Cindy Cries During Testimony On Caylee, Casey Anthony Angered
Trial to resume on May 31, 2011 at 8:30am

ORLANDO, Fla. --Casey walked into the courtroom smiling on Saturday.
Cindy Anthony was brought to tears as she described Caylee's baby blanket and bed to prosecutor Drane-Burdick.

Casey sat stone-faced as her mother cried and at one point shook her head "no."

Judge Perry called for a short recess, as Cindy walked out of the courtroom, Casey became angry and began crying.

Cindy also recounted lies that Casey was feeding her after Caylee was last seen alive.

State attorneys must decide how to proceed after getting rebuffed late Friday in an attempt to introduce instant messages between Casey and ex-boyfriend Tony Lazzaro, which they say go to her motive.

Tony Lazzaro testified Saturday that Casey sent a text message reading, "If they don't find her, guess who gets blamed and spends eternity in jail."

Prosecutor Drane-Burdick focused her questioning on June 15, 2008, the last day Cindy saw Caylee alive. Cindy talked about swimming in their pool that afternoon, describing in detail the exterior ladder they used to climb in, which she said they always detached once Caylee became a toddler. She specifically recalled taking the removable part of the ladder off the pool when they got out that afternoon, something that defense attorney Jose Baez had suggested in his opening statement she may not have done.


Cind believed Casey was working. Cindy also said Casey met Zanny through co-worker Jeff Hopkins and that she first heard about her as a possible babysitter for Caylee in Spring 2006, though she never met or saw a photo of her.




She then talked about the 31 days after June 16, 2008 when she did not see Casey or Caylee, reflecting a timeline of lies and excuses that prosecutor Burdick had told the jury of in her opening statement. She said she talked to Casey every day but there was always some reason why Caylee could not come to the phone, like she was sleeping or she was out with Zanny.

Saturday ended with Cindy’s testimony about the events around the week of July 4, 2008, when she was off from work and expected to watch Caylee, but Casey never let her.


Cindy testified that on July 3 she drove to Universal to confront Casey about money issues and found out Casey was not there. When she called Casey that day, she said she was in Jacksonville trying to rekindle her relationship with Jeff Hopkins.

Did Jose Baez's opening statement in the Casey Anthony case seem aimed at people who believe in conspiracy theories?

Nancy Grace: “Casey Anthony had stuck with a straight accident defense, saying that she was negligent and the child drowned and then she panicked, didn’t want to tell her mother and hid the crime to make it look like a murder, she would have fared better”.

Former prosecutor Susan Filan said the defense had gone “in a very difficult direction” with this “all-or-nothing strategy” that you either have to believe everybody else or Casey Anthony.

Joey Jackson says, “The problem is that Baez opened the door. He asked questions about the mother’s good character and whether she was a good mother.”

Jackson noted that when Baez moved for mistrial, Judge Perry reminded Baez: You asked about Anthony’s mothering.

"When you come forward with something so strong, you take on an obligation to prove it," Lurvey said. "If you don't (prove it), you're really done. He's created a competing theory."

In order to prove Caylee drowned and Casey was a victim of molestation, "She is absolutely going to have to take the witness stand and talk about it," Lurvey said. "Then she's going to have to submit to a brutal cross-examination."

As Constantine is shown video of Casey's reaction to her mother, she said Casey shows expressions of anger, sadness, grief and surprise. She said Casey's reaction to her mother's lack of eye contact was genuine.

"There are multiple types of emotions going through her right now," Constantine said. "She is probably feeling betrayed."

"They're on opposite ends of the world or they're not in agreement with one another," Constantine said. "When people avoid someone or avoid eye contact, there's a reason. Somehow maybe the relationship is breaking apart or emotionally they're at odds."

Linda Drane-Burdick stood up and told Judge Perry that Baez had just opened the door for the state to bring in Casey's criminal record for check fraud, for which she had pleaded guilty.

"Once he places the credibility of his client before the jury in the form of an out of court statement he opens the door to have that testimony impeached with her prior felony convictions," said Drane-Burdick.

"I think we have an issue where we believe we would have some argument," Baez stated.

"I will let this go into evidence if you don't persuade me otherwise," Perry said.

Prosecutors apparently switched their witness lineup in order to bring in Casey's former best friend, Amy Huizenga, who was the victim of Casey's check fraud convictions.

The defense tried to get Judge Perry to delay Huizenga taking the stand. Baez said he didn't expect her to testify on Tuesday and didn't have a file he needed.

Perry allowed Baez more time before he cross examines Huizenga, but said Baez needed to have all his files with him.

"If you want files, you better put them in there. I am not stopping anymore for you to get a file," said Perry.

Perry threatened to force lawyers to hold a full day of court on Saturday instead of a half day if Huizenga didn't take the stand on Tuesday.

CNN) -- The murder trial continues June 1, 2011, a day after a Amy Huizenga testified that Casey was growing more frustrated with her parents around the time her 2-yr-old daughter Caylee disappeared.
Amy told jurors that the two were previously close friends and that Anthony complained frequently about her parents, particularly her mother.

Anthony's relationship with her mother was "strained. It was hard. Her mom was continually agitated with her," Huizenga said. "I remember she told me her mom had told her she was an unfit mother. She was extremely upset about that."

Cindy Anthony takes keeled over in tears took the stand as her emotional 911calls were played. Judge Perry becames irritated with the defense.


Imaginary Friends
In cross-examination, defense attorney Baez tried to paint Cindy as a mother who was trying to profit off of her granddaughter’s disappearance.

Cindy said she only took tried to make money off of some things, like photos, in order to pay attorney bills. She also said she is only seeking to trademark Caylee’s name to prevent any misuse by entrepreneurs.

Baez questioned Cindy about a complex network of imaginary friends of Casey’s.

Casey once told her about a Jeff Hopkins, whom Casey said also worked at Universal Studios.

Cindy said it never occurred to her that Hopkins wasn’t a real person. Another person named was an alledged Juliette Lewis.


Casey’s Criminal History
Prosecutors said they hope to tell the jury about Casey’s six prior felony convictions.

Casey’s defense doesn’t want the jury to hear about her past, but prosecutors claim the defense opened itself up to the issue.

Perry will take up the matter at a 8:30 a.m. hearing Wednesday.

Defense Asks Cindy Anthony About Tot Mom's "Imaginary Friends"

During her cross examination Tuesday, defense attorney Jose Baez asked Cindy Anthony about her daughter Casey's "imaginary friends"–as he called them–including the supposed father of her daughter Caylee and the babysitter who she frequently claimed was watching her for two years.

First, though, as he has with most of the witnesses so far, Baez asked her what kind of mother Casey Anthony was. Cindy said Casey was very loving, with a quick maternal instinct that reminded her of herself. Caylee adored her mother, Cindy testified, and her eyes would light up when she saw her.

Sentence For Lesser Charge?
Sentencing for non-capital cases in Florida are subject to the Florida Punishment Code. This is a sentencing guidelines system that assigns points for the primary offense, any other offenses, prior record and death or injury to the victim, among other things. The final total of points establishes the presumptive sentence that should be imposed.
