Day 10: Death Band, Air Samples
FBI Expert Testifies On Hair Sample

POSTED: 12:31 pm EDT June 4, 2011
"Snip"

ORLANDO, Fla. -- FBI analyst Karen Lowe said hair analysis is not as precise as DNA analysis.

The hair had a dark band that Lowe testified has only been seen in hairs attached to the scalp of a decomposing body. She said tests have shown the band appears between two days and 15 days after death.

Post-mortem root banding has never been used as evidence in a Florida criminal trial until the Anthony case.

On a cable TV news show Padilla alleged the Anthonys made $200,000 when the money was actually received by their daughter and not them.

Expert: Hair In Anthony Trunk Like Dead Person's Hair
Anthony Could Face Death Penalty If Found Guilty

"Snip" UPDATED: 1:05 pm EDT June 4, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- FBI forensic expert Karen Lowe testified that a hair removed from the trunk of Casey's car is consistent with hair from a dead person.

Judge Perry declared Lowe as an expert in microscopic trace examination of hair.

"In any of the hairs that were exhibits, did you find hairs that showed decomposition?" prosecutor Jeff Ashton asked.

"Yes, one," Lowe said, referring to state exhibit Q12.

"What did you find upon examining it?" Ashton said.

"The hair was a Caucasion head hair that had cases of decomposition," Lowe responded, adding that it was 9 inches long and brown.

Lowe said the hair was similar to one pulled from Caylee's hair brush and was not similar to a hair sample from Casey Anthony.

Under cross-examination, Lowe said that she could not be 100 percent certain that the hair was from a dead person.

Michael Vincent, a crime scene investigator was also called on Sat.

Vincent later said processing Anthony's car was the first time that he had ever collected an air sample.

About 20 minutes after Saturday's proceedings began, a spectator in the courtroom was removed after he fell asleep.

Casey Anthony trial: Experts discuss collection, analysis of samples from Casey Anthony's car
Baez coaxed Lowe

"Snip"
By Bianca Prieto and Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

12:40 p.m. EDT, June 4, 2011
During cross-examination, Baez coaxed Lowe into acknowledging that there are limitations to microscopic hair analysis, basically that such analysis cannot be used to positively link an individual to a specific hair sample. DNA testing must be used to do that, she said.

She also said she requested additional hairs to help make the case stronger, but no additional hairs she tested showed the signs of apparent decomposition. While Lowe has seen the root banding many times in cases of known deceased individuals during her career, she said this is the first case in which she has testified about the root banding.

What to watch for during the trial

"Body Language 101" isn't just about watching a gesture and defining what it means.

Here's an interesting fact: We transmit 2,000 silent messages of communication every hour. Every single gesture is based on an emotion inside of us.

Look at facial expressions, voice, and tie that into the content

Casey Anthony Defense Faces Uphill Battle, Experts Say
Anthony Could Face Death Penalty If Convicted Of Murder

Kendall Coffey, a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida
said things don't appear to be going well for the defense.

"Snip" POSTED: Sunday, June 5, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Legal experts said prosecutors' meticulous murder case against Casey Anthony so far, along with the sensational claims that her father covered up her daughter's death after Caylee drowned, could make it difficult to avoid a conviction.

Even without a clear motive established for why Casey Anthony, might have killed her daughter, some court watchers said those defense arguments may be overshadowing any deficiencies in the prosecution's case.

"I believe they have almost relieved the state of their burden of proof by making such strong assertions in opening statements," said Karin Moore, a professor at Florida A&M University's College of Law. "They are going to have to prove it now. It is going to be a difficult task for them."

Casey Anthony trial: Legal experts question defense attorney Jose Baez's handling of case
"Snip" By Anthony Colarossi June 5, 2011

Defense attorney Jose Baez rocked the criminal-defense world — not to mention Orlando's legal community — when he told jurors in Casey Anthony's trial that the death of his client's daughter was not a murder but due to an accidental drowning.

He also blamed Anthony's lying on her family's deep dysfunction and the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father.

It was a spectacular way to start a trial. But since then, criminal-defense experts in Florida and the country have called Baez's opening statement in court a high-risk and dangerous move.

Casey Anthony: Disturbed females fascinate movie fans

“You’re dealing with a disturbed woman.”

That line from a favorite movie kept haunting me last week as TV commentators described Casey Anthony as disturbed, weird and eerie. Those descriptions were based on Anthony’s behavior in tapes of police interrogations and jailhouse conversations.

Let’s face it: American popular culture has been fascinated by disturbed females for a long time. The upside of art is that it can supply meaning to such bizarre behavior. Here’s a gallery of classic movie performances:

Exclusive: Can Oak Ridge science be trusted in Casey Anthony case?

"Snip"
By Adam Longo, Reporter
Last Updated: Monday, June 6, 2011
Originally published Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Oak Ridge scientists prepared a report for the Anthony case. They wrote:

A portion of the total odor signature identified in the Florida trunk vehicle is consistent with a decompositional event that could be of human origin.

Now, turn back the clock before any of us had heard about Anthony.

In early 2008, a cold case detective in California was working with his search dog, "Buster," at the last known hideout for the Manson family.

15 minutes into the search, Buster had an alert,” said Sgt. Paul Dostie, from Mammoth Lakes, California, Police Department.
Dostie took soil samples from five different sites and set them to the scientists at the Oak Ridge lab.

In the report, which we obtained exclusively, Dr. Arpad Vass, from Oak Ridge, writes:

We feel that sufficient evidence exists to warrant further investigation of several of these sites.

His conclusions of the five sites were that two were likely and two were possible clandestine grave sites.

"Normal procedure is to follow up the alert with other technologies like GPR, like magnetometers, like soil measurements," said Vass.
