allowing the medical to be released will allow others to dissect, misinterpret and sensationalize the information that will ultimately tarnish Caylee's memory and cause severe harm to our family."

UPDATED: Judge denies sealing autopsy report on Caylee Marie
Public has a right to view the contents of the report, Strickland said.

Strickland said he "was not happy" about his decision, but he had no choice.

"It is just findings and medical examiner's reports. No photos," Strickland said. "Information is just factual. No editorializing. It's quite dry, other than the terrible content."

The public "has a right to view the same items I look at," Strickland added. The judge said the autopsy can be released as early as today.

George Anthony, who was visibly emotional during the hearing, stormed out of the courtroom after Strickland made his ruling.
