A status hearing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Casey Anthony murder case. The defense and prosecution were expected to give a status update on their preparations for Anthony's murder trial, scheduled for May 9, 2011. Anthony did not attend the hearing.

4 p.m. update from FOX 35 reporter Holly Bristow:
During the hearing, Anthony attorney Cheney Mason offered a glimpse into one theory which they believe could save their client’s life and win her freedom. This comes after the defense questioned some Texas Equusearch volunteers under oath in depositions last week. “Public has been made to believe these people searched the exact area where the body was or tried to and couldn’t and that they didn’t try to and couldn’t, because it was impassable at the time.” “If we’re able to establish a reasonable doubt as to when it (the body) was put there and it comes at a time when Casey couldn’t have done it, then we know conclusively someone else had to do it,” Mason told us. “If we know somebody else put the body there, it’s a matter of who, how and when.”

Prosecutors and defense attorneys in the Casey Anthony murder case are back in court for a status hearing this afternoon, but Orange Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry said he won't entertain arguments about 911 calls until next month.

Perry told attorneys he'll schedule a July 15 hearing on the calls.

Judge Belvin Perry Jr. evidently isn’t paying attention to the heavy television coverage of the Casey Anthony case.

At a status hearing this afternoon, Perry acknowledged that didn’t catch Cindy Anthony’s interview on “Good Morning America” last week — and asked for an update. He added, “”The only thing I generally watch on television are movies when I watch TV.”

Orange County Chief Judge Belvin Perry scheduled a hearing for July 15 to discuss the use of 911 calls as evidence in the case against Casey Anthony.

Anthony's defense team does not want the 911 calls admitted as evidence, but the prosecution wants to use them. Legal experts said 911 tapes are usually considered hearsay, but there have been exceptions when the words are considered spontaneous.

Defense attorneys said Cindy Anthony's call was not spontaneous because she ran errands and talked to people before making the call. "It's not admissible evidence. Anyone can pick up a phone and say anything," defense attorney Cheney Mason said.

Foghorn leghorn sure is getting his beard in a tizzy about the State’s Motion to Admit Cindy Anthony’s 911 Calls.

And while I don’t fault the defense for trying to exclude the 911 tapes, their lack of foresight just highlights the Casey Anthony defense team’s continuing weakness – too much energy focused on losing battles (but then again, with five pro-bono attorneys, a legal clinic, and endless time on their hands, what’s a little wasted energy.)

But more importantly, they just don’t seem to understand the true evidentiary value the 911 calls provide to the State and the legal foundation that justifies their admission. Instead they rest their entire evidentiary objection to the admission of the 911 calls on “hearsay.” An unimaginative and shallow objection under the procedural nature and facts of this case.

Judge Wants Casey Anthony Trial Ready For May

In a 30-minute hearing, the judge asked questions to both prosecutors and the defense to make sure they were getting the work done in order to be ready for trial.

Anthony was not in court Monday. She was not required to be there since it was just a status hearing, where no major decisions were made. Anthony’s main attorney, Jose Baez, was not in court either. He's out of town.

Perry is holding attorneys to deadlines, and even asking them to do more to make sure there aren't any unexpected delays, like making sure investigators have turned over any and all material regarding Anthony's case.

"I would hate to have a key piece of evidence of some document that either favors the defendant or the state come up at the last minute, and they have to exclude it or may cause a delay in this case," Perry said.

Casey Anthony: Defense attorney calls Cindy’s 911 call ‘contrived and planned’

“Cause it’s not admissible evidence,” defense attorney Cheney Mason told WESH-Channel 2’s Michelle Meredith. “Anybody can pick up a phone and say anything. I could borrow your phone right now and call 911 about you.”

Mason jolted the case with his comments today. He told reporters that Cindy Anthony hadn’t told her co-workers about her concerns there was a dead body in Casey’s car. Cindy Anthony told “Good Morning America” last week that she exaggerated in a 911 call to get the attention of police.

Belich said the defense “completely reversed itself” on whether Texas EquuSearch volunteers in summer 2008 searched the woods where Caylee’s remains were found in December of that year. The defense is “now agreeing with investigators that the area was not searched because it was underwater,” Belich said. Still, the defense is challenging prosecution experts’ contention that Casey Anthony put Caylee’s body in the woods in June 2008, Belich explained. “What do you have that shows she was not there in June? That’s when Caylee disappeared,” Belich asked Mason. “We don’t know when she disappeared,” Mason said.

WESH also provided an update about Casey Anthony’s tooth after she fell at the courthouse. WESH’s Meredith said, “Sources us tell us that that tooth has been repaired and that it looks good, like it never happened.”

Casey Anthony prosecutors announce 2 new witness depositions

One witness scheduled to be questioned is Laura Buchanan, a New Jersey woman who has said that on Sept. 3, 2008, she searched "near the privacy fence and worked my way towards and then beyond the spot where the body was found," according to a sworn statement.

Establishing doubt about when the body was placed in the area is a critical part of Casey Anthony's defense. Buchanan is scheduled to be questioned under oath Aug. 16 at the office of her attorney in Iselin, N.J.

The second person to be questioned is Bradley Wright, a defense witness. His deposition is scheduled for July 21 at a law office in Sarasota, according to the notice filed by Assistant State Attorney Linda Drane Burdick.

Also appearing in the court file today is an order from Orange-Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry "memorializing" a status hearing held in his courtroom Monday. In the order, Perry notes no problems were reported regarding witness depositions and that the defense has scheduled depositions in mid-July with witnesses from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Knoxville, Tenn.

The former roommate of Roy Kronk and a Texas EquuSearch volunteer are scheduled to meet with attorneys in the case against Casey Anthony.

Anthony's defense has filed court papers indicating just as much evidence exists against Kronk as Casey.

The State Attorney's Office has set up the depositions for July and August.

Also, defense attorneys have received more than 5,000 pages of additional documents from the state known as "discovery."

The first letter, written by a woman named Julie, tells Anthony that she supports her 100 percent and is her "No. 1 fan." The letter talks about Casey's hair and how long it is getting, and Julie says she wants to send Casey money and other things she may need. Julie says she has spoken to George Anthony, Casey's father, about getting the items to her. The letter closes with a bubble that reads, "When I have bad day, I see you smile, and it changes everything."

While several of the letters show support for the young mot
her, one man's letter is quite the opposite.

The letter warns Casey of inconsistencies in her story regarding what happened to her daughter, Caylee, and the man writes, "You forgot to put the pool ladder back. It's pretty obvious you killed little Caylee around 4 p.m. on June 16."

Friday's document release not only contained letters of support and disapproval, but evidence that the investigation into Caylee's death is still very active two years later.

A single page from a company called Formed Fiber addressed to the assistant state attorney states that chloroform is not used in the manufacturing of the trunk liner used in Casey's car, a Pontiac Sunfire. Chloroform is a chemical that was used years ago to sedate patients before surgery. Traces of the substance were found in the trunk of Casey's car and the investigation began in Sept. 2008. At that time, a chemist told WESH 2 that it is a fairly-hazardous material not readily available to consumers. Sources at the time confirmed that the level of chloroform in her car was "suspiciously high," and that her computer confiscated within hours of her July arrest, show visits to websites with information on chloroform.

Over 5,000 pages of documents were released Friday morning in the case against Casey Anthony. Among them are four transcripts from interviews in 2008 and hundreds of letters sent to Casey in jail.

Among the letters are correspondence from George Anthony to his daughter, other letters from friends and family, and lots of fan mail. Letters of love, lust, support, suggestions and criticism sent to jailed Casey Anthony made up a majority of the 5,365 pages of documents. People from all over the country, including inmates around the nation, wrote to Anthony.

Meanwhile, the defense has scheduled depositions for two new witnesses. A woman who helped search near the area where Caylee Anthony’s remains were found will be deposed in August.

In July, a second witness will give his deposition and Casey's lawyers also plan to question experts at the Oakridge National Lab in Tennessee.

State to release more Casey Anthony letters on Friday

Prosecutors say they plan to release some 5,000 pages of discovery documents in the Casey Anthony case on Friday.

These documents include many letters addressed to Anthony herself, according to Danielle Tavernier, spokeswoman for Orange-Osceola State Attorney Lawson Lamar.

"I think most are letters addressed to the defendant, but since there are 5,000 pages, I can't say I read them all," Tavernier said in an e-mail. "I saw a statement mixed in there too."

Noon Update:
Right now I've got two people helping me pour through 5,000 pages of discovery just released from the State Attorney's Office. This is all stuff that could be used as evidence in the capital murder case against Casey Anthony. So far we've seen dozen's of letters from Casey's dad George. He says how much he loves her misses her and wants to hug her. he even notes that she's gaining weight. Casey has also gotten letters from folks across the country. Some telling her she's awful, others sending her prayers, support and even pictures.

Prosecutors released some 5,000 pages of evidence in the Casey Anthony case today, including letters she received at the Orange County Jail.

Casey Anthony's fans sent her marriage proposals, Biblical quotes, invitations to Nashville — even an advertisement for a weight-loss supplement — while she has been in the Orange County Jail facing a first-degree murder charge in her daughter's death.

The odd collection of letters and cards from people across the country — which includes correspondence from Anthony haters — are among the roughly 5,000 pages of evidence the Orange-Osceola State Attorney Office released today.

It marks the largest collection of jail letters to Anthony ever made public since Anthony was arrested and jailed almost two years ago.

Allen Moore of the Orange County Jail said mailroom staff open all mail and inspect it for contraband or possibly criminal information. He would not say if Anthony ever read or responded to the correspondence, stating that the case is under investigation and he could not provide a comment.
