ABC News Under Fire For Payment To Murder Suspect

ABC News is facing sharp criticism over the disclosure that it paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to a Florida woman who now stands accused of killing her own daughter. The $200,000 payment in August 2008 to Casey Anthony was used for exclusive rights to reproduce family photographs and videotape of her then-missing 2-year-old, Caylee.

The pictures and footage were used on Sept. 5, 2008, as the heart of a story on ABC's Good Morning America and a full-hour treatment later that night on the prime-time newsmagazine 20/20. Casey Anthony was charged with child neglect and endangerment that day. The next month, she was indicted by a grand jury on charges of murder.

'Unethical'
Reaction in journalism circles Friday was swift and unforgiving. "I regard it as a totally unethical journalistic practice to pay people for access that way," former NBC News President Lawrence K. Grossman said.

ABC News declined repeated requests for interviews. But the network released a two-sentence statement confirming it had paid Anthony for exclusive access to the family's home videos and photographs. ABC noted it received no interview with her.

Lack Of Disclosure
In September 2008, ABC had its chance to be transparent when anchor Chris Cuomo spoke to Elizabeth Vargas on Good Morning America during a story on Caylee and her mother's questionable behavior:

Cuomo: Who bailed her out this time?

Vargas: We're told it's a production company out in Tennessee, perhaps, that might have been interested in buying the rights to her story, her personal story. This is not an inconsiderable amount of money: half a million dollars bail each time.

But Vargas never told her viewers that only days earlier ABC had done pretty much the same thing.

This Made Me Laugh, Oh the Irony!

And is it not just so ironic that the upcoming indigence hearing would ultimately reveal ABC (or as Jose Baez likes to mumble, the American Broadcasting Company) paid an accused child killer&#8217;s defense team $200,000.00 for photos and video of the child the defendant was accused of murdering.

Yet, the local ABC affiliate, WFTV, instead releases a series of &#8220;Jaw Dropping&#8221; reports that captures the public&#8217;s attention and completely divert the media focus from that same indigence hearing (i.e. The Real Story).

And to top it off, that same ABC affiliate pushed the &#8220;jaw dropping&#8221; mistress story right until the very last desperate minute by tantalizing the public with the prospect that one of those reports would be &#8220;of the other shoe dropping&#8230;&#8221; (Spoiler Alert: It never did.)

Isn&#8217;t that the truth! And that, Ladies and Gentleman, is coming from the same legal commentator who works for local ABC affiliate WFTV; and for whom ABC News &#8220;licensed exclusive rights to an extensive library of photos and home videos for use by our broadcast platforms, affiliates and international partners.&#8221; Orlando Sentinel (March 18): Casey Anthony: ABC News says it licensed &#8216;library of photos&#8217; through attorney
ROFL! And I thought Jose Baez had a conflict of interest brokering the deal in the first place (Casey, ABC has offered to pay $200K, but only if you keep me as an attorney and I get most of the money &#8211; please sign here)!

If you can&#8217;t trust your own local news stations to give it to you straight &#8211; who can you trust?

State will help pay Casey Anthony's defense, judge orders

"All costs submitted shall be in compliance with the Ninth Judicial Circuit's caps and rates and are subject to further review," Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland said in a order issued Friday.

In Friday's order, Strickland granted Anthony's request to be declared indigent, which means the state will pay expenses related to her defense on a discretionary basis except for private attorney's fees.

A spokeswoman for the DePaul Center for Justice in Capital Cases praised the ruling.

"The defense is pleased that this ruling came after an analysis of supplementary documents detailing the defense's income and expenditures, which were deemed by the court to meet the legal standards for the determination of indigency for costs," Liz Brown said.

"After consistent misinformation from legal analysts, bloggers, and commentators, the defense hopes this ruling ends inappropriate speculation regarding any misuse of funds and looks forward to Miss Anthony's day in court."

They certainly looked at her but she did not respond in kind. To me that says she is not longer bonded with them, the time and distance between them has left its mark.

The lawyer representing a Kissimmee woman in her defamation suit against Casey Anthony lists about 150 potential witnesses in her case.

Among the witnesses: Casey Anthony, her friends, her parents George Anthony and Cindy Anthony, and defense attorney Jose Baez.

Attorney John Morgan filed the witness list Friday in Orange County Circuit Court.

Also among the potential witnesses: Private investigators Dominic Casey and Jim Hoover; California bounty hunter Leonard Padilla, who helped post Casey Anthony's bond; FBI agents; FDLE agents and detectives from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Morgan could call Anthony's ex-boyfriends as witnesses &#8212; including Jesse Grund, Ricardo Morales and Anthony Lazzaro, according to his list.

More discovery evidence is expected to be released Tuesday in the case against Casey Anthony.

The documents include an interview with a woman who has a troubled past. The woman claimed she searched the area where Caylee Anthony&#8217;s remains were eventually found on December 11, but didn't find anything.

WFTV is also expecting interviews with Texas EquuSearch volunteers to be included.

More evidence in the criminal case against Casey Anthony is expected to be released on Tuesday and there are also new developments in the civil case against her.

Some are calling the list a preview to the criminal trial, as these are many of the same people who will be on witness list when Casey faces the death penalty. "You will see to some degree in the civil case what we can anticipate in the criminal case, but it's not all encompassing, because there is a different issue obviously in the civil case than the criminal case," said WFTV Legal Analyst Bill Sheaffer.

The new witness list for the civil case includes more than 100 additions, along with Casey, her family and even her attorney.

According to Scheaffer, the civil case could give lawyers on both sides some ammunition in the criminal case. "If the witnesses from the civil case do in fact testify in the criminal trial then any statement they gave in the first instance could be used for impeachment if they make a different statement," said Sheaffer.

Marking an &#8216;X'
During an interview with Orange County investigators, Texas EquuSearch president Tim Miller said Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, became upset when he told her they were going to start a search for a body. Casey Anthony's father, George Anthony, sat down at the kitchen table with his daughter and pulled out a map. He asked Casey Anthony if she would help, Miller explained. "Casey, where do they need to start searching? Would you make us a spot on the map? Would you make an 'X,' would you make a spot on the map?" Miller recalled George Anthony asking his daughter. At that point Cindy Anthony got upset and kicked everyone out of the house, Miller said. Casey Anthony went back to her bedroom and did not mark the map.

Search volunteers questioned
Joseph Scott Jordan Sr., a dental radiologist from Sanford, led a team of volunteers Sept. 1, 2008, in a search for the child. They covered a narrow band of land not far from where the body would be found three months later, but Jordan told deputies in a sworn statement Nov. 5 that because of knee-deep water, his team came no closer than 40 to 50 feet from that spot.

Seminole County woman questioned for her role in Casey Anthony case
Joy Wray, 30, has been the topic of many blogs, YouTube videos and other Internet postings since Caylee was reported missing. Photos that Wray took during her search for Caylee were discussed with Orange County detectives. On Nov. 22, Wray took her computer to the Best Buy in Altamonte Springs and was overheard telling people she wanted photographs to be removed from the computer so police couldn't find them. Best Buy management reported the suspicious behavior.

Wray told Seminole County deputies in April that she was a private investigator for the "Caylee Anthony case." She was disoriented and disheveled, the report said. Wray also said California bounty hunter Leonard Padilla, who helped post Casey Anthony's bond, had threatened to kill her and her children "if she testified." Wray said she was a spy for "President Bush."

Among the other details that emerged about Wray in the documents released Tuesday:
-- Wray identified herself as a spy and said she's taken photos by hanging in trees.
-- She's been hospitalized by police for mental evaluation.
-- Wray said Casey Anthony's father, George Anthony, brainwashed her.
-- Wray is writing a book and she wanted the photographs in question to be copyrighted.
-- She knows former Pres. George Bush and Sen. Bill Nelson.
-- She was raped by three guards while in jail.
-- She fears a potential killer is following her.
-- Wray admitted to creating an online video depicting defense attorney Jose Baez as a vampire, Casey Anthony as a mad scientist, her brother Lee Anthony and Frankenstein and George Anthony as a werewolf.

Who is Joy Wray?
Seminole County deputies have had plenty of interaction with Wray. She's in the agency's reporting system &#8212; which could mean she was a victim, reportee or suspect &#8212; more than two dozen times, the Sheriff's Office told the Orlando Sentinel. In December 2008, Joy Wray's husband, John Wray, told deputies his wife was "obsessed" with the Anthony case and refused to take her medication. Wray was hospitalized by police for mental evaluation as recently as February, Seminole County sheriff's report show.

The release includes hundreds of pages of transcripts of interviews with Texas EquuSearch volunteers who searched the wooded area near where Caylee Anthony's remains were later found. The defense has argued that the area where meter reader Roy Kronk found Caylee's remains in December 2008 had previously been searched and no body was found, but interviews with search volunteers reveal that although search teams came close to the area, the spot where the toddler's remains were found was under water during previous searches.

All the searchers interviewed said they never got more than a few feet into the woods where Caylee was later found. Caylee's body was found around 30 feet off the road.

Also included in the documents is evidence discrediting those who claimed the location had already been searched. The woman, who has been determined to be mentally ill, claimed to have photos showing there was no body in the woods. Investigators determined the photos are not of the same spot.

Tuesday's release also details a heated exchange between Casey Anthony and her father, George Anthony, during the time she was free on bond and Caylee was still missing. Miller said George Anthony tried to get his daughter to mark a map with an "X" depicting where they should begin their search for the toddler, but she refused and stormed off to her bedroom.

Miller said the behavior, "Made it pretty obvious that somebody probably knew something."

Nearly 1,000 pages of evidence were released in the case against Casey Anthony on Tuesday and it goes inside the Anthony family home right after Caylee disappeared. The documents provide new insight into the Anthony family and Casey's strange behavior during the search for her daughter.

The documents contain statements from the leader of Texas EquuSearch, Tim Miller. Miller told investigators Casey and her parents displayed strange behavior during the search for Caylee Anthony. They asked Miller to help find a live Caylee, but he said they turned on him and he wasn't even allowed to talk to Casey.

Miller told detectives that the Anthony family acted like no other family he's ever dealt with. Even though Cindy asked them to come and search, he said the Anthonys didn't offer to help in the searches, didn't support the effort by standing by at the tents during searches and said he wasn't allowed to talk to Casey, who was the last known person to see Caylee alive.

And there was the tough question George asked Casey just days after she had bonded out of jail.

Miller told detectives that George Anthony's friend, also a former law enforcement officer like George, told Miller that Casey held the answer to Caylee's whereabouts, but said Casey wouldn't talk. George's friend used a very unflattering word to describe Casey. &#8220;And he words were, &#8216;But the f****** b**** won&#8217;t talk,&#8217;&#8221; Miller told investigators during an interview on December 12, 2009.

Also among the newly-released documents are transcripts with Joy Wray, a woman who has a troubled past and who claimed she searched the area where Caylee Anthony&#8217;s remains were eventually found on December 11 but didn't find anything. Investigators' interviews with her are among the documents released Tuesday.

The nearly 1,000 pages of evidence included results for hair samples, photos from the wooded area where Caylee Anthony was found, e-mails and interview transcripts.

One e-mail sent to Texas EqquSearch leader Tim Miller was from a volunteer who encouraged investigators to take a closer look at the woods off Suburban Drive in east Orange County near the Anthony family home. (Read Davis' Statement)

Several interview transcripts, including interviews with Texas EquuSearch volunteers, were also included in the documents released.

One transcript between investigators and Miller found the Texas EquuSearch leader recalling being inside the Anthony family home with Casey Anthony, George Anthony and Cindy Anthony. Miller said he pulled out a map and George Anthony asked Casey Anthony to point to a location on the map where she thought volunteers should search for Caylee.

Miller said the question infuriated Cindy Anthony and she asked the EquuSearch volunteers to leave the home. Casey Anthony then went back to her bedroom.

New documents in the Casey Anthony case reveal more about what volunteers discovered when they looked for her daughter, Caylee. Volunteers say when they were in town the area where Caylee's remains were found was underwater. That backs up an investigation into the water depth of the wooded area.

Dr. James Jawitz was the scientist leading that investigation. More than $5,000 was paid to Dr. Jawitz for the study. Jawitz findings show the area was underwater when Texas EquuSearch was searching, but not when meter reader Roy Kronk found the remains in December 2008.

Will New Documents Help Defense Team?
Casey Anthony&#8217;s defense team is sure to capitalize on some conflicting statements made by some of the volunteers. Mark NeJame, the lawyer for Texas EquuSearch, handed over the list of volunteers to Casey Anthony's defense last year.

The name Joe Jordan has come front and center. Jordan was a search leader for Texas EquuSearch. He took a group right through the area that would become the crime scene. He first searched that general area on Sept. 1, 2008. That was three months before Caylee's remains were found. But two days after the remains were found on Dec. 13, he wrote an e-mail to Orange County Sheriff's Office Sgt. John Allen. "Although I know that many times an area is searched multiple times before a body is sometimes found, I believe the remains were moved there after our search," Jordan said.

Casey's attorneys filed a motion in November, saying they didn't believe Texas EquuSearch had turned over all the relevant documents, and therefore they believe they're entitled to everything. NeJame takes strong issue with that position, and plans to fight it in court.

NeJame told News 13 he is trying to get a hearing scheduled within the next few weeks on the Texas EquuSearch motion.
